Motorola Xoom Super Bowl Ad: “Goodbye 1984”

Published

on

Motorola released a teaser for its Xoom tablet Super Bowl ad on YouTube today. This one-minute ad teaser is an attack on the iPad and Apple’s famous 1984 Superbowl ad.  The Motorola Xoom ad starts off with a shot of earth from space and a countdown from 2011 to 1984. Some text that reads “One way to work…It’s time for more choices,” flashes on the screen before a bunch of speeds and feeds are thrown up on the screen.

A full 58 seconds go by before the product is even mentioned…in small text in the corner of the closing slide.

The Xoom is one of the best tablets we saw at CES 2011, but this ad is pretty bad in my opinion. Instead of showing off their own tablet, or even mentioning that they’re advertising a tablet, Motorola is speaking geek. Few, if any, everyday consumers will understand what the heck Motorola is advertising and the commercial isn’t memorable enough. There’s also no call for action anywhere in the ad. The average consumer will probably simply ignore what they assume to be a PHONE ad.

Update:

Motorola just contacted us and said that the video is just a teaser and the actual ad will be premiering on Super Bowl Sunday. I really hope the company shows off the Xoom and promotes it more than Apple’s products.

Would loved to see more of the products themselves rather than gigantic text, but nevertheless, it’s a beautiful ad.

It’s most likely just a teaser – not the real superbowl ad.

In this case, not mentioning the product makes perfect sense!

Yeah it bored me, and I didn’t even get the 1984 reference without your help. I was thinking George Orwell.

i sense they are selling their brand and not a specific product. hence them stating it’s time for more choices. fastforward to 2011; its not 1984.

i don’t really like the add. it’s ugly. don’t like the colors. nothing really visually. who ever got paid big money is laughing all the way to the bank…after executing an extremely frustrating project i’m sure.

More freedom? Does that mean the Xoom will have an unlocked bootloader and we can install custom ROM’s?

Or maybe they mean more freedom for Verizon and their crapware.
