Motorola Working to Ensure Droid Bionic Meets Expectations

Droid BionicThe Motorola Droid Bionic has had a long road to launch. Literally. It was first announced all the way back in January at CES and since then has undergone a design change that Motorola has touted as improved and better than the original. We’ve seen the new Droid Bionic in all of its glory several times lately and whether or not that’s true is up to you to decide.

But just in case you needed some encouragement, Motorola has gone ahead and updated its Droid Bionic letter and is not only touting the enhancements that have been made to it but also mentions that it still expects the phone to arrive in September. They also believe it will be one of the best 4G LTE phones on the market for whatever that is worth.

Here is the letter in its entirety:

Motorola Mobility delivered the original DROID in 2009, an award winning device and one of the most successful smartphones launched. The company followed with the DROID X, DROID 2 Global, and DROID PRO. We believe the DROID BIONIC will have those same award winning features and will be one of the best 4G LTE devices on the market.

Motorola Mobility strives to deliver the best possible user experience with all of its devices. We are working to ensure that the DROID BIONIC meets the expectations of consumers who are awaiting its availability.

In collaboration with Verizon Wireless, we are expecting to launch DROID BIONIC this September. We are very excited about the new enhancements that have been incorporated into our first 4G LTE smartphone since we first announced it at CES, and look forward to revealing more details as we get closer to launch.

My favorite part? The part where Motorola says it is working to meet the expectations of consumers. Hopefully, that means that they have listened to potential buyers and will one, release a phone with fantastic battery life (we have heard that that is the case) and two, unlock the bootloader. I think there is only a slim chance of the latter happening but I have a feeling Moto has done a great job in the battery department.

From what you’ve seen or heard, is this phone going to meet your expectations?

You can’t ask people if a product meets their expectations based on what they have or haven’t read. You can do all the research you want but only physically holding the device and using it day to day will you discover whether it meets your expectations or not.

    • Lucas says

Or you can just delete all of Moto Blur and release awesome hardware running Android 2.3.4.  Then let people install launchers, facebook/twitter integration from the market as they see fit.

Maybe you could even have a Blur market for the (7) people that like Blur features.

Oh, and you could stop helping ATT/Verizon cap data plans and throttle by installing bloat databases and apps on the phone.

  2. Aaron Christopher Cohen says

Forgive the nitpicking, but if there were “literally” a long road to launch for the Bionic there would actually be a real road somewhere that the phone had to travel on before its release.

  3. Tim says

I’m passing, the screen will suck as always (yay tft…) and htc has a 720p screen coming out on their vigor for verizon, google nexus prime might have samsung’s super amoled plis HD 720p screen, not to mention the kick ass screen the iphone 5 will most certainly have.

    • Garrett says

So you would rather have a smaller, less-powerful, 3G iPhone over the Bionic because it’s screen will have a resolution that is imperceptibly higher?

      • ShockHouse says

Sorry but you have seen this device screen suck? Man you must be a head honcho at Motorola… oh wait… I forgot you just like 4 hour batteries, my bad.

        • Tim says

have fun with your qHD screen, when the companies releasing 720p screens are releasing their phones in october and november.

        • Dnjobe says

Why does everyone dog on cell phone screens? Sure some are better than others but none of them “suck”. And what good is 720p on a 4″ screen? This whole screen thing is ridiculous IMO.

    • myk says

don’t forget if you have an iPhone you’re a nitwit giving into nothing less than good advertising.

  4. Chase Ca says

yes, unlock the bootloader so i can get rid of this garbage without nixing warranty, and seriously, my droid 2 global has the battery life of a small potato.  In fact, i hooked it up to a potato, and got a stronger signal and longer life.  LOL.  seriously.

  5. Porty says

Wait, doesn’t the “With Google” stamp on the back mean that it runs the stock Android interface? I seem to recall that that was the case with my original Droid. If the Bionic weren’t running Motorola’s UI overlay, I’d be far more excited about it.

  6. Brokenwithchrist39 says

Sorry, you couldn’t give me an I phone. And anything that HTC produces is garbage as well. I’ve always liked the X and so does anyone who has owned one.I’m looking forward to the Bionic myself

  7. Trollslandhere says

For me, its between the Bionic and the Samsung Galaxy S II. If both are full of fail on launch day then I’ll just wait for whatever Kel-El chipped 4g Verizon phone.
I’m on the original Droid, lol

  8. BrianB13 says

Expectations can only be satisfied once the phone is out.  I’ll take the best phone that comes out by the end of October.  I’m not waiting any longer than that as I have waited for the Bionic since CES but if something better comes along now, I will jump on it as the Bionic specs are getting to be yesterday’s news.

    • Tony Perez says

Agreed! October is looking good for me too. I have my $50 loyalty bonus that kicked in last week and I’m ready for the price and spec competition to truly begin in the dual core/4G wars. Good luck to everyone. I can wait. My Droid1 is running well enough for now.

By the way, is it too much to hope that the Samsung entry into VZW 4G/LTE will not only run well but also FEEL like a professional piece of equipment instead of a toy?

  9. Jose Rosales1084 says

I’m excited again. Can’t wait to have this bad boy in my hands. See what I can get it to do once rooted. That’s what I’m excited about.

  10. Fatesounds says

I’m a little shocked that no one has really noticed that all these delays and updates has basically turned the phone into a different looking atrix.  The Atrix has been on the market for 6 months with virtually the same specs as the all new Bionic.  It kills me because I have been waiting for this phone since it was announced, but now that the specs are subpar and 6 months(10 years in tech world) I will probably be looking more closely at the S2 which at least has a 1.2Ghz processor or even wait a few weeks for the Vigor at 1.5Ghz.  I mean really… 6 months of waiting for a phone that’s already out? Come on Motorola.

    • Julio Cesar Ruiz Velasco says

I have been thinking exactly the same thing… unless that is they wanted to *fix* some of the bugs they themselves found on the atrix.. I almost switched to AT&T because the atrix IS the bionic (minus the 4G LTE speed). The only thing that stopped me was that I have been with verizon for over 8 years and have the unlimited data plan.

  11. Mc Squito says

All this waiting can only mean that Motorola goofed up somewhere.,. design, or piloting, or in listening to customers in what they want.  Moto felt they had a fatal flaw that would doom phone sales so they settled for some  “Victory with Honor” attempt – it never works out honorably.  “…ensure that the Bionic meets expectations…”   sheeesh – just another phrase for bulls…   We get it.  How come Moto doesn’t

  12. Fatesounds says

Ha so who wants to start the petition for motorola to not release the verizon atrix at all or at least until it’s hardware is updated to a present day configuration and not 6 months ago.

For me the deal-breaker is the pentile display. EVERYONE who has seen it on the other Motorola phones says the EXACT same thing; you can actually see the pixels. I have the original Droid & I still think it’s display is beautiful. Why would moto go backwards on screen quality?! I just don’t get it.

      • Anonymous says

Pentile is absolutely horrible.  I really hope Google’s first order of business is to kill pentile from their phones.

  14. Bishop says

Oooo wow. Just because the iphone 5 has a better screen display doesn’t mean it is better. Face it apple, you’re history. Android all day everyday!

Expectations!! are you serious, the bionic was announced in January said to be released in April. It is now almost September and still no bionic. Anybody who has expectations for the bionic is that guy in geico commercial who lives under a rock! The world has moved on to bigger better things.

Motorola has put out about  5 or more phones this year, how many has Apple put out in the last year and a half, Motorola makes Awesome hardware, i know i have a Droid X, Which I’ve dropped on the concrete at least 50 times and it still runs like a charm. Motorola is making this phone Cherry and there making sure that it has an awesome battery that will hold up on 4G, The other 4 G phones are Shit! and Apple wont even attempt 4G, you watch when there next phone comes out, Google picked Motorola to buy because they make the best hardware period, and ice cream sandwich will be the most awesome open operating system out there. All i have to say is watch out Apple, you have some major competition coming your way, MARK MY WORD

  19. Felix_leadfingers says

Like I’ve said before… if the Bionic doesn’t come out with something next-gen, like 720p, or Tegra3, or 1.5Ghz (and maybe a LapDock) then it’s just an Atrix.  9 months too late.

  20. Anonymous says

I agree with all the posters who mentioned the pentile display. It looks horrible on smaller screens than the Bionic. I would never buy this phone with that screen for any reason. Motorola should have used the extra time to get a real qHD screen like HTC uses.

  21. Rex_D says

I have no doubts that the Bionic will be a nice phone, but to meet my expectations, it would have to be BETTER than everything out there already, and I fail to see how it will be.  I get that it will be Verizon’s first Dual Core 4g LTE phone, but…. it won’t be the first LTE phone, it won’t be the first phone with dual cores, it won’t be the first 4.3″ screen, it won’t be the first phone with Gingerbread, it won’t have a kickstand, it won’t be the first phone with a laptop dock, it won’t be the first phone with a 8MP camera and a FFC, and it won’t be ahead of the game.  My expectations are to be ahead of the game, to have something undoubtedly better, and to have something NEW.  If the Bionic were 4.3″ to 4.5″ with Ice Cream Sandwich, at least 18 hours of battery life, 16 gigs of on-board memory, 1 gig of RAM, and a PRE-INSTALLED 32 gig card, streamed BT audio, came with NO more than 3-4 bloatware applications, had a gorgeous display, and an unlocked bootloader THEN and only THEN would it meet MY expectations. Oh… and it has to run flawlessly!!

  22. Seriously says

I am totally disappointed with Motorola and how long it took to produce a phone similiar to ones already out. However, I dont understand all these complaint about next-gen tech.. I mean you guys keep complaining how it took 9month to make this phone and its already out dated, but where are the phones that out date it? Apple isnt making it, HTC doesnt make quality even if there phone does have a 1.2 processor, and Motorola next super phone will probably be delayed for monthes like this one!
    @fd1e5bb423d53301dfb40b271adc95d8:disqus
The only phone I see possibly being better is Samsungs.. But who really knows. I just dont know how you can be complaining when theres nothing really in the shoot to replace it for what another 6monthes?

    • Anonymous says

I’m not complaining about the bionic just extremely irritated waiting for the bionic with no real communications from Motorola or Verizon so I’m stuck trolling these marketing “so called” journalist pages looking for answers like everybody else. I can’t believe there is an actual information industry all based on speculation trying to lure your click and they actually get paid for this dribble.

      • KevinV says

I have to agree.  Moto/VZW did the exact same thing with the XOOM, only this is worse.  No technical details were officially available on either company site until the DAY OF LAUNCH. At least with the XOOM, Moto had up a flashy marketing page ahead of time.  But with the Bionic there’s nothing except “leaks” and speculation.  At least Samsung has a static specs page out there on the Galaxy S II, not that it can be trusted once the US carriers start demanding things.

I had to pre-order my XOOM and put down a deposit without knowing the actual specs.  Now I have to decide what kind of arrangements are worth making to try to get a new device.  I’m nursing my OG Droid along and need to upgrade soon.

Lost interest when I found out that the phone was not getting invidia processor. Too much time has passed. I agree they made mistakes on it, delayed release. Iphone 5 is looking good right now. Dont know why people are putting it down. My friend has iphone 4 and I have a droid x2. He pulled up a youtube video. I pulled up the same video. His streamed it start to finish..no stops. Mine took twice as long to load and stopped at least 5 times. don’t know if it is service att vs verizon. Or iphone vs droid. I’m getting iphone a try. Most of u dissing my guess never owned one. Just want to be hacker geeks who like the ease of hacking an undtsable os.

I am seriously to the point where I’ll probably hold out for the Dinara, if you
look at the leaked photos of the bionic recently it appears a bit to bulky. If
the Dinara rumors are legit then it would be in our best interest to skip the
bionic and scoop a lighter, thinner, faster Dinara. I mean we’ve waited for almost 9 months already what’s a few more? Not to mention with the aquisition of Motorola by Google…     Thoughts?

    • seriously says

You really think its coming out before years end?? Motorola has failed to deliver for 9monthes now, what makes you think this new amazing phone will come out in 3monthes time.. especially when they will be pushing the bionic hard..

I just don’t see this amazing tech ppl are talking about coming out before.. let’s say another 6monthes..

      • pop pops says

Well maybe whatever problems delayed the bionic is laying out a blueprint to release more modernized phones at a faster rate. Getting a phone to work efficiently on 4g is probably tougher than installing the latest and greatest hardware.

HELP!……What is a pentile display and what current phones have one? I’ve been researching phones and specs for quite some time yet I have never heard of that term until just recently via these forums.

I’ve read phone specs for years, have heard of TFT, qHD, Super Amoled (all of them), iPhone’s screen (can’t remember name off the top of my head), but have not once read pentile screen under any phone’s screen specs nor have I ever heard of it. All of the screens I’ve seen on the Moto’s have all looked great to me so I want to know what phones have a pentile display.

Also, I know Samsung TV screens are great but I’ve looked at the super amoleds, most recently the Charge, and I think it sucks. It is all kinda dark and has a bogus bluish hue to it. I asked the Rep if it can be adjusted and couldn’t find a way. Why the hype?

    • Tony Perez says

“…I know Samsung TV screens are great but I’ve looked at the super amoleds, most recently the Charge, and I think it sucks. It is all kinda dark and has a bogus bluish hue to it.”

I thought it was only me!!  My cousin got herself and her college-aged son Samsung Android handsets from TMob and they both looked very bluish to me too! I asked them if they had screen protectors that had a custom hue to them and they didn’t know what I was talking about. My MotoDroid1 has a slightly off-white appearance compared to pure white and rich color HTC screens I’ve seen. I hope the Bionic can blow them away.

  26. whitecomet says

This phone will be very stable I love my droid x and will nod my head at htc ui being superior vs blur. However specs are not everything I feel this phone will be very well rounded in terms of efficeny and quality.

Yes there are faster phones coming oput such as the vigor but you will not know till they are benchmarked to see how it compares. It’s like if you had a guy in a hyundai sonota with a turbo and 274 hp vs a evo x with 291 you would think hmm close race right.  To put it frankley the evo would pull bus lenth’s on the sonota not so much due to the power but other factors like gearing the power band etc.

I think tis phone will stand toe to toe with anything that comes out. This is all couch qb we will not know till they come out and if the bionic is not enough that dinara or droid hd for a better screen slimer profile and maybe more hp will soon follow.

The other thing I like about the motp product line is taking with accesories to get more use out of it as long as these toys work on future models it will help. The atrix got the ball rolling with it being more than just a phone and this phone will push that envelope furhter.
