Dual-Core Motorola Olympus Smartphone Destined for AT&T in 2011

Recent speculation has it that the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2-powered Motorola Olympus, an Android smartphone, will be headed to AT&T in early 2011. The device is said be powered by NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 2 chipset and will run today’s current version of Android 2.2, albeit with a slightly updated revision at 2.2.1, which is also known as Froyo and will provide support for Adobe Flash content. Whether the phone will seem dated when it’s release isn’t clear as Google is set to release Android 2.3, called Gingerbread, in the near future. The Motorola Olumpus will also feature the MOTOBLUR user interface, which provides deep integration with social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter, along with widgets designed by Motorola to enhance the Android user experience.

The phone is rumored to be launch in the last week of January and will probably be AT&T’s most high-end Android device. The carrier’s Android lineup thus far has predominantly been in the mid-range tier, and perhaps the reason for not supporting better Android devices is to promote its exclusive relationship with Apple and the iPhone in the U.S. However, with its iPhone exclusivity set to expire soon, AT&T may be looking at alternatives to prevent subscriber loss when Verizon Wireless will also carry the iPhone on its network.

Thus far, it seems that the highest-end Android phone in AT&T’s lineup would be the Motorola Bravo, which was launched at CTIA a few months ago and is recently made available. The Olympus would replace the Bravo as the highest-end Android phone with the best specs on the carrier’s network.
