Will HP Lay the Palm Brand to Rest with Future webOS Devices?

According to PhoneArena, HP may soon be laying the Palm brand to rest. The company is expected to debut the Palm Pre 2 on Verizon Wireless in the U.S., but that device may be discontinued after two months for HP-branded webOS 2.0 hardware. The blog, however, does caution that this information must be taken with a grain of salt.

While the Palm brand carries a lot of weight from the company’s PDA days, HP’s shift towards its own branding could be beneficial to the company’s other line of products. As smartphones usually are among the cheapest of a computer-maker’s portfolio, outside of inexpensive netbooks, a well designed, smartphone could stand as a halo product to entice customers to other computing products.

Additionally, an HP-branded webOS smartphone and tablet could help the company compete against other computer-makers in the mobility space. Rivals such as Dell, Asus, Lenovo, and MSI are all expected to come out with phones and tablets soon, and an HP-branded smartphone and tablet could help the company raise visibility in this segment, which is expected to continue to grow.

While HP had been a strong Microsoft licensee in the past with Windows Mobile, the company has recently stated that it will dedicate its resources in the mobile space in webOS sphere. The company also is foregoing Android for future products beyond its Zeen printer/tablet duo.
