Motorola Droid Bionic Cancelled?

Published

on

There is a recent speculation that the Motorola-made Droid Bionic Android smartphone for Verizon’s 4G LTE network may have been cancelled. The device is said to have heat issues related to the device’s dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset overheating and having compatibility issues with Verizon’s 4G network.

Sources to Phone Arena reported that both the Motorola Atrix 4G for AT&T and the Verizon Droid Bionic suffered from overheating issues, which interfered with reception. However, Motorola was able to resolve the Tegra 2 issues prior to the Atrix’s release while the Droid Bionic issues still persist.

According to the blog, Motorola will be focusing its efforts on other smartphones, including the rumored Droid X 2 and the Droid 3, the latter device has a landscape-oriented sliding QWERTY keyboard like its predecessors. The Droid X 2 will have similar features to the Bionic, including a 4.3-inch qHD high resolution display, front- and rear-facing cameras, and a dual-core CPU. However, unlike the Bionic, the Droid X 2 will instead be a 3G smartphone and won’t benefit from the faster mobile broadband speeds of the Droid Bionic’s LTE support.

If the Droid Bionic is cancelled, Verizon will have the Thunderbolt, Samsung Droid Charge, and the LG Revolution in its 4G Android smartphone lineup.

This is a huge debate amongst all of the droid forums. Why are so many people claiming this phone is cancelled without any official word form Moto or VZW? This is causing several people to jump ship to the HTC TB. I imagine if no word is released there will also be many people jumping on the Droid Charge, however if the rumored $300 price tag is true and the Tiered Data plan for 4G come true, i would expect Verizon to loose a good amount of business. There are a LOT of Moto Droid fans out there very upset by this news, not just because its the first 4G Moto Droid to hit VZW, but also purely because the design of the Bionic. I would hope Moto and Verizon realize this and stick this one through. Not all of us are fans of the Droid X, X2 and Targa Design.

Sounds like a power play to force Motorola’s hand. With people jumping ship to the HTC model, Motorola will be forced into a release. It would be highly unlikely that Motorola would cancel the Bionic as it has had far too much press to allow them to back out at this point. Will Motorola bite and release? Doubtful. I believe the real player that has the final say is Verizon, and I’m sure they could care less about the rumor mill. Selling the TB makes them the same profit as selling the Bionic.

I have had a Motorola Atrix for 6 weeks which is basically the same as the Bionic and it has never over heated nor has it had any reception problems. The phone is very fast and I would rate it overall a 5 out of 5.

First of all this news story is well over a week old, Poor reporting, get up to speed. Most people don’t know how many millions that have gone into R and D on this phone. One person or leak can make the whole barrel go bad. From what I see on the net its only one leak, so everyone has to jump the ship and exploit a companies/phones glitches, which by the whey is just part of the proccess of making a new product. Don’t for get the iPhone when the first few models came out all the rumores. I seriously douby that there going to ditch the phone with so much invested.. More than likely the phone is OK, its just some type of software that Verizon is trying to push onto the phone like so many other phones that they’ve dicked with, software junk that wasn’t originally supposed to go onto the phone.

I think this is all rumours created by verizon to make sure it can keep pushing its other new smart phones like the thunderbolt and preowned phones like the Droid X. We probably will still see the bionic come out in may/june.
