Motorola Droid Bionic Launching with Unlocked Bootloader?

Published

on

The Motorola Photon 4G, announce earlier today by Sprint, is an extremely attractive device boasting a 4.3 inch qHD display, Tegra 2 processor, and world phone capabilities. Those are great but there is something else that makes the Photon 4G a special phone. It’s going to be coming with an unlocked bootloader.

Droid Bionic

You see, Motorola Android phones like the Droid X, Droid X2, Droid 2, the list goes on, have had their bootloaders locked by Motorola which has made developers have to work extremely hard to find workarounds in to allow owners to customize the devices.

Motorola’s competitor, HTC, recently announced that all of their upcoming devices would have unlocked bootloaders including the HTC Sensation and the HTC EVO 3D and it looks like Motorola may have had a change of heart as well.

While this is huge for Motorola fans and future Photon 4G owners, it’s also extremely awesome for those thinking about the Motorola Droid Bionic, Verizon’s upcoming 4G LTE device. While nothing is for certain yet, it appears very likely that the Droid Bionic could arrive with an unlocked bootloader which would instantly catapult it to the top of wish lists everywhere.

Again, nothing is for sure yet but it’s probably time to get those fingers crossed.

Update: Motorola confirmed to us that it’s their “intention to include the unlockable/relockable bootloader in software releases starting in late 2011, where operator and channel partners will allow it. However, this feature is not included in the software found on PHOTON 4G.”

Le sigh.

Why the picture of an unnamed/unannounced phone?  There are pictures of the photon available.

Honestly I don’t care about a boot loader I dont care if it come with a bling case. I am tired  of hearing the “tweaks” of the phone. All people want to know is when is it coming out and price(Officially). Rumor going around that its going to be out July…others say august. I am tired of people giving the run around. Motorola needs to give a date. I been due for an upgrade since march

Well… you might not care, but I’m glad there is a community of developers and users who do. We happen to like phones that are not wearing straightjackets.

    Verizon will never allow it.

I just hope the article’s assumption is correct. If the Bionic’s unlocked, that will go a long way in my decision to purchase. Albeit, most people probably don’t care or know why this is important.
