HTC EVO Shift 4G to Succeed EVO 4G on Sprint

It looks like HTC already has a successor to the popular HTC EVO 4G on U.S. carrier Sprint. The Android 2.2 EVO 4G had launched as the first Android smartphone with support for 4G, utilizing Sprint’s WiMax network. When not in 4G coverage, the EVO 4G can fall back to Sprint’s 2G and 3G network support. The EVO 4G launched with a lot of attention given its support for a higher speed mobile broadband network, mobile hotspot capabilities, a kickstand for video viewing, front-camera for video conferencing, and the latest version of Android.

HTC had recently filed for a patent for the HTC EVO Shift 4G name through the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The device is classified as a “mobile phone.”

It’s unclear what form factor the EVO Shift 4G will utilize. HTC had used the Shift moniker before in its now cancelled Windows tablet product, which has a keyboard and a touchscreen, making it a convertible tablet running the full desktop Windows OS. That device also offered a unique feature in that it could also boot into Windows Mobile as well for an instant-on OS, for quick access to pertinent information like emails, weather, and notifications.

Sprint also has another 4G phone in its current lineup by the name of the Sprint Epic 4G, which is a Galaxy S smartphone by Samsung. That device has a 4-inch Super AMOLED display along with a landscape-oriented sliding keyboard to differentiate it from other Galaxy S variants.

In terms of smartphones with keyboards, Sprint is expected to carry the HTC 7 Pro, which is a Windows Phone 7 device with a sliding angled keyboard.

I’d bet on an EVO with a slideout keyboard of some sorts.
