Dr. Tablet Still Using Tablet PCs

Published

on

I went to my doctor on Friday and as always we ended up talking about technology. Dr. John Selle is ahead of the curve when it comes to technology and has used Tablet PCs for a long time. He excitedly showed me that he’d upgraded to a Motion Computing J3500. He really likes having the touch display and dual battery packs.

So why is the doc running a Windows 7 tablet while the masses think that doing so is ludicrous in the age of iPads and Android tablets? The answer is simple. He relies on a single device whether at his desk, in an exam room or visiting patients in hospital rooms. He’s able to work on the same EMR software everywhere and he’s able to truly multitask. He also inks his charts rather than scribbling them onto paper to be transcribed later.

Unlike the iPad and other consumer slates, the Motion J3500 is ruggedized. Having a solid device that’s built to take on abuse is pretty important considering the information stored on it.

Dr. Selle was featured in a BNET video after they spotted my article about his high-tech practice. This video is a bit dated, but this is how a doctor’s office should look in 2010. I cringe when I see paper medical records strewn about other doctors’ offices.

It was nice to see Sumi again, I haven’t her since TechTV went off the air.

The masses are not doctors trying to work. The masses want to update their twitter and facebook and browse the web or play Angry Birds. It is sad that the tech community and commentators have all jumped on the dumb slate bandwagon and can’t wrap their heads around the fact that some people need to write stuff down and take notes and can’t type one handed. GBM, is not among that group, of course. If Apple released an Ipad tomorrow with an active digitizer most of those same commentators would hail it as a miracle invention and so obvious.

I agree with James above. The indutry that began providing tools to do work, has been derailed or re-routed by the profit motive to an industry that competes with TV and provides nothing more valuable than entertainment. Well last I checked no one pays anybody for playing Angry Birds and therein may be a key to our failing economic competitiveness.

Well that’s a full computer that can do everything. I’m glad to see a slate used for “work”. It’s really the software that’s not doing justice to a lot of these systems.

The iPad and a lot of the latest slate tablets seem to be focused more on “media consumption”. Win 7 slates can do the same as the iPad can… but it’s the software that is making the big difference.

I look at our clinics with doctors using old convertible tablets and wince. They are so thick and clunky. HP should have heavily marketed the Slate 500 to medical professionals and sold around a dillion of them.
