HTC Thunderbolt’s New Official OTA Update Leaks Out

Published

on

HTC and Verizon Wireless had promised a new software update, to be delivered over-the-air, to address some problems that early adopters of the HTC Thunderbolt have been experiencing. However, said update has leaked out early thanks to two ROM images–one designed for rooted handsets and the other for un-rooted stock Thunderbolt devices.

The full changes are not detailed, but the new update built into the leaked ROM image is said to deliver a number of fixes, including improved GPS lock time and performance. Other issues addressed include fixing the random reboots that users have experienced ever since the last OTA software update, improving signal strength, and more. There is also now a 3G/4G LTE toggle so users can conserve battery life by switching off 4G and connecting only a 3G network. This is also useful for users who primarily live or work in a 3G-only zone as it would definitely help the battery life on the device as the Thunderbolt won’t have to keep scanning for a 4G network to connect to.

It is advised that you read the warnings on Android Police before trying to install the ROM. The download links are also posted on that site as well. Basically, if you run a rooted device, make sure to download and update with the rooted ROM image as updating with a regular non-rooted image may brick your device.

If the risks are not worth it to you, the OTA update is expected to be pushed out to handsets on June 15th.

The HTC Thunderbolt was the first 4G LTE handset on Verizon Wireless.

About time they give a date for the fix.  I am so tired of my phone rebooting in the midst of important work calls.  It’s especially fun when it happens while not even in use in a meeting … the other folks love the thunderstorm sound effects I make. :-)

The worst phone I have ever had. The sad thing about it is Verizon won’t replace the phone with a different phone.

How long had you had your TB before they replaced it? I have had mine since the week they came out and have had 4 replacements. Is there a way for me to get a different phone when I am already passed the 30 days? This is the worst phone I have ever had, and I just want it to be gone!

Well, it’s now June 15th and no OTA update. VZW strikes again?

I updated my phone with the leaked version. It totally works, not more reboots…. but now skype mobile with video doesn’t work anymore. The battery issue seems to be better now to.

The update did wipe out my phone btw so i had to start over with setting up and personalizing settings. This has bee such a pain

I can’t believe Verizon is doing such a poor job of supporting this phone.

When it works this phone is awesome. It has been working well over the past weekend. The past two weeks have been just trouble. Despite the recent success, I am still waiting on the update to fix the mobile hotspot. I wouldn’t mind the gb update. I installed gb on ha’s dx and it is smooth. I never did have the reboot issue.

I am on my third Thunderbolt and have been unhappy with this phone due to way to many problems. I really would love to replace it with a different phone but i ampast the 30 days. My first generation Motorola Droid was much better! cannot get it to connect wirelessly with my router, well it does connect but then immediately disconnects and this goes on forever! Constantly looses connectivity with data, it will show a 3g connection with 3 bars yet I can’t connect to internet. The contacts app(people) sucks, can’t add any custom labels to identify phone numbers but the few lousy choices that are provided. Battery sucks, and on and on, I am getting pissed off just listing the issues with this junk so I guess I will stop here, but not because I ran out of problems to point out.!Wouldlove to have a class action against HTC on this , my first experience with their products.

Have only had this phone a few months and am unable install in my car for hands free operation and am unable to use the phone at my house as the best I can get is 0-1 bar and verizon just keeps giving me the run around as I’m new to this cell phone thing.
