iPad 3 Rumors Point to an LED Backlit LCD Display

While the iPad 2 is still fairly new, having been only made available for purchase in the U.S. several months ago and is still being rolled out internationally, Apple is already looking to secure components for the next-generation tablet, perhaps dubbed as the iPad 3.

Taiwan news DigiTimes is reporting that LED backlight units from several component makers are getting certified from Apple for the iPad 3. If true, this would mean that Apple’s next tablet would not utilize an AMOLED-base display from Samsung as previously rumored. Instead, it may use an LED backlit LCD display if the DigiTimes’ sources are correct.

One such component-maker receiving certification for the LED backlit unit is Radiant Opto-Electronics. The certification for the actual display panels is being said to be “still in progress.”

Currently, display panels for the current iPad 2 are made by Samsung and LG Displays. Chimei Innolux is still undergoing the final phases of certification to provide the LCD screens for the iPad 2.

Similarly, rival Motorola is seemingly already working on its second-generation Xoom tablet, dubbed the Xoom 2. Evidence of the tablet was found on the site re-design, and it’s not un-common for manufacturers like Apple and Motorola to work on next-generation products while they have just released current-generation devices.
