Samsung Galaxy Note Is Powerful and Way Too Expensive

Published

on

I’ve been coveting the Samsung Galaxy Note ever since Xavier got his first look at IFA last week. A big 5.3-inch screen is a good compromise between smartphone and tablet for me, and I’m not about to complain about a 1280 x 800 resolution or a really gorgeous AMOLED display. Add the note-taking capabilities and stylus and I’m ready to open my wallet.

Well, I was. Now I’m backing up slowly. Samsung announced some European pricing for the Galaxy Note: Denmark, 5,600 Danish krone ($1,066 / €750); Norway, 5,700 Norwegian krone ($1,052 / €742); Sweden, 6,000 Swedish krona ($929 / €655); Finland, €799 ($1,133). Ouch.

If the devices do come to the U.S. (we’re still waiting on the Galaxy Player, so…) it’ll likely be less than the conversion rate dollars you see up there since that’s how these things go. But still, is the average Swede or Finnish citizen really going to plunk down that much cash for what’s essentially a small tablet? Especially when “full size” tablets like the iPad 2 cost less?

Samsung Galaxy Note, Too Expensive?

Yes, the Galaxy Note has some spiffy features, and it turns out to be really powerful. The folks at Techblog.gr ran the Quadrant benchmark at IFA and got a score a tiny bit higher than the Galaxy S II.

I’m all for having a PDA/MID-type device running Android and giving me all the benefits of a tablet with the portability of a phone. I’m not ready to pay $1,000+ for the pleasure. If the Galaxy Note makes the jump over here, what price would you be willing to pay?

Maybe if it ran stock android it would be more appealing .. but that price is still outrageous !!!

I would love it as a phone, but I FOR SURE would not pay more than $300 on contract. No AT&T.

Don’t you even know that usually, things carry the same price in USD as in EUR ?
Apple Finland: iPad = 479 EUR
    Apple US: iPad: 499 USD
Everybody in the business knows that.

I would buy it at $1000. iPad 2 and Infuse go to eBay and there you go.

though there are speculations, gut feel is that it will be around £250 with contract in UK and without contract will be £599..

It  would make sense (no pun) for the Note to be 20-30% more than the S2, which is 500 euro in my country, so 600-650 euros seem logical, if expensive. And as much in dollars, as per the *real* exchange rate.

Actually, the iPhone4 16 GB (same as Note) is 630 euros, I’d expect the Note to be more expensive.

These seem like standard prices, most likely free on 24 month contract like the SGSII.

I would be willing to pay $400.00 for the galaxy note if the price for an iphone4 32gb cost $300. Why wouldnt I pay a $100.00 more for a much more better device.

The price will probably stay so ridicolous high until into 2012, I doubt it will drop significantly before the x-mas rush. Them ist will probably stay about 20% above the level of the Galaxy sII – and I will pay that price then. Main reason for my willingness besides the “shiny!” is the longer battery life.

I have an IPhone 3GS and would be willing to pay $350 on contract with AT&T that way I can keep my unlimited data. :D
This phone looks amazing and would love for it to be my first Android OS device. Let’s hope U.S. availability is soon and on my carrier

I’m for this really nice phone. I’m sure it’ll be better than the iPhone 5. And I like to support such a company finally making what I’ve been wanting for so long which is: a 5 – 6 inch mix of laptop or tablet and phone of at least current qualities of both fields.

But, it’s a little scary if such a phone should cost $1,000, then at what prices will phones be in about 5 years. I like Samsung for giving us what we’ve wanted: a compact computer, tablet, or laptop that’s also a phone, but as $550 or even $450 was barely affordable for me to pay for something that I’m trying hard to make a style of wearing around the neck for protection (lol, phone insurance – such silly insurance people. You won’t get me. Never.). I just can’t afford a $600 plus price tag.

People in Europe, Finland, Sweden, etc. must have a really high minimum wage if the average wager can afford a $1,000 phone.

The most expensive phones are always around 300 with a contract and higher without.  It won’t be more expensive than that.
