Nintendo Wii U Controller Brings Mobile Tech to the Gaming Console

Published

on

Nintendo unveiled the Wii U at E3 2011 today. The Wii U controller is what really caught our eyes. The Wii U is a tablet-like controller that augments what’s on the screen.

While we don’t normally cover gaming consoles here at GBM, we find the Nintendo Wii U controller particularly interesting. It blends a lot of technology we’re used to seeing on tablets and mobile devices with the famous Wii remote. The Wii U packs motion sensing, a multi-touch display, digitizer, video streaming and video chat camera into a device that makes console gaming more flexible.

One of the Wii U’s best features is that its 6.2″ display can be used to play any Wii game. This means Wii gamers no longer have to turn off their games when the rest of the family wants to watch a show.

It’s important to note that the Wii U controller is not a gaming tablet on its own. It wirelessly connects to the Nintendo console, which uses proprietary optical discs to deliver HD gaming and content.

The Nintendo Wii U controller will ship with the Wii U, Nintendo’s next-generation console that’s slated to launch in 2012. The new console can be used with the Wii U and/or up to four Wii Remotes.

Nintendo’s put together an excellent guide to the Wii U, which can be found at e3.nintendo.com.
