Asus Eee Pad Transformer Gets Unboxed Ahead of Retail Launch

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer, which we saw initially at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, was obtained by a lucky YouTuber who unboxed the the slim tablet. The tablet, which is sold separate from its transforming notebook dock, is slim and runs on Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet operating system.

With a 10.1-inch screen, 5-megapixel rear camera, and an NVIDIA dual-core Tegra 2 chipset with GeForce graphics roots, the Eee Pad Transformer is expected to priced under $500 in a WiFi-only iteration, making it one of the more affordable large-screen tablets that will compete nicely against the rival Acer Iconia Tab A500 WiFi edition that’s expected to be launched later this month. Both devices offer similar specs and comparable price tags. What sets the Eee Pad Transformer apart from other Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets is the optional docking accessory, which adds a full keyboard and trackpad to the mix to transform the Android tablet into an Android smartbook. Unlike Bluetooth keyboards or keyboards with a dock, the Eee Pad Transformer’s laptop dock is a well-integrated solution that when closed will offer protection to the slate’s glass display, much like a traditional notebook.

The Eee Pad Transformer will also compete against the Motorola Xoom, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the webOS-powered HP TouchPad with similar screen sizes. The LG G-Slate and the iPad 2 are other competitors along with the smaller 7-inch RIM BlackBerry PlayBook.
