Did The Motorola Droid Bionic Just Get Closer to Launch?

Published

on

While we’re not positive about what we’re seeing here, a Motorola device with EVDO and LTE 700MHz radios, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a inductive charging battery cover just passed through the FCC today, a device that very well could be the one and only Motorola Droid Bionic.

Motorola Droid Bionic at FCC?

Now, if you look at this picture from the FCC, you’ll notice a form factor that is extremely similar to the Droid Bionic’s or at least the one that popped up just recently. Other than that similarity and those specifications, there is no other information that can confirm that this is in fact the Droid Bionic.

There is something interesting here though that pertains to a possible release. The user manual and photos of the device are under a confidentiality agreement until August 7th. Does that mean we won’t see this until August 7th? Probably not but it’s certainly a date to keep in mind.

So my friends, it appears that the Motorola Droid Bionic may have just gotten closer to release. How does that feel? It probably feels pretty good considering this absolutely, positively THE 4G LTE phone that you should be considering.

Thank you for providing a suspected release date based on solid evidence.

I agree it is nice to see some new news that has some foundation.  But just because they confidentially agreement expires August 7, doesn’t mean the phone will release that day.

This is for the author of this article and all of those who commented on article.  Did anyone not follow the link from this article to the FCC website?  If you read the confidentiality document, it was dated early april and asked for 180 day confidentiality agreement.  180 days from the 1st week of April would be October.  It did not mention August 7.

It’s kinda funny how the droid bionic was revealed in january with the motto “the end of waiting” and yes, we’re still waiting.

Hopefully, the wait will be worth it.  Sounds like a great device, but at 4.5 screen size, will it be too big?

pretty sure if you already have $29.99 unlimited plan and you’re upgrading you’re going to be able to keep it based on other released info, just not certain if it’s staying $29.99 hopefully it will and the release date won’t be august…1 bc i’m tired of waiting 2 the new iPhone is coming out in september ish and I don’t feel like getting that waved in my face at the store XP

if you have a smartphone and verizon wireless right now, then upgrading your phone to the droid bionic will not change your unlimited data plan. All verizon customers with the $30 unlimited will be grandfathered in.

      07/02/2011 at 7:36 am

yeah. IF you wanna pay full retail for the phone. Me, My 2 year deal is up and i want the discounted price for the phone (new every two).. so I’d have to sign a new contract, and LOSE my unlimited data. And if that’s the case– Goodbye Verizon!

      • Bfgsg

        07/02/2011 at 2:43 pm

You will still keep the unlimited, even if your upgrading your phone using a discount

          07/02/2011 at 9:21 pm

yeah, I understand that if you buy the phone and you have an unlimited data plan then you get to keep it. But when you upgrade with a new every 2 you get the discounted price because you sign a new 2 year contract, so you’re not keeping your same contract anymore. And nobody’s saying that if you go that way you get to keep your data plan…

I am sorry you have been misinformed by your source. But please check out Verizon’s official website, or just call *611 and talk to a representative. You can upgrade your phone after July 7th, and as long as you have been a customer with a $30 unlimited data, even if you sign a “new” two year contract with them to get the phone cheaper, it is considered the same account and you will not lose your unlimited data package; it will be grandfathered in. ^_^

I have Droid 1 with 50 dollar rebate still intact for the next upgrade. I signed up for the 30 dollar unlimited plan which was a must to get the phone.  Now I heard rumour about the grandfather clause for those current member with Data Smart phone even though there will be a transition data from 3G to 4G.  Now, I want to transfer responsibility account, it means that I will be the one who’s instead taking over the payment from the previous person which requires credit report of course.  Verizon said that I would lose my $50 dollar rebate if I choose to do so or I can get Droid Charge then I can do the change ownership with the grandfather clause.  This method is fine, but I prefer of holding on to Bionic or SGS 2. But I wasn’t clear about being grandfathered in if I do the transfer after July 7 of which I shall get droid Bionic and Unlimited 4G plan w/ $50 rebate.  Do you think verizon would give me hard time of keeping unlimited data if I decided to do this method?  Do you think verizon would make an excuse of saying that I should be counted as a new member?

    • Texan

      07/02/2011 at 4:14 am

I would do the transfer before July 7th to be on the safe side, but I don’t see why they wouldn’t let you keep the unlimited data if you decided to do the transfer after July 7th. It’s not like it’s a new account, the account you are taking over will already be active – before the 7th – so as long as that account as unlimited data, you should be good. I’d call verizon customer service just to be sure.

Man, I thought the Bionic was coming out sometime this month for sure…I guess I’ll just upgrade next month. I have a smartphone now w/ unlimited data, the fam is locked in now I’ll wait for the bionic as long as it takes. You can’t rush perfection :)

Don’t wait for the bionic with its potential melt downs, over priced data plan, and false promises.Do yourself the favor and go buy the samsung charge. If the bionic was not good enough on the first go around how can we expect that the new and improved version will out perform its ghost.

the droid charge is a joke the only good hardware it has is the super amoled plus screen the processors a joke compared to any dual core processor (including the exynos processor which was released on the galaxy s2 at the same as the charge) and its the ugliest phone i’ve ever seen

I see your concerns with the Bionic, but I guess we will all have to wait. Although, I wouldn’t say the Charge is a winning phone. My friend just bought it, and with 4G speed active he only gets about 1 hour and half while actively using the phone. With the 4G active and not using the phone it drains his battery in almost 4 hours. Under 3G speeds he gets about 2 and half hours of active use and without using his phone under 3G he gets about 6-8 hours depending on the temperature outside.

I’m waiting for the bionic. Think about it, the motor photon has 8meg can, dual core processor, 1gig ddr2 ram and 4g Ltd and there’s no secret about THAT phone so for motor to be so hush hush about the bionic it probably has KILLER specs!

Thanks for the insight texan….  I was thinking that way too you know just to be on the safe side.  I’ll go and double check it again with verizon after Independence day.  I also agree  some part with Bionic?  about the $180 Charge and Bionic false promises still not the Bionic melt down part.   This is what interest me the most as Verizon store offered 299/249 with 50 for a final of $249/$199.  I can easily get that price at Amazon tho sadly can’t use the 50 dollar rebate.  Costco seems cheaper, but I’m not a member :( .  Bionic will be much better and this is why I am salivating for it as it takes much time to perfecting it just like Original Droid was.  I am with alecgale that besides 4G , HDMI, Super Amoled screen and with facetime,  it basically sucks and not future proof.  I hate the fact that dual processors smartphone available so far are only for 3G. Dam Dem Basterds!!!  I’ll wait and see if in fact that Bionic will come out in August or SGS2 around mid July,  I’ll screw the 50 dollar rebate and be on the safe side as I can get them cheaper outside of Verizon anyway and I also be able to safe my bill as my workplace provide discount.  So “Winning..”

It shouldn’t matter one way or the other, Don.  If you are assuming responsibility of the line, you are also assuming responisbility of the plan and features.  Your NE2 credit will not transfer though, in that you have been told correclty.

It doesn’t matter if you wait or not…if you have a data plan now, whether it is VZW unlimited or an old Alltel plan, it’s yours to keep, and that won’t change unless you change it.

    Hi Adam,

    How are things?
To be honest, camera shooting capability of a camera is extremely important to me.  So, I will be waiting for reviews to come out on the Bionic’s camera picture quality/shooting capability.  (I never did get the Droid X, because of reported camera quality issues. )  Also, my hands are on the smaller side.  My nephew has a 4.5 in. Samsung and its keyboard is too spread out for me to easily use.  I need to wait and actually try the Bionic  out.  Not to be heretical here, but am also considering the Apple 5 (the major version update that is…. if it ever gets launched).  Improved camera is predicted to be in the works.  Only time will tell, which of these two phones will better suite me.

Thanks for your continuing your cell phone updates.  Take care.

I was told by rep in the Verizon store that if you upgrade to another smartphone that is 3g then you will be able to keep your unlimited plan, however if you upgrade from a 3g to a 4g phone that it will change your contract and you will be on the new tiered program.  The rep I talked to has been there a long time and I believe that he knows what he is talking about.

    • drew

      07/02/2011 at 2:15 pm

Verizon already tweeted that you and he are wrong. You can keep unlimited data when upgrading even from 3g to lte.

    • Weslycarrol

      07/02/2011 at 7:02 pm

This is not true at all Fitze. It may be time your rep looks for a new job, because he does not study it very well. I have already talked to 4 reps, two of which are supervisors due to a billing error, but during my wait on the phone I asked each representative how the the upgrading will work. They clearly explained the Unlimited Data packed we have now will be grandfathered in, and the package is the same for the 4G; all 3G and 4G customers with Unlimited Data prior to July 7th already use the same package. That means if you have a 3G phone only and it magically turned into a 4G phone with your current unlimited package on your 3G phone it would already receive the 4G signal as it is the same package. Hope that makes sense.

I check the news on the Bionic every single day, and have for months. I don’t know how much longer I can take it! I plan on waiting it out, but this is getting ridiculous :( I talked with a Verizon rep yesterday who still believed it to be vaporware because of all the problems, mind you it was his personal opinion and Motorola has said it was coming. According to my sister Costco has a 90 day refund policy for all electronics including cellphones.  She was told you can return the phone and get a new one at the new contract or upgrade price and keep your unlimited data plan.  Not that I doubt my sister but can anyone else verify this or is it an associate talking out his @ss?

Day 1-30 exchange for another phone at full subsidized price.

Day 31-90 exchange for the same phone only!

Had to go get a Droid charge yesterday to get locked into unlimited because I’m a new customer.

Costco also only taxes on the price you’re paying! Not the retail price of the phone. 203.24 for the phone out the door

Good to know.  I’ll have to head over there and upgrade my phone, I’ve been sitting on it since Feb.  Then again maybe Costco won’t get to sell it, I wonder if that’s a possibility.  Maybe I’ll wait til Tuesday to upgrade, give myself a little more leeway.

Is anyone really happy with the Samsung Charge?  I dont own one, but have used one, and it seems fast. The downside to the Bionic is it will be even BIGGER, and although you can never argue about having more power, I wont need that dual core, so wont it eat up the battery faster?  The Charge is so so light also, lighter than my 2 1/2 year old droid w/ 3.5″ screen.  I’m tired of waiting, don’t you think the Charge is a good phone if you are happy with the performance, overall looks and size?

      07/02/2011 at 6:03 pm

I bought the Charge and had it for about a week before I took it back and exchanged it for the Thunderbolt.  First couple of days I owned it, I like it but pretty soon after that I started to have issues with it.  Pretty much all my favorite apps stopped working.  I could not use Google Music, HBOGO, Pandora, Slacker, or Vevo.  The only streaming app I was able to use was TuneIn radio.  I understand sometimes it’s an issue with the apps but there was too many apps not working on this phone for me to enjoy it.  I am not sure if it was the processor or lack of RAM ( or combination of both) but couple days after I bought it I started to notice lag.  One thing I hate the most is when I am using an app and then I press the home button and it goes to the home screen but I do not see my apps or widgets for about a second or two.

I’ve had the Thunderbolt for about a week now and I have to say I am happy I made the change.  The battery is definitely its weakest point but if you tweak with the settings you can get a full day out of it.  The only other thing I miss about the Charge is the display.  I can definitely notice more glare on the Thunderbolt screen.  The quality built of  the TB is night and day over the Charge.

If you want to be safe and lock in unlimited data with Verizon, I would recommend going with the Thunderbolt.

This is my second day with this phone and I’ve yet to find any issues with it. Hopefully I don’t run into the same problem as DB. I came from an epic 4g. The screen, cameras, and network are a nice upgrade for me. I bought this phone as a transition phone to get either the bionic or gsII, but if it doesn’t play out in my favor I wouldn’t mind being stuck with this phone at all.

Of course, I’ve only had this phone for two days …

I have the Charge, and really like it. Light, fits in pocket fine (so bionic size doesn’t scare me), screen and video perfect, plenty fast (for the most part)…Coming from a Bbry was intially not happy with the battery life. Very careful about turning everything off unless i need it (data, gps, goog location, wifi..) now and battery life is pretty good..charge it every night. And, have chargers at work and in car, of course. I have found it to be a little buggy and sluggish at times. Currently, I am unable to do any IM service. Will try the samsung live chat (first). They are not good, by the way. And, then Verizon..But, overall the phone is great. Have 17 days to exchange for another phone and if the bionic isn’t available, am considering getting the iphone 4 (and sacrificing 4G/LTE)..just depends on how sluggish this is, and if any more issues arise in the next couple weeks. As I understand dual-core, it will use the battery more efficiently. And just have to believe the bionic will be much better (maybe I’m wrong)..If you want some more opinions on the Charge, check out comments on verizon, amazon, and cnet.

The current unlimited plan ends on July 7th and goes to a tiered structure.  As posted before, releasing the Bionic on August 8th would keep people (new to Verizon) from buying a phone now with the unlimited data package, than turn around and return the phone for the Bionic (there is a 30 day return policy).  Strategic bunsiness move -yes.  Does it piss off customers – hell yea.

Thank you for all the comments.  I am so tired of my original droid, so terribly slow, but I am grandfathered in on the data plan so my only time concern is to get rid of this laggy phone that I depend on for work.  From your comments it seems the Charge does what my does…hit the home screen and wait for icons.  My Droid rarely crashes so I would really be bummed to get a fancy new phone and not even be able to run what I have on my droid like Netflix, scanner radio, Pandora, pocket cloud, call blocker, angry birds, flext9 Text input, Tango, small apps for work, and all the google stuff from latitude, voice, sky maps, goggles, etc.  So you think if I put at minimum the apps I listed I might make the Charge sluggish?  Glad I didn’t stop at Costco on my way home :)

    • Craiglists2008

      07/02/2011 at 10:54 pm

Well any phones would be sluggish with that kind of demands. My droid is still on par with my brother’s global 2. What I meant was that if things are sluggish then both are the same. This is why I can wait for so long without upgrading, as droid is the “success” Motorola achievement. While my brother was so relieved compare to his BB Storm, and can finally get the expensive data worth. Of course my droid is no longer stock :) and have over 100 apps with 40 MB left.

    • DB

      07/03/2011 at 1:07 am

From my experience the Charge could not handle those kind of demands. What surprised me the most was that it only took couple of days to notice the sluggishness. On the other hand, the Thunderbolt has been able to handle the same demands and I have not noticed even a slow down, although it’s only been about a week. It’s great to play a game like Texas hold ’em live or rockband and as soon as you exit, you’re able to see all the icons and widgets. With that said, there are couple of issues that will hopefully go away soon with the gingerbread update. Most notably the random reboot. Within a week, it’s happened twice, once while on a phone call and another time while using an application.

If I pay month by month (I am out of contract as I provided my own Droid OG) and have unlimited data package, would I need to do a 1-2 year contract before July 7th to get grandfathered in? I want to wait for Bionic before I do 2 yr contract, to get discount on it… But maybe I don’t have that option without losing unlimited data…?

    Thx

Thanks for update.  Question from disappointed ATT user in MD.  Been wanting to switch over to Big Red and fewer dropped calls since March and was going with Bionic.  During the wait my existing phone cratered and needed an interim throw down and just assumed switch to VZ and get Bionic.  Well now my decision seems to a data plan not phone decision. Couple that with I have yet to get 1 year out of phone without a replacement as quality seems to be real concern and with the SmartPhones at 3 Bills it is a real concern.
    1. How limiting is single 1Ghz processor vs waiting for dual core?  Really?
    2. For that matter, 3G vs 4G as a Droid X2 seems like high value purchase for next year of service.
    3. Realizing we always want more, will the 2G data be sufficient and no need to lock in unlimited data? Which I am sure price will edge up in time..
    4.  Finally, if “lock in now” is decision I think Samsung Charge looks like best on market but have read where  “The robotic voice quality concerns me a bit” especially since I use phone a bunch for business teleconference calls. Is this true?

Note no rumors of Droid 3 or Bionic launch packs so it seems like we are at least half a month out and suspect Droid 3 is at at least a month ahead of Bionic.

      – Dual core should be a huge improvement and its future proof of course, but I suspect that it is just like a PC that the softwares should support the extra cpu/gpu in order for users to feel any speed improvements.  If the dual core processors are not picking up in the market, then more than likely software developers would stick to a single processing applications.

      – I do like 4G for the fact that Droid  does Flash and OMG how it pounds iPhone atm.  I also do understand that 4G is very limited that more than often we would use 3G connection, but the price is the same so can’t complain much.  Droid X2 looks superb atm and you are correct, but without 4G all user can do is to use Wifi at Home in order to watch anything else besides emails or news browsings.  Also, Droid X2 doesn’t have a facetime and amoled screen.

      – It is all about size portion of a human being really.  Its like the kids are being fed a single slice of pizza for many years. Now because of other things happening that’s unexplainable, the kids are being fed a half a slice of pizza.  Of course they are begrudgingly feel hungry for more or at least can’t do much activities or they’ll be hungry sooner and asking what the heck is going on!!  This is an era just like a hard drive where everything is going to be nicer and requires huge datas.  Now they are saying screw you, but just care about our money as it is mandatory too.

I bought a phone on amazon wireless last Friday, and it’s arriving this Thursday which is the 7th. Will I be under the unlimited plan or will they put me in their new plan? If I am on their new plan, I’m going to complain and possibly say I’m contractually bound by amazon wireless.

I really enjoyed reading all of the comments posted in here. The bottom line for me is this. I like many others have been waiting on the bionic. However, usually when something is hyped up beyond belief it seldom delivers. There is currently no dual core phone on the market that doesn’t have issues with the battery. That being said, I purchased the Droid Charge. I could not be happier. The Thunderbolt wasn’t even a consideration with its horrid Battery life. I went with the phone whose bootloader was unlocked. Is blazing fast with Go Launcher not to mention Dev support by way of Gummy Charged and Altered Beast. They recently released a leaked de-bloated Gingerbread. The weight and features of the Charge more than meet my needs. No matter how you slice it, there will always be a phone that beats a current phone. It’s the nature of the beast. If you are on the fence about getting a Charge, just know that its getting Quadrant scores of 1600 with a root process that is not that difficult since it is unlocked. Hope this helps.

Thanks Don C for your quick reply.  You are right, any phone would be pushed to the edge with a ton of heavy apps multitasking.
So putting aside the data plans and such, I just want to verify that the main reason to hold out for the Bionic is the dual core processor.  I’m all about performance, so I may just wait, but it is so temping to drive a few miles to Costco and pick up a Samsung Charge.  As Ecko524 explained, if the Charge does bother you in performance, you are not stuck.  You can unlock, just as I did with my droid.  Once unlocked I had an entire world of stuff I could do to my phone.  All I was interested in was performance, so all I did was bump up the speed of the processor.  Surprisingly, the battery did not suffer as much as I thought.  With the widget, I can monitor battery temp. and shut things down if it gets to crazy.  Just wanted to thank everyone again for the comments….I think I am leaning towards the Charge, as I have been disappointed to many times by all the hype of a new phone coming (who knows when??).   I am starting to wonder why I am using this 2 1/2 year old phone when there is a much better phone ready to go.  At the least I am sure the Charge will be an upgrade to what I have, and for 2 hundred bucks out the door, pretty cheap as well.

Question: Costco confirmed with me that they do not use the NE2 program.  Does this mean I can still use the NE2 for another phone?  Or do you think Verizon wont do anything since they will have me already sucked into a new 2 yr agreement?

Motorola originally said the Bionic would be released in July originally, right? So they aren’t late yet!
