A Wish List for Mobile Geeks and Tableteers

Published

No, this list isn’t about gadgets and things. This wish list is about things I’d like to see happen in the mobile space. I’m an impatient an old and would rather see these things happen sooner rather than later. Here’s a link to last year’s wish list, and to the ones previous (here and here.)

  • Now that it looks like we’re finally getting the proper convergence of chip technology and battery life for yielding decent battery life for some (not all) mobile devices, can we start to see some more advances in the science of creating the batteries and push it further?
  • Can we also see those who continue to lie about battery life claims be brought to task for lying about it?
  • We’re going to see a lot of tablets and slates in 2011, many running Android. I know there is such a thing as value add and differentiation, but can we stop with the UI overlays?
  • Speaking of overlays, Microsoft please don’t come up with some sort of UI overlay on whatever you’re going to do with CE or Windows Tablets.
  • Now that we know Microsoft is going to most likely announce some sort of Tablet device built on some version of CE. This looks like it is going to possibly be the first real split between Microsoft and Intel. That’s a good thing. Now, can we see Microsoft finally get serous about what it developed with the original Tablet PC concept and include it on these CE based devices?
  • I hope the developers who are working on Digital Inking Apps for the iPad continue to push things as hard as they are currently doing. They’ve taken a no win situation for Inkers and turned it into something credible.
  • I’d love to see those same developers of Inking Apps expand their reach into the Android market, but I’m guessing that won’t happen until after Honeycomb.
  • Speaking of Honeycomb, sooner rather than later would be a good idea for its release.
  • If you’re going to announce a product that isn’t going to be ready for 6, 9 or later months away, don’t announce it.
  • If you’re going to announce a product and not let reviewers touch it when you announce it, don’t announce it until you can.
  • I’d like to see Rupert Murdoch and other big media players finally realize that they can’t force a square peg into a round hole and actually come up with a new business model.
  • I’d like to see Google actually prove they have some design sense.
  • I repeat this every year and will until we see some change. CEOs of gadget companies should be forced to unpack or unbox their products on video or when they announce the product.
  • I’d like to see the media companies that are holding up things like Google TV get over themselves and realize they are losing money as well.
  • I hope Netflix continues to upset everybody’s apple cart.
  • I want to see RIM, HP, Motorola, and just about any other Tablet maker succeed in 2011. It won’t happen for all of them and many of the “me-tooers” don’t deserve to succeed.
  • I’d like to see some sort of sea change that would make the carriers change their evil ways. I’m not counting on it, but with faux-4G around the corner and the pricing gremlins playing the games they are playing now, we all headed into a mess. Time to assign a contract to an individual and not a device.
  • Come on Apple, you bought Siri last year. Can’t you figure out voice on the iPhone? You’re losing to Google big time on this front.
  • Speaking of Apple and Google, even though everyone wants to see a horse race between the both of you, there’s plenty of market to go around. How about patching up that feud?
  • Netbooks. Seriously? Someone is still making them? Time to stop.
  • I’d like to see some other company tackle and attempt to change Apple’s dominance of the PR and product release calendar.
  • I’d like to see product updates (hardware and software) quit breaking things I like in the name of innovation and doing something new and different.
  • I’d like to see some Apps or software released that don’t feel like they need social integration.
  • And as always, whirled peas.

I’m sorry, Warner, but whirled peas will never happen. Time to let it go. :P
