Samsung Claims Leaked Ice Cream Sandwich Phone With 720p HD Display is a Fake

Yesterday, a number of blogs have reported a slew of leaked Samsung Android smartphones and tablets. Thanks to some investigation by our own Adam Mills, we have discovered that the leaks are not accurate.

In a rare instance of public relations, it seems that Samsung has gone out on record to confirm that these devices, as they were leaked, are in fact not true or accurate. The confirmation is an anomaly as companies usually do not comment on speculations or leaks, but the fact that Samsung has decided to address the rumors suggest that either the leaked specs for these devices are totally bogus and way off base, or the company is trying to downplay consumer expectations in the hopes of focusing on the current-generation Galaxy S II, of which the new devices would eclipse in specs and performance.

If the former scenario is true, Samsung’s comment would be to make sure that consumer expectations for future products are more in line with the company’s actual roadmap, while if the latter situation is true, the company is merely trying to keep focus at the present with the flagship Galaxy S II, and the Infuse 4G.

According to the Korean smartphone-maker, which had communicated with Androinica, “Some media have been reporting that Samsung is preparing to launch nine new smartphones and two new tablet devices. While Samsung is continuously working on new devices for our customers, the details being cited are not accurate in this case. We appreciate the interest in our upcoming mobile devices and will share more information once its available.”

So what were these devices and what are some of the specs? There were a number of smartphones and tablets that were leaked, and most of these devices boast higher resolution 1280 X 720p HD displays, which means you can see every pixel of a 720p HD video, for example, without downscaling, but also many of these devices have larger screens than what’s currently on the market. Currently, many high-end smartphones carry a 4- or 4.3-inch display with WVGA or qHD resolutions, with the Super AMOLED Plus display on the Infuse 4G pushing the smartphone limits at 4.5-inch with a WVGA resolution.

Let’s dive into what was leaked and you can decide for yourself if these leaks are true for an Ice Cream Sandwich-bound device from Sasmung in the near future.

4.65-Inch 720p HD Super AMOLED Plus Smartphone!

The first Samsung leaked hardware model is the Samsung  GT-I9250, which is said to havea  4.65-inch 1280 X 720 resolution display. It looks like the display will be Super AMOLED Plus, which is the same screen technology used on the Droid Charge, Galaxy S II, and Infuse 4G. Unlike these mentioned devices, which max out at WVGA 480 X 800 resolution, the high resolution Super AMOLED Plus display will be gorgeous, providing lots of pixel density, vibrant colors, and great sunlight viewability. In the past Hitachi is promising that it could deliver a 4.5-inch pixel-packed 720p HD display that can also offer a glasses-free 3D experience.

Interestingly, despite the fact that the GT-I9250 will boast a truly magnificent high resolution display, the device will have a 5-megapixel camera, which seems meager by today’s smartphone standards with both the Infuse 4G and the Droid Charge all sporting an 8-megapixel shooter with 720p HD video capture. The 5-megapixel camera would be a step backwards to the original Galaxy S era.

Another device, the GT-I9220, will slot in nicely as a smartphone-tablet hybrid, and may woo some of the 5-inch Dell Streak owners to make the jump. This 5.29-inch smartphone will have the same 720p display as the I9250, but will sport a dual-core 1.4 GHz CPU with Gingerbread out of the box. It’s likely, but unclear, that this device will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich.

4.5-Inch Dual-Core Gingerbread Handset with 720p HD Display

Those opting for a smaller display can look forward to the GT-I9210, though small still breaks the barrier by today’s standards with a 4.5-inch display, matching the Infuse 4G’s screen size. Unfortunately, though, the smaller display will mean that the I9210 will also match the paltry WVGA screen resolution of the Infuse 4G, and the device won’t be utilizing the new 720p Super AMOLED Plus display panels. 4G, 8-megapixel camera, large 1750 mAh battery, front-facing camera, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi are all on board on this device.

Other Devices in the Leak

Into the budget phone area, we’re seeing the GT-I8150, which utilizes a 3.8-inch WVGA display. The 4G HSPA+ smartphone will have a 5-megapixel rear camera, 720p HD video recording, front-facing camera, and 4G of storage with an FM tuner.

The last model is the B5510-W41, which is described with a 2.8-inch display and full QWERTY keyboard. This may be a variant or successor to the Samsung Replenish, which offers a BlackBerry-style form factor.

Also, there’s a 7-inch tablet on the list, but this device seems like a moderate evolution of the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab. The new tablet, the P6200, will utilize the same 1024 X 600 display. It will have a 3-megapixel rear camera and front-facing 2-megapixel camera.

The devices were leaked as part of a tip to SlashGear.
