HTC EVO 4G Gingerbread Update Kills Netflix Support

Published

on

Update: Fix is on the way.

This isn’t good, HTC EVO 4G owners. This isn’t good at all. It looks like the EVO 4G”s recent bump to Android 2.3 Gingerbread has caused Netflix to go haywire, haywire in the sense that playback has stopped working. It’s bad enough that it appears that the app has been pulled from the market for EVO 4G users as well. Thankfully, Netflix is very aware of the problem and a fix is getting cooked up for release at some point in the (hopefully) near future.

Netflix

Netflix has been acting up since EVO owners saw Gingerbread and today, Netflix confirmed that the Android 2.3 software is the one to blame. The company also exclaimed that it’s working on a fix but that there is no timetable as to when it will be out.

We’d have to think that this is a major priority for Netflix, one because of how many people own Sprint’s EVO 4G and two, because they have already taken some heat for not having the app ready for a lot of the big name Android devices out there.

Curious as to which ones? Well, HTC ThunderBolt, the Samsung Droid Charge, the Motorola Droid X, the Motorola Droid X2, and the Droid 2 just to name a few of the devices.

So, keep those pitchforks at the idle for now, EVO 4G owners, we should know something soon.

I agree. Netflix is gone for GB users. Shes probly still on 2.2. If she updated it was probly the prl,or the update failed & they think it worked. Nobodys Evo on 2.3.3 has Netflix,it even disappeared from my list of installed apps,& the Market altogether. If ur still on 2.2 u can use it still.

I’m not updating to 2.3 until this is fixed.  Netflix is still working on my old EVO running 2.2, but I cannot download it to my new EVO.  Bummer, my new EVO is now just a battery charger!

Ive downloaded every Netflix app, boyh stock, updated,& evety modded apk,zip i could find. The cest i could do was sign in,use my queue, but wen i tried to stream it started for a mere second then went white screen & back to Netflix app. Theirs 2 apks that install, let u enter ur email & password, but none will still stream video. Ive tried them all. Just google android Netflix app,& xda, theres plenty of modded/hacked netflix version to try. If one does work please email me the link. Or if u can root ur updated 2.3.3 Evo,please let me know how. My device is still currently S-off,but nothin has been able to root. Ive used Gingerbreak to root GB & Froyo devices. Guess ill wait for Unrevoked to root again.

        • Ronnyhawks

          06/12/2011 at 4:04 pm

the only way to root right now is to run 3.70.651.1 RUU and let it wipe your phone of 2.3.3 and bring it back to 2.2 version. from this point you can run unrevoked 3

        • Jroseusn

          06/13/2011 at 8:43 am

Unrevoked 3 worked just fine to root 2.3

        • Marsdenkenneth

          06/16/2011 at 6:44 am

if unrevoked wont work to root after the 2.3 update, then yeah revert back to 2.2 and root.. You can throw a 2.3 rom on after however the sense roms are all based off of the desire HD or from the leaked Kingdom (aka evo 3d) rom. Cm7 will run Netflix fine though and also supports custom kernels which the Ginger sense roms don’t cuz HTC hasn’t released the new kernel yet. Hope this helps.

is bump the same as app share?  app share just sends a link that, when followed, says device not compatible

Everything works in the app EXCEPT playback.  So managing your queue, checking out new movie details, etc. all work as expected so far…

I was so bummed when I went to try and watch something on my phone on Netflix at lunchtime and it just kept taking me back to the home screen.  I hope this gets fixed soon because I loved having access to Netflix on my phone.  I would have never accepted the 2.3 update if I knew Netflix wouldn’t work any longer.

Don’t feel too bad. I specifically chose not to upgrade due to the Netflix issue. Well, every time I launched Netflix on my non-updated EVO, it kept telling me a newer version of Netflix was available and sent me to the market automatically. Once at the market, I received a message indicating the file could not be found. So even though I did not update, I still couldn’t watch Netflix.

My wife is in the hospital with complications of ms. I intended to keep her company and keep myself from total insanity by watching old Andy Griffith episodes on Netflix with my EVO while she slept and tries to recoup from this. Imagine my disappointment this morning when I signed on to my Netflix account. This bites. I actually had to read. Ugh.

Voice to text feature just got crappier with the new update. I’m sick of emo developers using their quiet, passive, emo friends as beta testers! Or worse, not using live testing from fresh eyes AT ALL like the idiots at Zipcar, and collecting bugs ONLINE as if regular people are nerdy enough to waste time documenting every little detail!

Get some vocal, non calm, east coast communicators to test yo sh!t before you release it to the world!

If thats mean and harsh, file a complaint with the department of hurt feelings at the city of berkeley and get therapy so you can be a Better developer. No more excuses!

Really? You don’t like customization? To me the iphone is a step backwards until they offer something new. Don’t get me wrong, the iphone 4 has a nice screen but thats about it. I’m sick of hearing about people saying, “well fine if I can’t have this I’m just going back to the iphone!”. Thats just so immature.

Voice to text barely works! Gingerbread sucks! don’t update!

Better editing and slightly smoother operation without task killer not worth losing critical features!

  21. Vomiting Tenderloin Crackhead

    06/08/2011 at 6:14 pm

Update. The voice to text feature is actually okay. I figured out that you must say “period” or “question mark” or something at the end of your sentence to make it work. But that’s not the point. The point is that the old version worked fine without all that.

Unaffected from old to new version is the long press of the magnifying glass in the bottom right corner. This is a brilliant feature. When you long press it, you can say “text to (name) or “note to self” or simply speak search terms and it will just do everything without typing or swyping.

    • Empire Of The Sun Quentin

      06/10/2011 at 4:36 am

Crackhead, you were right the first time. There are definitely problems with speech entry in text messages and gmail, which now shows a completely different interface for those two apps. However, regular google searches through the magnifier (short or long press) are still ok and have the old interface.

Personal question, but in between vomiting and repeated hits from the crack pipe, how will you have time to actually work at Twitter once hq moves into the tenderloin?

Exactly I couldn’t have said it better myself. Google makes the Operating system, not the 3rd party software. It is the software makers responsibility to keep up with the updates and netflix is doing a piss poor job. I’d be curious to know how much money netflix puts in development for this app. Most likely not very much.

Is there a way to uninstall the update. This is a bunch of bull. What’s tho point in having a smart phone that can’t do things a smart phone is supposed to do. I went on the Android market on my laptop and noticed that it doesn’t have my account (my device) as having an EVO anymore, instead it says I have a HTC PC36100 which is incompatible with the Netflix app. Any of you notice this too? I wonder if this could be part of the skullf*ck.

    • Dunci

      06/09/2011 at 3:10 am

HTC PC36100 IS the EVO… its the model number… Also I have CM7 and it works perfectly.

      • Kooda Aguirre

        06/09/2011 at 3:28 am

Thanks, I didnt know that. The last time I set up my account I saw EVO 4G on there. Why is it saying that when I was using Netflix all this time?

        • Dunci

          06/09/2011 at 5:00 am

I went from CM7 which is also 2.3 just aftermarket rom where netflix DOES work, to Sprints/HTC rom 2.3 just to check out what has changed. I was very disappointed. 1 as we all know Netflix has flopped, 2. It didn’t come with the New Sense which although doesn’t bother me that much. I wasn’t too fond of it anyway. But the 3rd which sent me back to CM7 was that the compass doesn’t even work at all. It runs like if it was a happy meal toy.. Shame.. I was expecting soo much better!

After research rumor has it that netflix knows and is working on there problem! I really do hope so cause its the best idea ever for an application. This sux!! I just found out Bout the app 3 days ago and little did I know an update would ruin it. It worked flawlessly before and now isn’t even in the market on my EVO. I hope they get it fixed ASAP …. Please!!!! I’m glad that other people like me have experienced the same problem cause if we all are raising some heck maybe they will figure it out faster LOL!!!

    06/09/2011 at 4:24 pm

Complete and utter BS. U would think that netflix/htc/android would have resolved this issue prior to making this update avaiable. Netflix is one of the top 10 downloaded apps since its release for the EVO. How can any company release an operating system which is not compatible with one of the most popular apps. Not to mention individuals who signed up for a pay service (netflix) just because it was available on the EVO. Get it FIXED.

I hope so, i almost want to roll back to 2.2 bcuz of how often i used Netflix. I did find a decent movie streamer app with new/old movies & a great selection but its a $6 app & only woks on a strong 3G or wifi signal,it called MegaViewer Pro. It has alot of bootleg/cam movies but is very well stocked with new movies, some still in theatres, some arent even available for rent yet,& rental new releases, but Netflix had a much better picture quality & played well even over 3G,& wifi. Im waiting Netflix. I hav a paid acct. & i want my Netflix back on my Evo. The flashplayer 10.3 update seemed to help with playin videos from the net, where Flashplayr workd great on my Evo on 2.2.Wen i updated to 2.3.3 i culdnt play mobile flash videos, until after Adobe updated 10.3. Now it works fine again. Way to be on top of things adobe. As soon as netflix works ill be happy, but what happened to the rolling 3-D look of the icons like ive seen on most 2.3 GB devices. My Evo rolls thru the apps yhe same. I kindavlike the rollin look.Up,over, down, for the app icons. Othrr than that it seems great. So far.
Disable fast boot, thats whats causing the white screen, several app problems,& restarting Sense. I turned off fastboot & havnt had an issue yet. I wish i could root my device again but nothin works yet. Not unrevoked, not Gingerbreak,& im still s-off too. My bootloaders unlocked. Im hoping that might help with rooting.

          06/12/2011 at 6:27 am

lol. Now I’m judging. OK…since people like you don’t get it let me reword it. IN MY OPINION IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO CHOOSE A CELL PHONE BASED ON NETFLIX. I just wanted to capitalize that in case you miss it. It is an application and your going to “judge” a phone because the people making the 3rd party software don’t invest enough to keep it up and running? Its not the phone manufacturers or googles fault, IT IS NETFLIX. Why support a company that doesn’t care about what you want? I’m just saying THAT. OKAY?

my point exactly i have an epic and a evo i hardly ever use them for phone calls emails n sms n face book internet porn and netflix the reasons i bought the phones was due to the feature heavey claims made to me and behold b.s should i not tell any and everyone i know not to waste their money the phones and or co. suck and you wont get what u paid for im on the go all day what good is my netflix now im never home

Having a hard time understanding your post but you are comparing a feature of a car to a feature of a third party application made for an android phone? Wow…thats really ignorant. Be mad at NETFLIX, not the maker of a damn phone. NETFLIX promised compatibility. NETFLIX is responsible for the updates. NETFLIX made the claims and the app. Be mad all you want but its not going to change anything. Email NETFLIX everyday if you can’t live without the app. Spam their email or whatever you have to do. I spent the first day mad. Then after 4 days I canceled. I don’t deal with that crap. I had NETFLIX for 2 years. So tired of DRM bull. Like i really want to pirate off of NETFLIX mobile service. Funny thing is all I have to do is search a movie database and download any movie I want. I love how they alienate customers and make them pirate.

They better fix this quick… they had to know an update was coming, why didn’t they update the app before now?

What’s really pissing me off is a pop-up shows a message that there’s an update available and when I click on it nothing happens. They need to fix it quick.

This sucks. We wait forever to get a Netflix app and after an update on the evo, Netflix just disappears from the market along with the playback ability. Why am I not surprised. Netflix is lucky I have a PS3 and a PC, otherwise I would probably cancel the service.

Like y’all after update on EVO Netflix stopped working. Now they have a notification asking if we want to update but when I hit the “OK” button it says it can’t find the application. What’s up with that?

My next phone will be windows 7. This update broke netflix and swype. I’m sick of open source garbage. I’ll pay for quality instead.

Netflix has disappeared from the market. Now an app called phoneflix is here in its place but it doesn’t let you log in. WTF has happen?
