iMessage and iChat May Integrate For Awesome Unified Messaging

Published

on

Future updates to iMessage, iChat and Lion may integrate the two built in chat features, bringing a chat solution that spans across your iPhone and your Mac so that messages show up in each location.

iOS 5 will bring a new messaging solution to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, that allows you to chat with other iOS users without using expensive text messaging. You can also use iMessage to group chat with other iOS users.

New code snippets found suggest that iChat in Lion will tie in with iMessage, so that your messages will show up on your Mac and on your phone, giving contacts an easy way to get in touch.

Here’s a look at what this might look like from MacStories.

The integrated solution isn’t surprising given that Apple rolled out Facetime for the iPhone and eventually brought it to the Mac, allowing users to video chat with the iPhone, iPad and Mac computers. If you have Facetime open on your Mac, and get a call both your Mac and your iOS device will ring.

Right now this is just a snippet of code and an idea of what it might mean. Don’t expect an OS X Lion update to pop up on your Mac and have iMessage messages sent to your Mac.

At the earliest we might hear more about it when iOS 5 is released, or when the iPhone 5 gets a solid release date.

It would better if they were integrated with other services like Facebook, etc… Like Mango on Windows Phone… they way it wouldn’t be locked into only people with iStuff.
