iPad 2: What Would Prompt You to Upgrade from the Original iPad?

Published

on

Apple’s iPad has been incredibly successful and there are now millions of proud iPad owners out there. A good chunk of those iPad owners are completely satisfied with their iPads and won’t upgrade any time soon, regardless of how great the iPad 2 may be. A smaller portion of iPad owners will dump the original iPad in favor of the iPad 2 the second they get the chance, almost no matter what’s  introduced next week. I think the largest segment of iPad owners will just wait and see. Apple will have to really knock their socks off in order to get them to plunk down another $499 or more for the iPad 2.

If Apple expects the masses to migrate to the iPad 2 I think the company’s going to have to go beyond some of the speculated features. Sure, a bigger speaker and higher res display would be nice, but it probably won’t be enough to get average joe iPad user to go through the hassles and expense of upgrading to the iPad 2.

I’m planning on upgrading to the iPad 2 no matter what (within reason), but I don’t think a lot of my friends and family will be doing so.

What kind of features and specs Apple have to announce to get you to upgrade to the iPad 2?

You are not getting it, the main market is not for people to upgrade, the real win is for those who are still not getting the fact that iPad is the best computing device. IPad 2 by simply being available will probably reduce the cost of existing versions creating a market for those who want the great iPad but cannot afford it. There are also many who have been told by the likes of your article and all laptop vendors to wait for the next version :-(

Gadget loving people like you and I are sure to upgrade and in fact I will keep both models. We are not the market for iPad 2. iPad HD will kill the so called competition who have failed to even sell close to iPad’s first quarter. It will also push the newspaper vendors to jump inboard our risk being further marginalized.

Go Apple, innovate, increase your market share, improve our digital lives…

Jailbreaked, my iPad is a sort of iPad 3…

    Why ?

Because you can ad some good apps unknown from ordinary iPad users :

    – SBsettings (a single compact pop-up panel with on/off switches or sliders for : Sound, Brightness, Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, KeepAwake, Location, Data, AutoCorrect, Lock Rotation, Process control, Free Memory, AdBlocker…)

    – Backgrounder (for real multitask, coupled with virtual memory swap file)

    – Circuitous (Pop-up control panel for backgrounded apps)

    – Veency (coupled with UltraVNC, i see my iPad screen on my PC monitor. An for the PC screen control on the iPad, i use TeamViewer)

    – FullForce (Some apps designed for standard iPhone are emphazed for best rendering on the big iPad screen)

    – Mouse (for working with a bluetooth mouse)

    – Display Out (alls apps can be view on XVGA monitor, and not only the video out or Keynote projection)

    – iPad Remote and iPod Server (Each of the two are on my iPhone and on my iPad. I can control by WiFi with the iPhone, the music library of the iPad connected to my Hi-Fi… Or iPad control iPhone library..

    – Winterboard for iPad look customization.

    – ActionMenu (for an enhenced menu with voice reading, go up and down, Favorites past

    – Activator (gesture manager)

    – AdBlocker (Less advertising for a speediest web experience)

    – Tethering from iPhone to iPad with MyWi app.

So, not sure to see everything of that featured in an iPad 2 with iOS 5… But with these tools, my iPad is more productive.

And for the hardware, my whish list ist :

    – 1 Mo RAM (256 Mo is a true shame !)
    – A SDXC card reader
    – A mini USB port
    – A Webcam
    – A Pixel Qi like screen for outdoor real viewing (and more battery juice)
    – A mat screen instead of the muddy crazy glossy actual one…

    Have a good day !

Lorie – the points you make are great – but you get all of these things out of the box with Android 3.0 – yes you don’t have the same number of apps (that will come with time – the number of phone apps is already proving that, and the number of big tech names standing behind android will also lend it weight). I also concede it may be buggy right now, but again Google’s always responded and fixed these extremely quickly – what do you think?

Less than 20 optimized apps for Android 3.0 Honeycomb !

      An some bugs….

I will wait one year more… But i can easily change my mobile plateforme : iPad + iPhone.

I prefer a full custom OS than waiting each time for a new jaibreak to be free again when new iOS is available…

I think that apple should give everyone who purchased an iPad this past year a new iPad 2 with trade in. Or I think people should stop (including me) stop purchasing from not only apple but all these companies that keep charging us an arm and a leg for the phones then letting the phone companies rape us again with data charges and voice plans.
Maybe we including ME should start reverting back to the mighty pen and paper. (coming from my iPad). LOL BUT SERIOUSLY.
