In what may be seen as a last ditch effort to keep the print publishing business alive, Microcosm Publishing, a bookseller in Portland, Oregon, is making a deal with Kindle owners. Owners of the Amazon e-reader can go to the company’s store to swap their Kindle for the equivalent in books with printed pages. While [...]

I’m very fortunate to live and work in San Francisco and make my way down to Silicon Valley once or twice a week. Geek friends and acquaintances from other locales often tell me that nobody else ‘gets’ why they’re so passionate about technology or what they do for work. That’s not really a problem here in [...]

Recent changes to Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G flagship Android smartphone television commercials observed by Beatweek suggests that the Now Network may be preparing itself for an iPhone launch in the future. The EVO 4G commercial was recently seen amended with the quote the EVO was a superior option to the iPhone 4 removed. Rival Verizon [...]

Verizon’s chief operating officer confirmed that the carrier will offer a $30 unlimited data plan for iPhone users, according to the WSJ Digits blog. The move is an attempt to woo AT&T iPhone users who are grandfathered into unlimited plans, which AT&T stopped offering last year with the introduction of the iPhone 4. Of course [...]

Are you ready for some foo… Oh wait, I was thinking of the National Football Conference. In this case, NFC refers to Near-Field Communication, a wireless technology already used on some countries to turn phones into digital wallets. Google’s pushing it in Android with the Nexus S. Now word from Bloomberg is Apple is doing [...]

Mary Jo Foley is linking to some slide assets from Microsoft that are intended to show Microsoft partners how to stem the tide of the iPad and other Tablets coming down the pike. The HTC Merge, an Android handset with a landscape-oriented QWERTY slider, may be launching on regional carrier Alltel’s network rather than Verizon Wireless’s national network. It’s unclear if the leaked image is indication of such change as the handset shown in the picture is still devoid of physical branding other than a wallpaper on the [...]

Shawn Durbravac has put together a list of Tablets launched at CES 2011. It’s a long one. It’s, in my opinion, and overwhelming one and just by the sheer weight of the list you can see that by next year this time, this list will probably be a lot smaller with a lot of culling [...]

The company had recently revised its data plan marketing materials, to now explicitly specify that the $30 data plan refers to “3G” smartphones and feature phones. The addition [...]

Microsoft is fighting an uphill battle against the iPad and has outlined how it hopes partners will fight that battle in the near future. There’s a PowerPoint floating around that encourages Windows 7 slate resellers to sell directly against the iPad with some pretty stale arguments. Keep in mind, these PowerPoint slides are intended to [...]

Among other problems I ran into (literally) over the weekend, my media PC suffered a failure to save application data, which wreaked havoc with my ability to watch online video and reduced my Wacom pen tablet to a mouse in pen form. Internet TV and Netflix in Windows Media Center kept crashing. Saved passwords for [...]

The earlier news that the Motorola Xoom will be priced at $799 may be premature. Engadget has uncovered both a launch date and a tip that it will be priced at a lower $699.99. But will it be enough to quell the critics?

If true, this is a wrong move. Android Central has uncovered data that lists the Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) of the Motorola Xoom Tablet at $799. I would assume that is before any subsidy. Even so, in my view that’s steep for a Tablet in this day and age.

Maybe the naming committee at Toshiba is just having a hard time or maybe not having a name for the promised new 10 inch Tablet is all a part of the tease. Regardless, Toshiba has launched a new web site to tease its upcoming Android Tablet. And it smacks at its competitors pretty much all [...]
