Did Sprint Sell Out to Get the iPhone 5?

Published

on

If the rumors hold true, Sprint will get the iPhone 5 on October 4th. This is the first time Sprint will have the iPhone 5 on their network, and marks the third U.S. carrier for the device — leaving T-Mobile clamoring for the iPhone.

When we asked shoppers which carrier they want to purchase the iPhone 5 on, Sprint was a close second to Verizon with 26% of the vote.

Why is Sprint such an attractive place for consumers to purchase the iPhone 5?

Sprint is known for unlimited, unthrottled data, consumer friendly prices, annual upgrades for big spenders and many other consumer friendly policies.

These have helped Sprint maintain relevance as a 3rd place carrier, fighting big players like Verizon and AT&T who have larger networks and bigger high-end phone selection.

Unfortunately, it looks like Sprint is willing to trade the magic that has helped it stand out from the rest of the Wireless industry in order to get the iPhone 5.

Here are a collection of changes made by Sprint in the lead up to the iPhone 5 release date.

While Sprint hasn’t shot down their unlimited data plans, it is possible that this could come in the months after the iPhone lands.

Luckily Sprint still offers some of the most attractive smartphone plans in terms of price, but will that be enough to add the 1.2 Milllion subscribers that analysts originally thought the iPhone 5 would bring to Sprint?

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple will take the stage at Apple headquarters on October 4th for an iPhone event, where the company will “talk iPhone.” We expect to get the official iPhone 5 announcement, including carriers and the release date.

We expect a new iPhone 5 with a thinner design, dual core processor and 8MP camera to be announced. Read the latest iPhone 5 release date, hardware and carrier rumors for more information.

Apple may also announce a cheaper iPhone 4, called the iPhone 4S. This device would run iOS 5 and most likely have 8GB of memory with looks much like the current iPhone 4.

Apple is also expected to share the iOS 5 release date. iOS 5 brings over 200 changes to the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. These include new notifications, a better camera app and more. Find out more: What is iOS 5?

Always good to see the pompous use their highly coveted computer skills to demean others.  You couldn’t comment on his opinion on the article so you belittle him?  Oh, maybe you’re so intelligent that you couldn’t understand what he was trying to say.  But an intellectual would’ve asked him what he was trying to say wouldn’t they?

Reminds me of the joke of the freshmen going to Harvard and asking an upperclassman “where is the cafeteria at?” and the upperclassman replying “Here at Harvard we don’t end a sentence with a preposition”, and the freshmen retorts “where is the cafeteria at, a#*hole?”.  At you too Guest, who is even cowardly enough to be anonymous.

Why would i do anything but belittle him when hes starting off the comments by being a jackass? He doesn’t care about whether sprint gets the iphone, so automatically his response is to support screwing the people who do? Go back to your cave shrek….we will let you know when your opinion is wanted :)

Forgot this. As backround, I’ve been a Sprint customer for 11 years. I appreciated being “Premier Gold”. I like being though of as “loyal” for which I got in return was THEIR loyalty. Oh, well, May as well change the name to Verizon2. ANYONE that believes “Unlimited” will be around for very long may as wait for Santa to bring them something special from Sprint.                                                                                         ——–

We are making a move from ATT to sprint after 8 longs years ATT. ATT does not know how to take care of their customers. Well its their loss not mine.

If they keep the unlimited plan, I will immediately buy an iPhone from sprint, but if they decide to get rid of it, that is the end of my love for sprint.

Technically it’s at&t and Verizon and who ever else will get the IPhone 5, he is making it sound like everyone else has had it but sprint. Probably should said it’s the first time an apple iPhone could possibly be released with sprint

Personally i think that the android phones are better then the iphone anyway more freedom to do things on the phone as with the iphone you have to use apple products and buy things from them to use and install on phone . So forget an iphone

Sprint didn’t sell out, they understand what’s going to happen to their network once people buy an iPhone. iPhone users actually use all the capabilities of their phones, creating a huge load on every network they’ve been offered on. Sprint is just getting ready for the inevitable. They understand extremely heavy users can bring down their network so they’re trying to be proactive and keep it from happening. As for all those current heavy users, how many of you actually exceed 2GB/month? If you do, do you do anything other than watch movies or play data intensive games? Why don’t you do this over WiFi, which is never counted against any data limit?

Sprint sells hella many Android phones and those phones are sucking down a ton of data constantly. There won’t be much change (maybe less overall data usage if reports are correct) if those people swap for Apple.

How does anyone see it to Apple’s advantage to have plans with limits??? Really??? Apple has always tried to negotiate unlimited. Unfortunately the carrier would tend to “can” that option shortly thereafter. BTW, here in Canada, most of the Android users I know only use Wifi (a few young techies being the exception). They bought their Android phone based uniquely on price (generally 0$). They could never tell me what they found technically superior about the phone except that it was easier to get Apps for free.  I would ask “because Android has more free apps?”… nope. ’cause they knew of sites where they could avoid paying 99$ or 1.99$… that is being cheap… really cheap!
