Motorola Confirms Rugged Defy+ Smartphone Not Coming to U.S.

After speculations that the leaked Defy+ smartphone, an upgraded model of the T-Mobile Defy, would hit U.S. carrier AT&T, Motorola had revealed in its earnings call that the Android smartphone aimed at those with an active lifestyle would not hit the U.S. market. The company confirmed the existence of the Defy+ and says that it would be available in other markets.

Given that the phone may contain wireless mobile broadband radios that are compatible with AT&T’s 3G and 4G HSPA+ networks in the U.S., consumers who really want the Defy+ could import an unlocked model if they desire. The phone is said to carry the same features as the original Motorola Defy for T-Mobile, but with a slightly upgraded processor.

As a reason for not releasing the phone for the U.S. market, Motorola cites that the phone hasn’t performed as well as it had hoped in the U.S. market.

Apparently Motorola were asking the wrong people in the US.  Office people won’t want this phone, but ask any construction worker, lifeguard, mover, etc. who does physical work or works outside.  Everyone of them would want this phone over the delicate pieces of —- that are all that is available in the US.

Right now the availability of any rugged smartphone is very limited to maybe the Casio Cammando, which has mixed reviews, is not 4G.  I cannot find any info to whether or not the next version will be 4G.  I really need a rugged phone due to my work environment where it might get wet, or bumped or dropped.  Hard to imagine that all the carriers in the US refuse to offer much in the way of choice.  No Defy either!
