Notion Ink Ordering Process Raises Multiple Concerns

Published

Let’s just say you might want to hold off before ordering one of those Notion Ink Tablets that went up for pre-order yesterday. We’ve seen companies experience launch woes before, but Notion Ink is dealing with a number of issues, so much so that the company is suggesting holding off a bit, even if a bit defensively.

The ordering issues that are being reported include issues with credit card processing and rather large (and apparently changing) restocking fees. The web site had issues being up and down and there were reports that you couldn’t find key specs (like storage size) which is problematic. This comes after a long run up of successful teases on the web about what’s coming, but without anyone really getting their hands on the hardware to check it out. If nothing else that always raises skepticism. But the fact that Notion Ink itself won’t be releasing what it calls “in depth video” until December 18 boosts that to another level.

Here’s an excerpt from CrunchGear on its reporting:

Once the pre-ordering started those lucky enough to get an email allowing them early access and a January 9th shipping date discovered a bunch of surprises. The website was often down. The storage size of the tablets weren’t listed. The shipping charge was $50. The original contact phone number was 1-800-123-4567. The original terms and conditioned included a 25% restocking fee and made buyers pay for shipping back to India. The 25% restocking fee was later removed, but replaced with 5% cancellation fee that would apply even if a person canceled their order before the Adam shipped.

Tough to say what is really going on here, but like I said earlier Notion Ink is saying hold off for now. I’d recommend the same thing.

More reporting on this from SlashGear.

I still like everything I see on the Adam, but pre-ordering one without EVER seeing an independent review? Madness.

Unless, of course, you’re just loaded with disposable income and can risk eating the $400-$500 bucks.

I am VERY looking forward to sites like Gottabemobile getting their hands on preview device. Rohan tesed some sort of (possibly unique) digital inking solution, even though the tablet lacks a digitizer. Should be interesting to see.
