Skype just made it easier to get online at over a million hotspots worldwide with the new Skype WiFi app for iOS.

Skype WiFi, which used to be called Skype Access, let’s you connect to hotspots in airports and coffee shops with your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad without buying huge blocks of time and pulling out your credit card.

Instead, the Skype WiFi app lets you pay with your Skype account and pay only for the time you use. Per minute charges start at 6 cents with no limits on the amount of data you can upload or download.

The Skype WiFi app doesn’t just get you online to use Skype, you can use your iPhone or iPad as if you were connected to a standard WiFi network. Because you pay per minute, you don’t need to feel bad about connecting to download email or a quick app and leaving 50 minutes of unused WiFi behind.

Skype WiFi Lets You Pay for Access Easily

Skype is kicking off the launch of this app with free WiFi access at any Skype WiFi access location from Saturday the start of August 20th to midnight Sunday the 21st BST. All you need is the free iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad app.

To use Skype WiFi on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad follow these directions.

  • Go to the App Store and download the Skype WiFi app
  • Open the Skype WiFi app for iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad
  • Sign in with your Skype account details or visit Skype.com to create a new account
  • Tap Go Online and you’re online!
  • Once you’ve finished, just tap Disconnect

In order to use the app you will need Skype credit. You can add this by logging in to your Skype account at Skype.com.

You can also use Skype WiFi on your Mac or Windows notebook to get connected at participating hotspots.
