HTC Flyer Inking Demo

Published

on

Our friends Steve ‘Chippy’ Paine and Sascha Pallenberg got their hands on an HTC Flyer in Germany and demonstrate its inking chops. The inking experience looks mediocre, with palm rejection only working some of the time.

The small Android tablet isn’t shipping with Honeycomb, but Android 2.3, which is what you’ll find on smartpphones. On the plus side of things, the HTC Flyer does have the HTC Sense interface that many Android fans rave about.

The Galaxy Tab makes an appearance for comparison purposes. The HTC Flyer will go on sale via Vodaphone in April or May in Germany.

What do you think of the Flyer’s inking capabilities?

Looks good to me. It might be the device that I’ve been looking for all these years that the UMPC didn’t deliver. Hopefully there will be 3rd party app support for this. What was the last small screen device that had an active digitizer? The 5″ OQO that ran Windows? This is more portable and definitely lighter.

I took the plunge on an HP Slate 500, but the HTC Flyer was the only other tablet I was seriously considering. I really hope they charge a reasonable price, at least for the wifi-only version.

I’m not sure if the person demonstrating knows exactly how the HTC Flyer reacts to the pen’s presence. Makes it difficult to tell if any perceived latency is a cause of unrefined software or user error.

I just hope HTC doesn’t blow it with this. The Flyer is setting a precedent as the first Android tablet to have N-trig DuoSense, and I want to see Android become just as capable an inking platform as Windows on a typical Tablet PC is.
