Motorola Joins Wireless Power Consortium Along with HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson

Could an Android smartphone made by Motorola that has wireless charging capabilities integrated be coming your way soon? Hopefully, yes, as Motorola has joined rivals HTC, Samsung, LG, and Sony Ericsson in coming together with the Wireless Power Consortium, which has in the past agreed to a universal wireless charging standard called Qi. Like wired power charging standards–mini and micro USB connectors, for instance–Qi will be an inter-operable standard, meaning that a wireless charger from HTC could power an LG or Motorola smartphone.

As it stands today, there are a number of wireless charging solutions, but not many of them play nice with their rivals. Palm, now a part of HP, had delivered a novel charger at the time of the Palm Pre’s unveiling called the Touchstone charger, which allowed users to touch the Pre to the Touchstone’s magnetic dock where the Palm Pre would recharge itself without a cable being attached. Since then, Powermat, Duracell, Energizer, and others have embarked on the wireless charging phenomenon.

However, as solutions from third-party charger-makers such as Duracell and Powermat have not gotten formal approval into smartphone designs by smartphone-makers, those solutions require bulky adapter cases. Essentially, the case will have a plug that plugs into the phone’s micro USB charging port. With the case, then, the phone, will be able to wirelessly charge when touching the charging base station. However, those solutions are bulky and require additional hardware cases with adapters when you upgrade device. As manufacturers like Motorola and HTC have agreed on the Qi standard, smartphones will have inter-operable wireless charging capabilities without bulky add-ons, providing a sleeker look like the Palm Pre.
