The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 was announced at CTIA back in April with an 8.9″ display, thin design and Android 3.1 operating system. The larger Galaxy Tab 10.1 has given the iPad 2 some of its first competition, and caught our attention with built in 4G LTE on Verizon.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 comes in 16GB and 32GB models, which cost $469 and $569 respectively. You can pre-order the Galaxy Tab 8.9 from Best Buy starting today, with expected release on September 25th or 26th. In store pickup is reportedly coming soon.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has the following specs:

  • 8.9″ display with 1280 x 800 resolution
  • 1GHZ Dual Core Processor
  • 16GB or 32GB Memory
  • 1GB RAM
  • 3MP rear camera & 2.0MP front camera
  • WiFi a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • USB 2.0 port
  • 15.8oz and .3″ thick

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 listed at Best Buy are WiFi only, but we have seen reports of models coming to AT&T, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a 4G LTE model arrive on Verizon with a faster 1.5GHz dual core processor at some time.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9’s biggest strength is the different size. At 8.9″ it could prove attractive to users that don’t want a large 10″ tablet like the iPad, but it will be a tough sell when you can get the iPad for just $30 more.

7″ tablets have had trouble getting mainstream adoption, so it will be interesting to see how general consumers respond to this size.
