Mac Users Can Join Verizon’s 4G LTE Party in February

After an update was released for Verizon’s LG VL600 4G LTE USB modem, which brought with it improved performance, the carrier told Phonescoop that support for Mac users is forthcoming.

Despite an aggressive roll-out to 38 metropolitan areas of its 4G LTE network and robust speeds, many users have complained that Verizon’s initial releases of the 2 offered USB modems lacked the proper Mac support. In addition to the modem made by LG, Verizon also offers a 4G Pantech-made modem; the latter modem has an unofficial Mac workaround for those under the OS X environment.

The carrier says that formal Mac support should come sometime in February.

For its 4G LTE network, Verizon Wireless is quoting download speeds of between 5 and 10 Mbps and upload speeds of between 2 Mbps and 5 Mbps. Fortunately, and unlike most theoretical quoted speeds by other carriers, Verizon Wireless was conservative in its figures and real world usage is faster, in my experience, on both the upload and download side. On the upload side, I’ve seen speeds topped at 19 Mbps in Silicon Valley, though real world performance is around 2-10 Mbps consistently. Download speeds are faster. I’ve seen top speeds approaching 40 Mbps, though I haven’t been able to replicate that performance after it had topped out; consistent speeds were usually between 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps on the download side.
