Android 3.1 Now Supports Lossless FLAC Audio Format

In addition to some of the more publicized features of the Android 3.1 OS update announced by Google at I/O and the OS’s support for hardware-accelerated Adobe Flash 10.2 videos, the new version of Honeycomb will also bear support for FLAC. FLAC, which stands for free Lossless Audio Codec, is an audio file format, similar to MP3, but will offer cleaner, richer tunes to audiophiles and sound snobs.

Unlike MP3 and some other audio codecs out right now, FLAC’s audio quality, being that it’s lossless, does not degrade as audio files get compressed. Compression, which is often used with audio files to save on storage space, will result in smaller-sized FLAC files that still delivers high quality sounds, and now the format is supported natively on Android 3.1 without requiring any third-party players.
