HTC Rep Confirms Gingerbread for Thunderbolt Coming Soon

Published

on

While hopeful Gingerbread users of the Thunderbolt are waiting anxiously for not only a software patch that would fix the random rebooting issues as well as deliver the latest Android 2.3 version, called Gingerbread, an HTC rep confirms that the next software update will bring both features and is coming soon.

In a letter to a user, the HTC rep was not specific on details, and only mentions that the update will be released soon that ‘will address the reboot issue, and bring the Gingerbread 2.3 upgrade on board, as well as several other enhancements.’

When the Thunderbolt was launched, Gingerbread was promised in Q2, but as the second quarter of the year is coming to a close, it looks like HTC may need a bit more time to deliver on its promise of Gingerbread. Perhaps, one reason for Gingerbread’s delay is the random rebooting issue, and the company along with Verizon wants to ensure that the new software update will address any existing bugs before rolling out the new software.

Dear Adam  XXXXX,

I understand how important it is for your Thunderbolt to function properly and I apologize that you have been experiencing rebooting of the device. HTC and Verizon are aware of this issue and an update will be released soon that will address the reboot issue, and bring the Gingerbread 2.3 upgrade on board, as well as several other enhancements. Although I don’t have an official release date to provide you, this update will be released soon. Please monitor our website for further information as the release date moves closer.

It’s unclear also whether or not the HTC Thunderbolt will also get the newest version of HTC Sense, the company’s latest user interface that debuted on the HTC Sensation and is shipping on the HTC EVO 3D.

If I had a dime for every time I have read “Coming soon!” with regard to just about anything having to do with the Thunderbolt, I could buy my own wireless company and ditch VZW entirely.

    Sheesh.

Yea and I always love how they make the article sound like maybe the delay is because of the reboot issues…

Always speculation from the people that report on this stuff… Bottom line they never know what they are talking about…. They always just guess which in turn starts stupid rumors!

“Coming soon”, yea the usual BS, how about a date? this way we can all stop wondering and get it onthat date.  I hate Apple but at least they know what the hell they are doing with updates

I had the iPhone and went to the Thunderbolt recently. Wow, what a stupid move. This Thunderbolt is the biggest piece of garbage and an absolute joke at best. Apple products just plain work and I did not realize how well they work until I went to this over hyped fancy Thunderbolt. Yes it has some great potential and promise but it has to work and be dependable, which it is far from that. I have wasted alot of money and now I have to go dish out alot more money to get an iPhone again so I will have a phone that works. Not sure if it is an Android issue or a HTC issue but I am not impressed with either. Just my .02

You must not know how your phone works then, Tbolt is a better phone on almost all counts. Guess it makes sense why you’re an iPhone user though…

And LOL @ switching to Sprint’s WiMax over LTE.

my thunderbolt kicks ass. 4g at my home in Los Angeles averages about 32mb/s down (timewarner is 16mb/s). and if you only need that little slice of the internet that apple wants to sell you, I’m sure the iphone is perfect for you.  but those of us who actually like the internet, and all of the wonderful things you can do with it, for free, we are just enjoying the best touch web browsing experience ever.  I have both ipads, and I routinely use my tb instead.  Mean while in the apple garden of eden, also known as ‘the dark garden’, users are forced to buy apps that are rehashed flash games from ten years ago.  oh and buy the way you need a phd to develop an ipad app that a fifth grader could build in flash.  apple computers are the best thing going and the ios has great hardware, but iOS has made software innovation hard and expensive.  you can say a lot about flash, but you cant deny it was the easiest way to start building cool shit.  got an idea for an iphone app? hope you have some money, cause if you want to find someone to build it, they’re going to charge you through the nose to do something you could have built in a weekend with flash and a case of beer.  Just my .02

If you are going to bash a phone, you should have reasons why. The Thunderbolt is the fastest on the market by a huge margin. Everyone in my family has one and not one has had any problems. Sounds like you should go to the store you bought it at and ask how to use it. Then you can proceed to exit the iPhone WAHHHmbulance.

I often get into arguments with coworkers who have the iPhone. Almost everyone in my crew has one. When I was deciding between iPhone and Thunderbolt, everyone said iPhone. I went with Thunderbolt instead. Do I think it was a mistake? Absolutely not. I couldn’t be happier. I picked the phone I thought was best for me. I love the screen size. The screen size is almost as big as the whole iPhone itself. It’s fast, and great for watching videos and movies. I once did a speed test against an iPhone in a 3G only area. My Thunderbolt was faster by a little over a second. Today is the date said for the Gingerbread update, if not, I still love this phone. Everyone has an iPhone. Be different.

looks like the leaked June 30th date is a bust as well! All I see are several months of “comin soon” that has amounted to me fighting a malfunctioning phone that I obviously paid way too much for……

Its funny hearing comments like the ones posted here. Pretty entertaining I must say, I have a tbolt. Mine works great. No updates or anything. I do my research, reading and listening, so I can figure out what I think is the best move for me. I had a bb for the longest lol, Apple or HTC was the answer in my opinion. Tbolt just like iPhone 4 will fade out, just like the first iPhone and any old HTC phone. Bottom line these discussions about these phones won’t matter a year from now. You like your phone? Then good for you, your suppose to, you bought it. You don’t like it, service, bugs or updates, then move on get something different. Otherwise, your just typing, venting to a computer screen. And I’m not trying to be mean, its just real talk.

Amen, happy with my Tbolt. Fortunately, no reboot issues here. Just bought a second one for my wife. Looking forward to seeing Gbread though.

Right me neither, gbread looks promising, guess it would be nice to feel like the phone is new again with a update. My girl has a EVO shift 4g from Sprint and 2.3 works well on there so will see what happens. I won’t download it right away though lol. Not until I see and read what’s going on with the update first.

Check for software updates under menu and settings. If there aren’t any… Your local Verizon store can upgrade HTC Sense for you to the last available version for the TB. They did it for me they day I bought it.

Just kidding… Point is… I do like my TB but I’d LOVE it if it didn’t reboot and the battery was better in 4G areas. We need these updates! If yours doesn’t reboot I’m happy for you but be considerate of those who have problems. I do have the phone management tools… But the apps are meant to enhance not patch or get by with. Those phones that aren’t rebooting probably didn’t get that Sence update… And some aren’t that tech savvy but still have legitimate gripes for the $$$ they pay / paid.

Spoke with a tech person at Verizon today and it appears that for some of us having the rebooting issues with the HTC thunderbolt will have to wait allittle longer for the update as it has been delayed

Chatted with an HTC rep earlier today, who after much prodding said that HTC has finished their end of the 2.3 update and checked it, but that the update will only be released as an OTA by Verizon (and won’t be available as a manual download from the HTC site).  HTC rep said that there is usually a 24-72 waiting period before the updates are pushed out.  HTC rep suggested checking with Verizon for news on 2.3 update, but also said to check the HTC site for news regarding the update.  Yeah, possibly more promises just to blow us off, but at least the time period is now more defined to the next 24-72 hours.  I’m just sharing what the HTC rep told me, so take this information whichever way you want.

If you are living in a city that gets LTE coverage then of course you are not going to have any problems, most people having problems live between areas where there phone bounce between 3G and LTE like mine does.  I still love the phone and noticed that it only reboots every now and then instead of 3 times a day like it use to months ago.  I’m trying my best to be patient with HTC and VZW because I’ve been a customer for years.  My only gripe after that update is the fact that it killed the reception that I use to get before I did the OTA update for the first time.  I thinks it’s funny how the HTC EVO/Sprint got the gingerbread OS update and not VERIZON considering the Thunderbolt is a newer phone.

What I don’t understand is how HTC can say that the Tbolt can’t support Sense 3.0 when the devs made it stable on rooted phones, and how we still don’t have Gingerbread when the Devs also have lots of those Roms…. BS that they won’t try!!!!!!!!

I phone does suck i just sold mine on ebay its so plain has not features so slow on my 3g network where i live. Nothing can be your own and you are imprisoned by apples laws you have no freedom. I will never buy another apple phone or ipad they are a piece of cheap technology that has good software but overall they are made cheap and sold for crazy price. The mac book is the only product i can see that actually is made to last i have seen some last ten years and as fast as new ones. On the other hand the thunderbolt rules period. If you want a phone that fast strong and looks great its for you. Hey yeah the battery is average but what smartphone lasts all day if they had one everybody would buy it and their would be no competition because we all know they could make better batteries easily. The thuderbolt is the phone to have its just as fast as the dual core phones and those new phones like the bionic look like crap its so funny to see people excited over a phone that looks like the windows kin or something on the cheap side. I easily can say after owning ipad and iphone that the thunderbolt replaces them and if you looking for a tablet always go 7in. Any bigger why not get a laptop they will never ever be replaced period. I have the samsung galaxy and htc evo tab i love them but the samsung is smooth and always works.

I love my Thunderbolt.  The only problem I had with it was battery life, which I fixed by buying a super cheap extended battery on ebay…  I no longer have to charge it multiple times a day, and usually can get away with not charging it at all during the day (unless I use it pretty heavily).  Sure the phone is a little fatter, but this is trumped by the fact that the battery life now rocks on it.  I have been very happy with my phone, and since I fixed the battery problem, I have friends that are upset that they got an iPhone and not a Thunderbolt.
