Galaxy Xcover Goes Rugged

In announcing that Samsung isn’t afraid to get down and dirty with its premium Galaxy smartphones, Samsung Germany has announced a rugged Android Galaxy Xcover smartphone that isn’t afraid of dirt, dust, and water. Joining the ranks of Motorola with its Defy smartphone and Casio’s Android equipped rugged offering for Verizon Wireless, Samsung is leveraging its Galaxy brand in delivering the company’s first IP67 certified handset that will handle the weather and the elements just fine with its covered ports, strengthened glass display, and waterproof casing.

The Xcover will also perform as a fully functional Android smartphone. Its rugged build means that the device can last in up to 3 feet of water.┬áMigrating from capacitive touch buttons to hardware buttons to make access to the phone easier when you’ve got grime on your fingers, the device is also powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The phone has a 3.6-inch display, though the company didn’t disclose what resolution that screen sports, along with support for HSPA 7.2 Mbps networks, WiFi, and a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash.

The Galaxy Xcover is expected to be available in Germany in October, though pricing isn’t yet known. It’s also unclear if the device will also launch in other countries outside of Germany.
