Are Display Issues to Blame for iPhone 5 Release Date Delays?

Published

on

Normally we have to wait for an iPhone announcement or iPhone release before we hear of display issues, but according to Digitimes, one manufacturer of iPhone 5 displays has found a defect that could contribute to shortages in 2012.

According to Digitimes’ source, Winter has found a  “delayed bubble” defect with displays headed for the iPhone 5. This defect reportedly proves problematic because it isn’t detected until the assembly line.

The source believes that a quick fix is in order, and Wintek responded, saying that, all of its products are being delivered on schedule.”

This isn’t the first time we have heard about production issues with the iPhone 5. Even though the product isn’t official yet, there have been rumors of issues in delivering on the teardrop shape of the iPhone 5. While the source claims that Apple will ship 25-26 million iPhone 5 devices in the fourth quarter, we’ve heard that this might prove difficult.

Apple is notoriously stringent in quality control, leading to devices that are, “very difficult to make,” according to Terry Gou, head of Foxconn’s parent company in an interview with Bloomberg. Foxconn manufactures Apple devices like the iPhone and iPad.

Before you cancel your day off for waiting in the iPhone 5 line, keep in mind that this news is still as unconfirmed as the iPhone 5 itself. While all rumors need to be treated with skepticism, like iPhone 4S case packages mysteriously arriving without a case at retail locations, Digitimes’ past performance earns this report a raised eyebrow.
