Verizon May Offer Early Upgrades for Droid Bionic and iPhone 5 Buyers

Published

on

Normally you need to wait two years to get a new phone at discount pricing, but it appears that Verizon is giving out early upgrades to long-term customers in order to tempt them to upgrade to the Motorola Droid Bionic and iPhone 5.

Droid Life’s Kellex reports that he received an email telling him that he has been “rewarded” with an early upgrade for one of his lines, which wasn’t up for renewal until April 26 2012!

This is a big deal for customers who have been eagerly waiting for the iPhone 5 or Motorola Droid Bionic, and quite a surprise.

The earliest you can normally upgrade on a two-year contract is at the 20 month mark, which makes this very early upgrade a big deal.

I checked my email in hopes of finding an early upgrade email, but I found none. Not surprising given that I signed a new contract back in March.

If you don’t see an email, you can always call up Verizon Customer Support and ask nicely if you could get your upgrade date moved up. You don’t need to get worked up or threaten to leave, just tell them you are interested in upgrading to the Motorola Droid Bionic on launch day, and ask if they can note your account for an early upgrade.

You might have trouble scoring a 9 month early upgrade, but you never know. Verizon has moved up upgrade dates for big launches before.

Any of you received an early upgrade email from Verizon?

I called verizon yesterday and they informed me that I was eligible for an early upgrade. I’m looking at the Bionic, but I’m waiting until October to see if the iPhone is coming.

up until just recently, I was getting the bionic on launch day, as i did the incredible on it’s launch day. there are just too many phones up and coming that seem so much better that the bionic. the droid/nexus prime has got my attention for sure, i’d also like to see the htc vigor. as long as ive been upgrade-able and waiting for the bionic to finally launch, ive decided that whats another month, if it means a phone better than the bionic…………..

I agree with Dave.  Too late for me though.  Waited to long and don’t trust the Bionic and have a bad taste in my mouth over this whole deal with Motorola.  Going with the Samgung.

i love my samsung don’t get me wrong, but if you are an official ota update kinda guy, then kiss any android os updates goodbye. samsung doesn’t give a shit about their customers you’re better off getting the bionic in terms of updates.

I bought my Droid X in August of 2010, and I was not supposed to be eligible for my discounted upgrade until May 2012.  I received an email that said that I am eligible now, but that if I wait until May 2012, I will get an additional loyalty discount.

sort of the same here .. i was with PrimeCo, which merged with Bell Atlantic, Vodafone, and some other that I can’t remember, to form VZW. :D

edit: Oh… and I used to sit caddy-corner to Lowell McAdam during the PrimeCo days … in Westlake, TX – Solona. Good guy!

I just got off the phone with a VZW representative. I became a VZW customer last October when I purchased a Droid X on a 2-year agreement, so I figured to try my luck. She told me that I am not up for early upgrade until November of this year. She said they do have a current promotion till the end of this month for people with regular (non smart) phones to have their upgrade moved up immediately should they want to upgrade to a smart phone before their original upgrade date. Not sure if those of you that got those early upgrade emails have smart phones or not, but that’s what I was told.

Verizon should discount the bionic since we had to wait so long. $299 is way too much for this phone when Ics is right around the corner.

It shouldn’t be more than 199, it’s almost out of date already.

I have been waiting since May with a broken Droid 1 (toutchscreen gone wacky). I still haven’t seen the specs to be sure this is the phone for me.

Maybe someone can help me out. I’m debating between waiting for the Iphone 5 or getting the Motorola Droid Bionic. I’m coming from an old Windows Mobile phone so I’ve never had an Android or an Iphone. As far as apps go, I’m not sure what apps I would need with an Iphone. Will the Iphone 5 have adobe flash player? My main concern would be, “Could I put all my mp3 music files on the Iphone 5?” I have friends who have the Thunderbolt and they can watch just about anything on their phone. Seems like the Droid is a better choice for me to go to. I guess the only ? I have is can the Iphone 5 really live up to what the Bionic is doing? I may just wait for the Iphone 5 to come out to compare.

I assume it may be a trick!! I am an OLD subscriber so old that I am an Alltel roll over!! I have a DIRT CHEAP unlimited plan. Verizon offered my upgrade on my TWO data hogs on my plan. My Droid 2 and my netbook!! However…. I was told that by upgrading those two they would be 4g and I would NO LONGER get my 60$ unlimited plan Alltel price and be subject to Verizons EXPENSIVE plans!!!

I just called Verizon about an early upgrade as I have until June before I can upgrade again.  They claim that Apple will not allow them to early upgrade anyone to the new Iphone

Well, I posted two months ago (
    BSkiiz ) ,
Well, sure enough, 1 year into my 2 year contract with VZW my account is now eligible for an early upgrade. I logged on to submit my payment and low and behold, It said that I was eligible for a discounted upgrade. I clicked on it and it took me to the list of available phones. Christmas came early because I was able to upgrade to an iPhone 4s 32GB for $299. Good look to those of you seeking an upgrade!
