Apple iPad 2 Gets Verizon 3G Option

Published

on

As we predicted yesterday, the new iPad 2 will be compatible with Verizon’s 3G network. The original iPad was available with WiFi-only or with the capability to connect via WiFi and AT&T’s 3G network. Now iPad 2 shoppers will be able to choose between the two carriers.

Verizon began selling the original iPad alongside a Novatel MiFi hotspot last fall. The solution wasn’t as elegant as built-in 3G, but users could of course get online with other 3G devices if they wanted to.

iPad 2 buyers will have to shell out $130 extra for the 3G option compared to the WiFi-only models.

Apple is not introducing a Verizon 4G LTE compatible iPad model at this time. Verizon’s 4G network is still brand new and we’ve seen a delay in other 4G LTE mobile devices. The HTC Thunderbolt, the first 4G Verizon phone, is taking longer than expected to come to market. Verizon began shipping the Motorola Xoom with 4G LTE disabled and is requiring early buyers to send the device back in for a fix in about 90 days.

This was pretty expected and obvious. As much as I dislike Apple, I hate AT&T more, and it’s nice to give my not-so-tech-savvy friends an alternative to AT&T.
