Will You Line Up on iPhone 5 Release Day? [Poll]

Published

on

The iPhone 5 has an incredible amount of pent up demand, demand that may see some supply soon. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 5 on October 4th along with iCloud and iOS 5. At this event, Apple will finally tell us when the iPhone 5 release date is. Right now we think that October 13th is a likely candidate, but it could drop even sooner.

With the iPhone 5/iPhone 4S saga coming to an end, we have to ask. Will you be lining up for the new iPhone on release day?

Typically Apple releases see long lines on launch day, and low availability for a few weeks right after. We were on hand for the iPad 2 launch, and saw lines wrapping around the block at the Apple Store in Columbus Ohio. In order to get our spot, about 25 back, we arrived at 11 AM and jumped in line. The diehards up front had been waiting since around 9 AM.

While you can order online, many people want the instant gratification of getting the new iPhone on release day.

This has led to people selling their spot in line. One lady made $900 by selling her place in line for the iPad 2. If there are iPhone 5 shortages, due to production troubles, expect to see some insane lines and high eBay prices in mid October.

The iPhone 5 launch may actually come with shorter lines at Apple stores because of increased availability. This time around, the iPhone 5 is expected to be available on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint on the first day. In addition to purchasing an iPhone 5 at the Apple store, you should be able to purchase an iPhone 5 at your Verizon, Sprint and AT&T retailers — though they will have a more limited stock.

If you want to be sure that you are at the front of the line, you should put in for a day off as soon as we have a firm release date, buy a chair, dust off your winter clothing and set an early alarm. The good news for those willing to wait all day is that Apple employees have been known to hand out water, coffee and blankets to those in line on cold days. Thankfully, the people near you in line will also need to use the restroom, so make friends and take turns holding places in line.

Of course, you could always just go get in line right now and search for sponsorships. Rob Shoesmith has been camping out for the iPhone 5 since August. He is in London, and has turned the long wait into a way to get some ridiculously cool free stuff from sponsors. Check out our interview with the first man in line for the iPhone 5.

We expect an iOS 5 release date of around October 10th, which means you can use iOS 5 while you wait in line.

Reading about the iPhone 5’s new features is a great way to pass time while waiting for it to hit the shelves: https://bit.ly/qDVFYR

Flawed poll: You don’t give the option of ‘I will wait and see what initial reviews say’ or ‘I am not planning on buying.’

The iSheep will be lining up at the local Apple stores to buy and outdated, slow 3G phone and sign a new two year contract. It will also have a small screen and you won’t be able to change your own battery if it goes bad, and they do go bad, but the iSheep won’t care. Meanwhile those with Android phone will be happily zipping by them on their LTE phones.Queue up iSheep, queue up.

Normally I’d buy first day and only wait 2 – 3 hours max. More than 3 hours than I’ll have them order it for me. Pay, then have it delivered or pay $20 extra for overnight/next day delivery. I can wait a day to 2 months.
