Qualcomm: Dual-Core ARM Snapdragon CPUs Will Outperform Quad-Core Rivals
At the Qualcomm-hosted Uplinq conference in San Diego, California, Qualcomm was upbeat and optimistic about its Snapdragon chipset. The company says that its dual-core Snapdragon are efficient enough that it will out-perform quad-core offerings from rivals.
Though company senior VP Rob Chandhok didn’t mention any rivals by name, he cites Qualcomm’s implementation of asynchronous processing as key to the dual-core chips leading performance and lower power consumption as both cores do not need to be used for lower-powered tasks.
Qualcomm had laid its attack on NVIDIA before with a recently released video showing the merits of its single-core Snapdragon on an HTC Thunderbolt against the dual-core Tegra 2 on an Atrix 4G.
In terms of the quad-core race, Qualcomm will be there, but isn’t rushing to do it as the company says that it wants to nail down the experience rather than be the first out of the gate. It will likely port its experiences with asynchronous processing to its quad-core Snapdragon chips; a few Snapdragon prototypes were shown at Computex to power some Windows 8 systems.
Additionally, it’s been speculated that Qualcomm, along with Texas Instruments, are being considered as reference chipsets for Android Ice Cream Sandwich designs.
