iPhone Tracker Shows Your Tracks

Published

on

Do you know where your iPhone says you’ve been? If you’re one of those folks who are curious about how your smartphones track you this little application offers an interesting look into where you’ve been. iPhone Tracker installs on an OSX device that you’ve been syncing your iPhone to. It then scans your iPhone backup files for a hidden file that contains your location info. If it finds that file it creates a graphical display of where you’ve been with your iPhone.

The open source iPhone Tracker doesn’t send that data anywhere. But the data is available and of course we all know that smartphones have GPS info that could be used to locate where we are or where we have been. I’m not one who worries too much about that since its been going on for quite some time, but I know some who do quite a bit.The FAQ on the iPhone Tracker site tells you how this all works and provides some hints as to how to keep prying eyes away (essentially encrypt everything).

For what it’s worth, if you want to see where you’ve been with your iPhone, it’s might be worth a look. As you can see from the picture it displayed from my data below, my travels have been pretty well documented.

I think you might have missed the point… about this whole story… this storage of your tracks is a persistent unknown feature to users that the software reveals.. its also unencrypted information which puts it at risk on a lost phone or any device with iTunes that it’s synced with. They only made this software so users could understand what was happening in a visual way rather than trying to read some raw data.
