HTC ThunderBolt Gingerbread Update Slated for Q3

Published

on

The reboot problem on the HTC ThunderBolt  has come and gone but there are still some issues that remain, issues that ThunderBolt owners are hoping will get fixed with a Android 2.3 roll out, one that we thought was going to be taking place at some point in Q2 and more specifically on June 30th.

Obviously, neither of those things happened and we’re now mid-way through Q3. Fortunately, it appears that HTC has given reps the go-ahead to confirm a Q3 release date for Gingerbread to ThunderBolt owners which means that we should see it roll out at some point within the next 8 weeks. Q3 includes both August and September.

A reader over at Droid-Life has confirmed a conversation with an HTC rep that included this juicy little response:

…We will certainly pass along your concerns to the developers at HTC. We are working hard to address the issues you have mentioned with future updates for the device. We are excited to announce that the HTC Thunderbolt will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q3 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability…

Nothing is set in stone and I don’t blame you for being weary but I am leaning toward believing the rep. That being said, HTC and Verizon already missed one target date so if this were to slip to Q4, I wouldn’t be surprised. Still, it’s obvious that the reboots are at least one reason why this update hasn’t rolled out quite yet and now that those are taken care of, you better believe the companies are moving full steam ahead on Gingerbread.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t bring the amount of bugs that the Droid X Gingerbread update brought with it.

Screw the Update. The day the HTC Vigor is released im gonna trash this phone and get the Vigor. SO Done. By the time they get the TB current it will be far behind the rest in specs. And the Vigor will be new, current and an animal…..

EVO 4G had issues with their Gingerbread update too. I prefer the slower updates that are stable rather than rushing to put out the latest update.

Q3? Yeah, right. Fool me once, shame in you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Hey Sccarlin…you have it wrong.  It’s “Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice…shame on you again!

No it’s, “Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice… (long pause)… We won’t get fooled again.”

Yeah.  These times are much better.  Who doesn’t love high unemployment and a complete loss of confidence in a market holding many people’s retirement funds?

The phone is great after the last update and my area got 4G LTE on July 21st so I’m not as anxious for GB.  The only thing it will really bring to the table is the Skype video chat which has become available except for the front facing camera which needs 2.3.4 for some reason.  Maybe the battery will be a bit better but overall the rest of the gains are just nominal since just about everything out these days is compatible with 2.2.

This phone (HTC Thunderbolt) has been one disappointment after another. First the insufferable delays in the release, then the abysmal battery life, a WiFi Hotspot that’s pretty much unusable (can’t stay connected for more than 10 minutes at a time), the lack of Skype w/ Video (which, when it finally arrived can’t use the front camera due to lack of Android 2.3. That was an *especially* nice touch), then more intolerable delays for Android 2.3.x.  And now I learn that the Vigor, the ‘replacement’ is due out this year? This is my reward for being an early adopter?

    Thanks for nothing HTC/Verizon

I’m not sure what the big deal is on Ginberbread.  I had it on my Droid X, and it definitely improved its performance and added a few nice features.  On the other hand, I now have an HTC Thunderbolt, with Froyo, and it works perfectly well.  I like the HTC interface much better than Motoblur.  4G is great, and I’m not sure why I will like this phone any better with Gingerbread as it suits my needs very well.  The phone is hard on batteries, so I bought a 2700 mah extended capacity battery.  I have no battery issues, even with heavy use all day.  I don’t watch movies, and don’t play video games.  Those who need the latest and greatest of everything and go into a depression if someone else has something “cooler” will be miserable no matter what.

Obviously the HTC vigor isn’t gonna have that good of specs. Do you not remember what happened with the thunderbolt rumors. The HTC thunderbolt will have a dual core 1 Ghz processor , a 1080p hd 8mp back facing camera, and a qhd display. Now, did we have any of that? No. Now just insert that dumb fool me once saying in for the vigor
