Symbian Anna Update Shown on Nokia N8 On Video

Published

on

The Nokia N8 is by far one of my favorite phones for its excellent camera and sleek design, but the handset is not without fault, which is a reason why I am looking forward to when Nokia will release its Anna update for the device’s Symbian^3 operating system. Currently, the Nokia N8, even on its most current firmware, suffers some issues related to lag, constant freezes, and random reboots. Hopefully, Anna will fix those issues. The anticipated Anna update was caught on video recently showing some of the improvements to the Symbian^3 operating system running on the Nokia N8 hardware.

Anna brings along with it some new cosmetic and design changes to the look and feel of the Symbian operating system in addition to anticipated bug fixes. In the Spanish video, posted above, Anna shows off a new portrait-oriented full QWERTY keyboard, a first for the N8 since the device was released with a landscape QWERTY and portrait-oriented T9 keyboard, along with an updated browser and support for new icon graphics.

The Anna package is supposed to come pre-loaded on some devices, like the Nokia E6 and the X7 when they are released.

Anna is more formally known as Symbian^3 PR 2.0. The update is anticipated for flagship devices like the N8, E7, and C7 this summer.

According to Nokia Conversations, the official blog of Nokia, the run down of the features update for Anna include a new, improved touch-centric browser with a URL entry bar (the current browser requires you to navigate through some clicks of the the two soft buttons on the button), Ovi Maps with social network integration and check-in, a new Ovi store, social network integration in contacts, and an enhanced Ovi Suite. These features should help keep Symbian stay current with newer mobile operating systems like Android, which delivers nice integration with social networks and the ability to check-in while on the go. From a pure usability perspective, the two features I am looking forward to on my N8 are the new browser and the new portrait-oriented keyboard!

Enhanced Browser (v7.3): high value touch UI improvements, including URL entry bar, always visible ‘Go Back’ and extended toolbar buttons and search-integrated address field; better user responsiveness, faster history navigation and page loading, split screen virtual Qwerty keyboard.

Enhanced Ovi Maps (v3.06): smarter search; Check-in to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquareor local social networks; ability to share places via email and SMS, and also with friends using non-Nokia phones; public transport network lines view; update and download full country maps via WLAN

Enhanced Ovi Store (v2.06.xx): increased file size limits for downloading over WLAN

Enhanced Social (v1.3): status updates in contact card, ability to retweet and view follower list in Twitter, higher resolution image uploads, ability to add caption to images

Enhanced Ovi Suite (v3.x): works seamlessly with the latest version of Ovi Suite to update the device software, download free street maps, download new music and discover the latest mobile apps, back up the device to keep content safe, and sync content with Ovi.

Interesting comments and thoughts, but I have never had any issues such as freezing, random reboots, etc. with my NAM N8. I didn’t have the issues on PR1.1 and still don’t have them on PR1.2. Maybe it’s a regional or carrier based issue?

You guys are the lucky ones. It constantly shuts down for me and boots only after like 10-15 minutes if i am lucky. I stopped using this phone and went back to by slow and stupid iphone 3g for the time being..hoping some PR 10.0 might fix some of these issues.

You should go to a Nokia carecenter. Your problem looks like the known broken phone’s, they reboot for no reason and most of the time won’t go on for a while. You should get a free new one.

Good luck replacing it in store unless you can get the problem to happen in front of them. I had many intermittent problems on my first N8 (Camera buttons occasionally not working, notification light not working, etc.and I had to threaten them with the TIO and Department of Fair Trading before they would give me a new phone. Many of the problems were fixed with the new one, but over time the freezing, lagging and random reboots have started to surface.

i hope they fix the equalizer for the musicplayer, update video to at least 30 pics pr, sec and keep the t9 input, as I personally don’t like qwerty, but I would love they do as SE and make words visible, so you can choose the one you would like to use, and that the wordbook save at least 1000 words, as SE is almost unlimited. To have visible apps like accu weather on the start screen would be nice too, as Samsung used to have and it works fine.
