Will The Real Motorola Droid Bionic Please Stand Up?

Published

on

Yesterday, Motorola threw us a curve ball when it announced via Twitter that its team was working on “new features” for the upcoming and might I say, highly anticipated, Motorola Droid Bionic smartphone.

Before that piece of info was revealed, we thought we knew exactly what we’d be getting at some point this summer. Turns out that we might see a third incarnation of a phone that has been teasing and tormenting the public since it was revealed all the way back in January at CES.

Continuing our Eminem inspired series, we wanted to recap the Droid Bionic’s progress from CES all the way up to yesterday’s events that plunged the Droid Bionic further into the unknown.

Motorola Droid Bionic #1

Motorola Droid BionicThe picture you see there is the Motorola Droid Bionic as we knew it at CES. At the time, the Droid Bionic boasted a high resolution 4.3-inch qHD display, 512 MB RAM, a rear 8MP camera, and of course, access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network. We had heard that this version might possibly be coming in May until trouble started brewing and we subsequently got word that the Droid Bionic was delayed.

After some confusion, Motorola confirmed that yes, the Droid Bionic as we knew it was dead and that it would arrive this summer with a new form factor that the company said would make the phone even better.

The cause of the delay? Something related to Verizon’s 4G LTE network. However, as of today, there is still no clear cut explanation as to what exactly went wrong with this design. Yes, there were issues with 4G LTE, yes Motorola felt like it might have a better design for the Droid Bionic, and yes, there is probably something more to this story that the public will probably never hear.

Motorola Droid Bionic #2

Motorola Targa

Immediately after Motorola delayed the Droid Bionic, speculation about what would replace it was rampant. However, the front runner to replace the old design seemed to be the Motorola Targa which leaked out in March. The Targa theory is unfortunately still unsolved. It’s possible that what you see here might be the next Droid Bionic but then, just a short time ago, another device leaked out calling itself the Droid Bionic.

Motorola Droid Bionic #3

A flood of photos of a device that very well could be the new Droid Bionic leaked out and what it revealed was very interesting. This version of the device was an absolute monster. The device in these photos was sporting a massive 4.5-inch qHD display, had an 8MP camera capable of 1080p video, the ability to dock like the Motorola Atrix, and had a new 3D version of MotoBlur.

Droid Bionic

One look at the back of both this new design and the Targa and you notice some similarities but overall, it doesn’t appear to be the same device.

Droid Bionic

Up until yesterday, this was what we believed we would see at some point this summer. That is until Motorola tweeted something out that caught our attention and sent those dead set on getting the Droid Bionic into another frenzy.

Motorola Droid Bionic #4?

Droid BionicThis is the vague tweet that Motorola put out yesterday which piqued our interest. Has Motorola moved to a third possible design for the Droid Bionic? Did they scrap the 4.5-inch beast? Or are they just adding some stuff to it prior to launch? Sadly, there really is no clear cut answer. The sentence is ambiguous and the new updates the tweet referrers to could be anything.

What Do You Want to See?

As it stands, no one is really quite sure what the Droid Bionic is going to be. It might have a Tegra 2, it might not. It might have a 4.3-inch display, it might have a 4.5-inch one. It might have a 3D version of MotoBlur, it might not. It’s certainly a mysterious device but we have to say, it’s still an extremely exciting one, especially because it’s the most compelling 4G LTE device to date.

So what are you hoping for? Do you want a 4.3-inch version with a Tegra 2? How about an dual-core OMAP processor  instead of the Tegra 2? How about a Droid Bionic with a 4.5 inch screen? Do you want smaller? I think there is at least one thing that we can all agree on though:

Whatever it is that Motorola is cooking up, we want it to get announced sooner rather than later, preferably before July 7th.

If it comes out after the 7/7 tiered data deadline, it will be dead before it even launches.

    Shame, really.

Grandfathered plans should negate this problem and will only affect new subscribers interested in the bionic.

How about you be realistic lynyrd65? Verizon cannot continue to profit and be competitive with their current business model.  Get over it, they aren’t a charity.

Why can’t they just set a release date and role with it? If they keep delyaing it for upgrades it will never come out cause the next upgrade with happen! They are losing costumers by the day and if it doesn’t come out in a resonable time they will lose me too

The July 7th date doesn’t mean much to me.  I will be on the tiered data plan but I doubt I would use 2gb a month as my friends don’t.  When I’m at home or other people’s houses, I’m on wifi.  When I’m at the airport, I’m on wifi.  When I’m in flight, the network is off.  So no big deal to me.

If the Galaxy S II or Motorola Photon comes out before the Bionic, I may just get one of those phones instead.  I think 4.3″ display is big enough so I’m not really excited about a 4.5″ display but if it fits in my pocket, no problem.  If none of these Android phones work very well, then I will wait for the iPhone 5.

2 problems with that statement 1st: “From AT&T” (as oposed to “from apple”) 2nd: the word “May” which only proves that they dont have any better idea than anyone else. The fact is (to paraphrase Jobs himself) an iPhone 5 w/o 4G would be dead before it was released. But that DOES NOT mean that Apple will do anything about it. They’ve been resting on their laurals for the last 2 releases (look at the antenna debacle). iPhone is NOT a viable alternative. The Atrix is the way I’ll go if the Bionic isnt released soon. (although I HATE AT&T)

I’m hoping they up the RAM — most of the next generation of phones (including the already-released Thunderbolt) are over 512MB.  Other than that and a capable battery, I just hope they just come out with this soon!  An unlocked bootloader would definitely be nice as well, mainly just so I can get rid of all the bloatware, but I assume someone will come out with a way to root it soon enough.

I could be completely wrong here but doesn’t the droid bionic #3 pictured above resemble a regular droid? It looks to me like it has a slide out keyboard…ever since that photo has been “leaked” I’ve been thinking that and perhaps its the droid 3. As for the bionic coming out after the teired plans go into effect, I will definitely be purchasing a different phone before them…they should have just released this thing in April and then made all these upgrades for the next version.

Given the insane tech curve for smartphones, I’ve made mostly disappointing purchase decisions in the past, especially for the Blackberry Storm v1!  Not only did I miss out on new phones with better feature/performance that were quickly released after my buy decisions, but the platforms I bought went to market in a wholly unready state with immature H/W, S/W, Firmware, etc. Bummed again and again.

      However . . .

Having retired from a lengthy telecom career, I trust my instincts that the Verizon Droid Bionic will, in fact, be loaded with stable technologies and that it is unlikely that any must-have breakthrough features would cause me to wait and see. I’m all in with the Bionic.

Want the phone, but not worth paying extra for the data for it. By the time this phone comes out, other phones will have dual cores.  iPhone 5 with dual core would beat leaked information of bionic.
This phone is dying with the long the wait.

I found out at the VZW store today that if you are not already on a 4G plan before July 7th, then you will be required to select one of the new tiered data plans coming out.
3G phone to 3G phone will apparently have you grandfathered in, but only then.

July/August is going to be the same as April/May. Many believe and “speculate” just to have hopes shot down. I checked Motorola’s twitter, after seeing several “don’t worry the droid bionic will come out this summer” I asked them if they could give an ETA, July, august, September? What did they do; send me to “Droid Bionic” twitter. I am like wtf. Reason for including September is because summer isn’t official over until sept23. Anyway as for the pictures. Who knows what is the real droid. Many say the 3rd pic is the new droid. Yet the droid bionic twitter still has the first pic as is own pic. So idk which to say is true. Now when I hear about it or I go on the Verizon website and see its coming soon or is available. Then I will believe that, I really hate for rumors to spread and not have an official word. Not to jinx it but from what has been happening, summer will almost be over. Some random “problem” will happen to the phone and they will say, “Umm..sorry but..uhh yeah the Droid Bionic will come out sometime this year…”

Let’s face it, Motorola has blown it…….. A larger screen is not necessarily better. make it a 4.0 inch screen with the 960 X 540 pixel resolution and the Gorilla glass display, dual core, great battery life, and excellent phone reception along with the Gingerbread upgrade and maybe, just maybe they will have a great phone. That said, someone in authority has their head up their you know what diddling around with changes when they could bring a good product to market now, followed in 3-6 months with whatever advanced updates the market warrants. I for one won’t wait much longer for their personal communication device, a.k.a. cell phone to be released for purchase.

Front facing camera, 4.5″ qHD display, dual core (hopefully 2x speed of x), 32GB, 4G LTE, docking station, Android 2.3.4, extended battery, and a smoother faster camera is all I’m looking for. I don’t care when it comes out as long it works properly.

Here’s how I look at it all. I agree that as time goes on all that is happening is that people are getting tired of waiting. As phones come out they are the best of the best, until the next one shows it’s face. People are slowly losing intrest with this phone because of all the games moto is playing. Ok… so the first one wasn’t what moto wanted to put out to the world but they needed something huge for the CES 11′, to grab all of us. ‘It worked.’ I’m not looking for this phone to drive my car. But, let’s face it I’m still with the droid 1. I don’t want, nor can I afford, to buy a new phone every year. I want a phone that will stay competitive for atleast a few years. Give me a large screen 4.5 qHD will work, dual core processor, it be nice to have atleast 2GB of RAM and expand to about 32GB. 8-10 MP HD rear camera/video recorder, and a 5MP front facing camera/video recorder. A strong enough battery to last the day with normal use, and when I say nomal use I’m not talking just sitting on my desk all day with a text here and a text there. I’m talking about playing games, using the 4g LTE to surf the web, play some music even download files. Acutally have a smartphone be smart and use it as such. Heck put to batteries in the phone making it able to swap batteries out with turning off the phone and waiting 15 min to reboot. I really don’t want to wait much longer for this awesome phone. But, if the wait is worth it then I will. For right now moto should give us some sort of information. “Yes, the Bionic has had some problems we have worked them out, and while doing so we have made the screen larger added more RAM incorporated a better front camera. We do apologize for the long delays but feel the wait will be well worth it. We at motorola appreciate your business and look forward to having a launch before 12-21-12.” or something.

1st dual core 4G phone gets my business.  Even if that means switching from Verizon.  Their new tiered pricing does not set well with me.  Sprint is looking better and better.  Personally I’d prefer the Galaxy S2 if it is a 4G phone.

HTC Sensation/ G2x on T-Mobile, and their 4G is worlds faster than Verizon. The plans are dirt cheap and they are merging with AT&T any month now so you will get pretty awesome coverage.

I was told by an associate that works in wireless and the Sam’s Club that I work at that they received paperwork stating that we would have the Bionic in the store in July. I have been waiting on this phone and I will continue to wait. I hate the data cap too though. Its crazy to jump from 5GB-10GB versus having an in between like 8GB. 5GB is just below what I use and 10GB is waaaay too much. I would never use 10GB.

    * no stupid pentile display, the DX2 screen looks like crap
    * Gorilla glass is a must * unlock the boot loader* 1GB of fast RAM* 1.3mp min resolution on the front facing camera, no VGA crap* dedicated camera button and make it a nice round button with a good “click” feel* big battery* solid build quality, no flimsy plastic

I wonder if there are laws against announcing a phone prematurely.  There must be.  I think if manufacturers were aloud to announce a phone before it was official they would do so to get customers to wait.  That has to be why Motorola isn’t saying much official other than tweets.

I have been allowing myself to get really frustrated over Android and over phones lately.  I get frustrated that the choices are so varied.  You have to chose to lose 1 important feature in order to get another you want (like access to Netflix or an HDMI port, or a 8mp camera, or Skype, or RAM, or a FFC…. can’t get it all even with all the options available), you get promised things (like a 4g modem or a working SD card slot, or an upgrade to 2.3) only to not receive them, 1 phone has a shitty battery… one phone has a shitty display, one phone has a shitty overlay.  Either your phone reboots itself, or lags, or “feels cheap”, or costs too much, or has a locked bootloader.  It’s crazy.  I wondered if it was my fault for reading too many blogs and articles.  If I didn’t KNOW what may come out, or if I didn’t know what the problem was with each phone… would I still feel so irritated and frustrated?  Probably not.  If I didn’t read one phone compared to another, would I still have an opinion on which one was the BEST?  Probably not.

I have an original moto droid (with 256mb RAM, with NO FFC, with NO HDMI port, with a 3.7″ screen, and with 2.2.2) and my life doesn’t SUCK.  I can navigate, I’ve got the Netflix app, I can look up porn on the net, I can text and email….  I also have a Galaxy Tab (1ghz single core processor, 3mp camera, 2.2).  I can access the blockbuster app, read my Kindle and Nook books, and listen to Rhapsody all day long.

Imagine being a Droid X1 buyer how good life must be…. getting 2.3, getting the Netflix app, decent battery life….  all of that 1-1.5 years after owning your phone!!  Hell, even the Droid X2 can’t make those claims yet.  Point is…. get the phone you want.  Be happy with it.  Enjoy the hell out of it!!  One day your phone may suddenly be the best out there (like Droid X1 users got to feel for a few weeks).

i understand everyones frustrations, believe me I am right there with you.  Think of this though…they could have released a bionic a few months ago, but they didn’t.  Why?  They are fixing the issues.  They are making it better.  For the first time, Moto is taking its time and doing what we asked…make it the best it can be.  Sure in six months to a year it will be outdated, but thats the smartphone industry right now.  I will hazzard a guess that with all the upgrades that are bound to be added when it comes out, it will be the top phone.  Atleast until next summer.  I still have the og. droid.  I can wait a few more months, just as long as it is a great product.  As a Verizon customer I will already be grandfathered into the data plan, so the wait is no big deal.  Just give me the best damn droid on the market.

I have never had a smart phone.  And I know it will take me a while to learn my way around a smartphone.  But I thought while I was at it (getting a first smartphone), I would get a top of the line model that I would get alot of functionality out of.   I was waiting for the Droid.  But since my MP3 player had a hard drive crash, I have been a bit more anxious to make the jump to a phone that replaces a digital camera, an MP3 player and also my dumbphone….. and does even more.    I think that there are alot of people waiting until the July 7th rumoured release date.   But if they make people wait longer, then people will get tired of waiting.

lets think about this from a buisnes standpoint. Verizon has probably been in contact with Moto and has had them delay the release until after july 7th because they would probably want to use the bionic as a sales driver for the new tiered data plan to help blunt the shock of the price increase. release of the bionic before hand would cause loss of dollars in sales since it would be on the unlimited plan, and aggitation for those who show up after the 7th to find much higher data rates. yeah. so all in all it wouldn’t make good buisness sense to release it before the 7th.

    • swikk

      07/10/2011 at 3:51 pm

I agree… it is  a sound business decision. Shift to tiered data plans, wait for that news cycle to run itself out, and release a monster.Motorola hasn’t done anything interesting since, really, the Droid X  (The Atrix was a fizzle). Verizon has had a very lackluster start to its 4g LTE career and needs something BIG to attract the new masses to their network.

Assuming I don’t accidentally run my phone through the laundry in the next month or so, I’ll wait and see what the Bionic is all about. I hear unlimited 3g is grandfathered into unlimited 4g and I live in an area that is thoroughly covered in LTE. I’d like a duel core LTE phone with lots of ram/rom and an unlocked bootloader. The bootloader is a serious issue, as with any new tech, there’s only so much time a company will put into development for a product before simply upgrading the tech and making us buy a new device.

I too, am the proud owner of an OG Droid. I am amazed at what the Dev community has been able to make it do. Nearly 1.5 years in and my phone gives many current devices a run for there money. These phones arer EXPENSIVE. After the Droid 1, I *need* a device the development community will embrace and will stand the test of time.

I hope this is it. If motorola is smart, and want’s to emulate the success of the OG droid. They have the opportunity right now. All the ingredients are there. LTE, Duel Core Technology, high ram/rom, coupled with an unlocked bootloader. There’s a large community of people desperately waiting for something that fits this profile.

It could put Moto back on top, then again they could blow it.

I’m just hoping that when the bionic does come out it is as dependable and stable as the incredible was for me for a year and a half before i made the huge mistake of getting the troublesome THUNDERBOLT what a total dissapointment that phone was i traded it for the iphone and lost many features i got spoiled with on a droid. I sold the iphone after two weeks and bought a used x ( improvement ) lol  bionic hurry up  so i can use my upgrade

VZW and MOTO are not playing games with the consumer. There is no conspirators here.. I have heard why there has been a delay, and believe me, it will be worth it! The Smartphone is getting even smarter with the Bionic. VZW and MOTO have made the decision to make the “Bionic” live up to its name.

On another note… Tiered pricing doesn’t change a thing for 95% of VZW customers. Yes, using WiFi does help save data. The other carriers have good products and services, and they all have their strengths, but VZW definitely has the highest quality, fastest, and most reliable network in the US, and that’s worth paying for. Sprint = Mazda… VZW = Mercedes.

And one more thing… none of the pictures above represent the Bionic slated for release.

My Moto DROiD 1 is just awesome. I got it in 2009, It now has the Gingerbread OS, 1.25 GHz Processor, 32GB SDHC Card, Flash Player, Netflix, BP7X 1850mAh battery…. Could not be more happy with it.

I doubt any of these new phones can stream two 2 hour movies from Netflix on 3G and still have enough battery to last the rest of the day. My Droid 1 can!

It is probably coming soon because its putting Netflix on there with the TI chip. I’m also REALLY hoping and I’m sure this is an absolute long shot but I’d like to see a 3D screen. That’s all this seems to be missing.
