AT&T Finally Gets Into MiFi Game with Novatel 2372

AT&T will soon be joining U.S. carriers Sprint and Verizon Wireless in offering a MiFi device, a mobile hotspot router that allows for up to five devices to share the same mobile broadband connection that was popularized by Novatel in the U.S. The Novatel MiFi 2372 is compatible with AT&T’s 3G network and will can fall back to EDGE speeds where 3G is not available; the device supports both HSUPA and HSDPA for fast uploads and downloads–upload speed is at 5.76 Mbps and download speed is up to 7.2 Mbps. To learn more about the MiFi specs, you can visit the Novatel datasheet for additional information. The device will be made available for $49.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate on contract from AT&T on November 21st. Contract data plans range from $35 for 200 MB to $60 for 5 GB monthly and contract-free data options top out at 1 GB.

When I had spoken to the folks at Novatel about a year ago, they had hinted that they were looking at AT&T as a launch partner for the GSM version of the company’s MiFi unit, but alluded to the fact that AT&T may want to strengthen its network. It looks like everything’s squared away and the AT&T MiFi 2372 will also come with GPS for location-based services, a slot for a micro SD card slot, and widgets support. According to Novatel, the maker of the MiFi, AT&T’s edition “will be the first in North America to support applications via the MiFi OS.”
