Droid X Gingerbread Issues Getting Fixed in Mid-August?

Published

on

Back in May, the Motorola Droid X Gingerbread update started to roll out to excited owners across the United States. Soon after though, that excitement faded as many Droid X owners started having problems with their device. Some even had the update brick their phone. The update was so bad, that it caused Motorola and Verizon to postpone the update to the other Droid devices.

Droid X

Well, ever since then, owners have been dealing with an assortment of bugs that were brought along with the software and until today, no cure was in sight. Turns out, Motorola and Verizon are in fact hard at work on an update and it appears, according to a post on Verizon’s forums, that an update intended to fix these bugs could be on its way in the middle of this month.

The post refers to an MR6 update that will be arriving at some point in mid-August. Nothing official yet so there is always a chance that this might change but for now, cross your fingers that what you read below is correct:

We have forwarded your information to Motorola. They were able to duplicate the issue on their end.

As of 7/29/11 we have learned that it will be corrected with MR6 update. At this point, a target release date for this update is mid-August.

As soon as more information becomes available, we will be sure to post it here.

In the interim, if are turning the device off to avoid notification tones during your slumber, you may want to put the device on silent until we get the resolution.

This is also a good sign that things might be heading in the right direction in regards to the Droid 2, Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro Gingerbread updates as well. Any Droid X owners still suffering from major problems brought on by the Gingerbread update?

None of the problems were ever fixed. Putting together a collection of problems that I have as well as some of my co-workers, here they are:
-Occasional loss of 3G that can only be fixed with a reboot
-Wifi works for about a minute, and can only be revived by turning off and back on
    -Random reboots
-Multitouch keyboard becomes extremely laggy (there is a temporary fix for this, by clearing the “multi-touch keyboard” application memory, but this has to be done every day or so)
-Battery life is horrible (Battery itself is fine as the battery life was much better when phone has froyo)

Pretty much a summary of the biggest problems. I’m really hoping this update will come out, it will save me from getting a refurb phone!

I had the occasional loss of 3G and random reboots too, and I got them fixed about a month ago by calling Verizon and they did some sort of restore from their end on my phone. Haven’t had those issues since.

I never did experience the problems I am reading about and a friend told me about the new update on Friday, August 19, 2011.  When I got home, I updated my phone and I absolutely love the new contrasting colors and many other features that I am still discovering. The phone remembers text patterns and offers to add them.  LOVE it.  Do you upgrade now.

I hated my upgrade.  It totally changed the appearance and a lot of the intuitive functions in menus disappeared , it appears as though they went from “Windows 7” to “Windows 95”.  I have seen absolutely no useful changes to my phone just forced to relearn what was an excellent interface to begin with.  Has anyone notived that watching videos in the gallery you can no longer switch videos with the flick of a finger you have to “back button” once and then swipe…….a seemingly absolutely pointless update that is also a step back in user friendly intuition .

I’ve had nothing but headaches since the update in June/July had to go back to factory default…got the latest update a few days ago, thought everything was going to go well and then back to the same problems…keyboard goes crazy!!! Can’t text, the letters will not show in text box or the letters will get stuck and type on their own and i have to power off the phone just to get the letter to stop repeating itself… loss of 3G, etc…been on the phone with tech support, back to factory default again, so this latest upgrade did not fix any the problems i had before.  So, Verizon told me that i would have to get a ‘refurb’ or get another phone all together, since i can no longer update the phone, according to tech, my phone will eventually become obsolete!!! So frustrating!!!!!

Im having all those same problems plus the widget wont load so I have no date on my home s seen when using my mind ell and I’ve gotten use to the date right there. PLUS I hate the keyboard taking the whole screen now and to see what your typing is either just the top of the row your typing or not on the screen at all. I hope they fix this soon as I can’t stand it. It’s enough to make you want to go elsewhere!

Ha, Ill believe it when I see it.  I wound up sbf’ing my X back to Froyo after Verizon told me “Youre just going to have to deal with it until the new update comes out later in the year.”

I have major keyboard lag. The keyboard drops away while typing all the time. The calendar does not notify me op appointments. I have radio problems a few times a day. And my battery life sucks. My 2.2 was replaced under warranty by VZW. WITH a DROID x with the new 2.3 GB. it is unexceptable that they replace one problem with uneven bigger one. I was told by VZW that gb just douse not work with the single core on the X. Gb wasdedigned for the dual core x2. I don’t know if that is true as I get lied to often by their customer service. They have mailed me another replacement

I too, am really frustrated!!! I pay over $200 monthly and depend on my droid for my business. Since the upgrade to “gingerbread” (I call it gingerpuke). My keyboard freezes on punctuation, battery life is degraded by orders of magnitude and email notification is spotty at best!!!!

How does one go back to froyo??

I loved my Droid X til 2.3 arrived. Music app would only let me hear exactly 5 minutes of music before phone would reboot. The keyboard constantly froze or went away. Some apps, including Netflix, Amazon Music Store, Music, Browser, and others force closed repeatedly. Battery life was supposed to be increased, but instead decreased. 3G works fine until 1X is discovered, from which a reboot is required to get 3G back. WiFi works fine until it says “Connection lost”, though 2 or more WiFi bars are still there. I told Verizon of my issues and they worked with me and sent me a replacement device. The only problems I am having with the new device is lag. I believe the OTA had something to do with bugs. I received a device already tested with the update from Verizon. So far so ok. Not great. Bug fixes would be nice as soon as possible.

I’ll believe it when I see it – I’m having constant problems with my camera and images….at times I have to reboot the phone just to get into the gallery and see pictures, or in most cases it won’t show me the image. Not to mention, the image turns out to be several MB large, rather than the previous pictures on Froyo being just a few hundred KB big….in my opinion, nothing changed with the phone other than polishing the icons

  6. Chris

    08/06/2011 at 12:00 pm

The loss of 3G that can only be fixed by reboot is a loss of all phone signals. You can’t make or receive calls (or texts) until the phone is restarted.

  7. Chipdaddy

Add to that list that Idann provided:
-Random lock-ups along with the random reboots
-Telling me that an application isn’t installed when using the recent app menu, when the app is in fact is installed.
-Completely corrupting all data on the included 16GB SDHC card (wife’s phone only)
-poor Swype performance and horrible word prediction

And those are the issues that both my wife and I are having with our DX’s since the 2.3 upgrade.  I’ve done hard resets numerous times and that only seems to buy me a day of troublefree use.  I’m hoping to head to the Verizon store today to see what they can do. My guess is nothing, but who knows.

-problems with my contacts, including texts not identifying names, google nav telling me I have no addresses in my contacts
-my outgoing emails through AOL are getting stuck in the outbox, because it doesn’t recognize authorization

I got the GB update a week after I got my Droid X. It too randomly shuts off and on. I have also noticed that my 3G signal shuts down from time to time and when it turns back on, my phone goes crazy with messages. As for the battery, my battery life went from worse to better. If I were you, I would go into the settings and change some things to improve the life. The one thing that made me mad is when GB updated my phone, it fried my micro SD card. I guess it is good to know that I am not the only one having issues and I refuse to pay $85 to get the X2 as Verizon no longer gives refurb X units under warranty or insurance.

went into vz store a month ago complaining about internet being very very slow. This was the same on my gf’s dx also. They did the gb update and wiped each of our phones. my gf’s phone(which was only 3 months old) instantly went nuts. Locking up, key board disappearing, etc etc. Vz said they would send her a refurb….for a 3 month old phone. and now mine is shot. key board locking up, phone locking up when txting, calling wrong #’s. Come on vz step up here and do something. I have had service w/u for long time. Own a business and have multiply smart phone lines….don’t tell me I have to live with it….I don’t, AT&T has I phone too, and as good are better service in my area……when you have a business it’s not if you are going to have problems, it’s how you handle those problems that sets us apart and keeps customers loyal….

Droid X after 2.3 gingerbread update

    1. Battery got worse than it was, and it wasn’t great.
    2. Random self reboot.
    3. Buttons light up on and off.
    4. 3G signal and wi-fi got worse.
    5. Texting and speech-to-text is buggy.

    Droid X2 with 2.3 gingerbread

    Better battery life
    better receprion
    moves smoother(of course, dual processor)

    Conclusion:

    1. Should we all get a free replacement of X2
    2. Wait for an update that may or may not resolve above mentioned issues
    3. Keep calling Verizon or visiting the store to get hard reset(seem like the only fix that they know)

I too loved my Droid X until the gingerbread update.  Since then this phone has more bugs than a Florida swamp.  If they dont fix it soon.  I will leave Verizon and get an iPhone with AT&T.
My favorite new feature…LOL….is the multiple chat conversations that open up between me and the same person.  HEY MOTOROLLA – VERIZON…FIX THIS ASAP PLEASE.

My Droid X has been causing me nothing but problems since Gingerbread.  The biggest problems I have are:

    1. Battery life – I am a heavy txter, so I have to recharge my phone 2-3 times during the course of the day, and even on days I have minimal usage the battery is usually near dead within 6 hours.  And forget about trying to run like a game app…
    2. Button lights like to work randomly
    3. The sync icon is up next to the signal even when the toggle key is off
    4. My Calendar isn’t syncing with my google calendar, and I’m getting gmail notifications at random for new mail I got weeks ago.
    5. My wallpaper will at times randomly revert back to the default silver X
    6. Have had some issues at times where it wouldn’t recognize the SD card
    7. Random lockup and restarts

I am having some problems as well. I didnt even realize i had the same problems as you guys until i read this article.
i had the gb update for a month or so before it started going haywire. My keyboard constantly locks up when im texting or when im using it at all. it actually got so bad at one point that i factory reset my phone.the phone reboots randomly.when i take a picture or video sometimes i cant even view it.sometimes the camera doesnt even open and then my phone resets.i loved my phone up until about a month ago when the keyboard started locking up on me. i still do love it and think its the best one that verizon is offering.. i guess i really should have just waited for the droid x2.

I hate gingerbread and Verizon is lucky I havent had to call 911 My phone will not make calls out it acts as it calls then it disconnects as my wife and I were haveing a baby this last week I couldnt call my family to let them know, WTF. Verizon I expect better than this from a company of your standard.

p.s I would rather be with sprint than have a phone and company of this nature when and where you need help they tell you to climb a tree.

My wife and I are having similar issues as well. Our phones randomly lock up on us. They randomly reset on us. Our lights on our buttons randomly work off and on. There are certain contacts that her phone just will not let her text them for whatever reason. Apps crash more often. We lose 3g signal once it finds 1x you have to reset it to get it back. My phone displays both my home wifi and 3g icons together at the top of screen sometimes one or other is blue while other is color white. If our phones freeze we take our battery out to fix. I have insurance on these. Does anyone know if Verizon will exchange these phones for the droid x2 and for how much since we do have insurance. Assuming the x2 runs smoother with the dual core processor.

I just did the latest update to fix the GB issues.. Well see how it goes.. I had almost all the problems listed above. Most we’re intolerable, the worst thing to happen was when it corrupted my SD card and I lost 700 pictures and over two gigs of music. Very unhappy to say the least.

    08/16/2011 at 7:32 pm

Still have a few of the same issues, it’s already randomly rebooted twice, still dropping 3G and Wifi, still poor Swype performance.  I don’t know what they did with Swype, but the prediction and word choice is horrible since 2.3.x.  Looks like I’m heading to VZW this weekend.  It’s rediculous that I’ve had my phone less than a year, it’s had to be updated twice, and it still isn’t working like it should.  Don’t get me wrong, I like what the Android platform stands for and is, but it’s time like these that I miss my antiquated Blackberry.  It may have been running a 4 year old OS, but it was a rock solid OS.

After the GB install my Droid X was not the phone I grew to depend on. Keyboard lags and freezes,at night when plugged into the dock the led lights come on and light up the room.Phone will not dial out randomly.
I WAS a happy Droid user.I took time out of my day to go to the local Verizon store were I purchased the phone and they tried but could not resolve even one of the issues.I will stay with Verizon but dump the Droid X as soon as the iPhone 5 is available.

    08/20/2011 at 11:43 am

Unfortunately, my X started acting fruity after the update… the update was forced onmy phone… i kept deferring it, until I accidentally hit the ‘accept’ key picking up the phone, and it started the update.
Here’s my laundry list of issues:

Keyboard lags, drops out, hangs… clearing data will fix it (very) temporarily.

3G dies out, leaving the phone running in 1X. – switching to airplane mode for a minute or two will straighten it out temporarily as long as 3G is available.

Since the update, several applications that use text, like facebook, the browser, and quickoffice, have problems with the text window not scrolling up after a couple lines of text, so you can’t see what’s being typed. – haven’t found a workaround or band-aid for this issue

Battery life seems to be affected… I changed nothing except the OS update.. the apps that were running on Froyo were the same ones running on Gingerbread, but the battery seems to drain faster after the update.

Overall, the update seems to have more pluses than minuses… but bug fixes need to be put on priority. Telling customers to “deal with it” is NOT a fix.

    • TheGMan

      08/20/2011 at 11:58 am

      Almost forgot…

Data corruption is a serious problem… pictures seem to be hit the worst. Take a photo, look at it, it’s fine. Turn the phone on later & look at it… the thumbnail looks ok, but the photo will have lines and garbage it, or it’ll show up fine for a second, then will change to the “unknown file” triangle symbol.

I really loved this phone until the update… I still LIKE it, but not as much as I used to… having to deal with multiple issues over and overover tends to getthe really old, really fast.

There needs to be a way to KILL an update message, not defer it, so ‘tech savvy’ individuals can decide what will be installed and not installed. I went online and checked on what the new update was.. I saw there were some issues with it, and decided not to install it…. but all I could do is defer the update for 8-12 hours over and over, there was no way to cancel it from updating. I’d still be running Froyo if it was my choice.

    08/22/2011 at 5:05 am

    Two things:
    1. I had almost every one of the issues listed by others here. Very annoying. Finally took it a local Verizon store and the 2 employees there both had droid X phones with similar problems. They suggested doing a hard reset AFTER doing the update. I was hesitant as that sounded like something they would say because they had no real answers for me. Didn’t have anything to lose so tried it. 90% of my problems that I had are now fixed. If you want to try it:
A: power down and remove your SD card first or at least backup anything you can. This will wipe any personal info from the phone!
B: you will need to reactivate the phone (*228) as well as reenter your google account and other account info as if it is a new phone! know your passwords.
For me this fixed ALL phone/data connection issues, not receiving MMS messages, flash not flashing, calendar reminders not showing up in a timely fashion, etc. Go to Settings/Privacy/Factory Data Reset/Reset Phone/Erase Everything.

2.Those complaining of losing 5000 pictures of your new baby and every song you ever purchased (or didn’t purchase)… Have you never owned a computer? Do you not backup important documents? Do you have a digital camera? Do you leave all your pictures on the camera? Or do you BACKUP? If you can’t take steps to protect the things that are important to you then you have no one to blame but yourself. Electronics go bad. Power surges happen (even in low power devices like phones and cameras). Memory cards can get bad sectors just like hard drives in computers can. BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!

Hi Shawn, I just read this post and I was wondering… I’m about to get a Droid X in a couple of days. Will it come with Android 2.3, and if not, then how can I download it (I know the update came in May so I’m wondering if i can still download the gingerbread update!). Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

      09/01/2011 at 1:16 am

That is true, I have owned a computer since my first phone, and I couldn’t tell you how much backing up my stuff to another hard drive saved my butt. And especially a very technical piece like the Droid X, no one should have one without knowing the responsibilities of having a data(Smart Phone){Android} phone and like you said BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!

Unfortunately Shawn, I did the same things you mentioned.  I thought
the hard reset AFTER the update would work as well, but it didn’t.  Neither on my nor my wife’s phone. So I did a second hard reset, again no dice. I still lose 3G, Wifi is still hit
or miss, the camera still takes black/blank photos, the phone randomly reboots when docking, randomly turns itself back on after powering down, it’s just a mess.  I see on Verizon’s support website for the X that a software update is coming soon.  What I’m not sure of is, is this a NEW update, or are they just slow on updating their website and this is the MR6 update that hasn’t done squat?

Has anyone else encountered my problem?  I don’t see any reference to it above.  I forward lots of emails.  With 2.2, I would touch the To box and all my contacts would drop down so that I could choose which contacts to forward the email to.  Now with 2.3, no Contacts drop down box.  You have to enter the first few letters of the name.  Each name.  Very annoying, time consuming, and easy to forget a few contacts you meant to include.  What is so strange is that the Incredible still has a drop down box with Contact names, as does the new Verizon iphone 4.  How can this possibly be an improvement.  Any ideas?

I got the newest update and it turned my phone into a piece of crap :(
It freezes, i touch buttons like a name to call someone or my wifi tab and i have to touch it 5-8 times to get it to actually work, i receive text messages in 3’s (same text message 3 times in a row, my battery life seems worse, i try to type and nothing appears i have to back out of the program and restart it to type (problem with text messages and internet)
I want my old phone back the way it was.

Even with a new updated gingerbread update, I am still having problems with my phone and cannot switch back to any other profile. ‘: /

Really disappointed in the update.  Wouldn’t a patch for issues make more sense than a completely new OS!  I don’t think anybody asked for every menu to have to be relearned, the annoying new face book feature that is about as fun as swallowing glass, you can’t swipe to change videos anymore you have to back button then swipe (real handy geniuses.)  In my opinion they didn’t need to change the look and I saw no problems with my phone as Froyo…….why why why did they have to fix something that it seems a lot of people didn’t see as broke.  I can honestly say the ONLY thing I like is in the notifications boxes they give you the little button on the left to close the notification…..so you don’t have to open a app to remove it from the notifications page, that was an excellent idea the rest of it is absolute unasked or called for rubbish! I want my FROYO BACK!   OH YAH and they way all the menus changed in contacts for adding, editing, and linking is RETARDED no intuition anymore!!!!!!!!!!!

My DROID X updated on Oct. 1st. When it was done it started sending emails with pictures from my phone, thank god I don’t have any questionable pictures on there because the emails were sent to a work email address. I use to love my droid x phone but it truly sucks now. Texting is incredibly slow, it is slow at everything. It shuts itself off 3 or 4 times a day, inserts random words while texting or typing. Drops calls and makes random calls.
Verizon told me that it would work itself out to just be patient. BS! We paid a pretty penny for this smartphone and it should work like it is suppose to.

It is AMAZING! Quick and clean cut. Just an over-all beautiful update!
