4.8-Inch Hybrid Iconia Smart Smartphone-Tablet Gets September Ship Date

Acer has finally revealed that it will begin shipping its hybrid smartphone-tablet Android-powered Iconia Smart beginning in September, though specific regional launch dates and pricing are unavailable. The smartphone was seen at the FCC and is expected to come to North America, but Acer has not disclosed any information for a U.S. launch yet, and it’s also uncertain if the U.S. will see the Iconia Smart shipping in September or will have to wait until a later date.

The smartphone bears a rather long 4.8-inch display, and is in the same hybrid mobile computing class as Dell’s 5-inch Streak, which straddles the line between phone and ultra-mobile tablet. The Streak, which has a WVGA resolution on its 5-inch screen, will be bested by a more widescreen 1024 X 480 resolution on the Iconia Smart. The Iconia Smart’s resolution is interesting as it marries the 1024 pixels found on high-end 7-inch tablets on the long side, and the 480 pixels on traditional WVGA screens on the shorter length.

The Iconia Smart’s resolution would have been compelling had the device launched sooner. However, given the delays of the smartphone, qHD resolution has taken over, which provides a resolution of 960 X 540 pixels.

The Iconia Smart will utilize a single-core 1 GHz processor that will power Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It will have an 8-megapixel rear camera as well as a front-facing camera for video calls.

The company’s German division posted that the device is expected to retail for €499 on Facebook. That’s about 700 USD.
