HTC ThunderBolt Gingerbread Update Pulled by Verizon?

Published

on

It has only been a couple of days since the long awaited HTC ThunderBolt Gingerbread update starting rolling out to owners of Verizon’s original 4G LTE flagship but it would appear that within those few days, ThunderBolt owners and Verizon have discovered some horrific bugs within the software that apparently have caused Big Red to pull the update.

No, seriously. This is not a joke. According to Droid-Life, Verizon has pulled the T-Bolt’s Gingerbread update because it is infected with a slew of bugs including broken voicemail notifications, a busted Google Talk, and more.

In fact, I’ve had several readers write in with those exact problems and I just figured that it was an isolated incident and not a widespread problem affecting all ThunderBolt owners. Looks like I was horribly wrong.

HTC ThunderBolt

Verizon is apparently hard at work on a fix for those that have already updated but it’s unknown when the fix will be rolling out. Let’s hope it doesn’t take the three or so months it took for the carrier to roll out the random reboot fix.

How has Gingerbread been treating you ThunderBolt owners? Any other issues I should be aware of? The ThunderBolt at this point, I think, takes the crown for the most bugged device of all time.

For the most part, it has been positive.  My TB runs smoothly and I definitely have a longer lasting battery. That said, I noticed right away Google Talk didn’t work properly.  Moreover, my Voice Mail notification will not self-delete from my notifications bar.  Some sites said we would get a new Gingerbread keyboard.  That didn’t happen with me.  I have the same stock keyboard, but that’s no hassle (since I like it).

Im really close to just rooting my Thunderbolt. I really had high hopes for it when i first got it back when they first came out but as time went on it is proving to only be a joke of a mobile device. Not only does it seem like HTC and Verizon don’t really even care about it anymore by pushing back the Gingerbread update for months but they half-ass the software for it and just push it out like they decided to finally make it compatable the night before…By the way, wasn’t there supposed to be Skype video calling compatibility coming out with Gingerbread along with HTC Sense 3.0? “That’s why its taking so long for the Thunderbolt update.” Again, nothing but a half ass update. Thanks HTC.

Updated to 2.3.4 yesterday.  First thing I noticed was the screen unlock was slow and didn’t work the first time.  If I tried a couple of more times, it locked up for 10 seconds or so.  Also noticed the keyboard could not keep up with my slow thumb-typing.  Can’t speak to the battery usage as I already use 2x battery saver.  I was really dissapointed with the update. Two stars out of five

I just feel with hopes of getting GB months ago and it being delayed and then months later we finally get it and get so many bugs? Get it? Kinda wonder if the GB was really the OS to go with.

I haven’t had any problems with my new update… It’s not as different as some of the other phone’s Gingerbread OS’s, and I don’t really have any longer battery, but I also haven’t had any issues with it either…

The clock app is also missing from the app drawer.  HTC is aware of this bug.

The clock app is the clock….just hit the clock and it will bring up all the options.

I’ve had a couple of issues.. First, the voicemail notification will not go away and then secondly I couldn’t receive or make calls last night. I just kept getting a weird error notification sound until I rebooted my phone. I haven’t noticed any increase in battery life either. The only good part is that I was able to download the Volume+ application and finally change the settings on my speaker so I could hear calls on speaker and hear media a bit louder…

I updated the morning it came out. No problems with the update. All the expected features present and functional. I switched from the DroidX to get this phone, and it has been one problem after another. I’m sure no one at Verizon will agree to brand the HTC Vigor as Thunderdolt2. I think those of us who have lugged this dog around should get a discount on the Vigor… Anyone know if the SIM card can be moved from the Thunderbolt to the Vigor? I’ll pay cash to ditch this beast

Nearly impossible to lock on a 4g signal even in a 4g area, no vm reminders, ringtone volume is maybe 1/2 of what it use to be. Download manager won’t let you clear without deleting items downloaded, data conectivity not as stable as they said. Rear camera won’t work in Gtalk. This phone has become the Thunderturd. It’s not the phone youve dreamed about its the one you should AVOID!!!!! Let us trade it in and five us a credit towards somethin.g that actually works!!!!

      09/30/2011 at 2:28 pm

If you’re having that kind of trouble with the phone, perhaps you should take it in for an exchange.  I haven’t had near the trouble that others have had. BTW, the Gtalk bug isn’t with the rear camera; it is with the front camera.  Gtalk works with the rear camera (I tested it last night).  The problem is your conversation partner can’t see you, and if you turn the phone around, you can’t see h/er.

Well, I am back to the problem of data connections when moving from 4G to 3G to 4G, among other problems.  I switched it back to 3G only.  Time for the Bionic?????

Thunderbolt customers are Verizon’s best customers, early adapters to 4G. Verizon should recall the Thunderbolt and give customers a new phone of their choice. Come on Verizon, do the right thing.

Apple and Microsoft know how to develop and maintain software. They treat smartphones and tablets the same as computers. I want my software updates directly from the software developer and I want to install the identical software on whatever device I have. When Android goes from Google to HTC to Verizon and they each modify it to make it proprietary then nobody is in control and responsible for the final product. To HTC and Verizon a smartphone is a disposable commodity and they are not equipped to maintain it. If you want new software just through your old phone away and get a new one with the newer software.

The problems I notice was the slide down settings on and off data connectivity doesn’t work…some of my apps don’t work, some work at times but other days it won’t. My battery hasn’t improved, but I have notice a difference in performance

What I’d be happy with is a bloat free froyo with a couple enhancements. Improved security and id be great

Yeah, i’m having the issues with some of my apps not working, or when i tyr to stop them under “running services”, the phone does not detect them. My personal ringtones keep switching with all of my contact, and no VM detection.

As I just responded in the big thread for the bionic I read this cause I just returned the thunderbolt for the bionic… wtf is wrong with these people at android/vzw its like windows releasing software and having 3000 service packs to try and fix their lack of engineering. My wife is a hardware & software engineer at Honeywell for the space & defense division of N.A.S.A. now granted they have higher standards to hold up to but its like going to a pharmacy and getting over counter medicine for a major illness that needs top level treatment specialists and medicine. There has got to be a better way to make an operating system.. work and do what it says.. they are capable… why are we sinking millions of dollars into replacing equipment that locks up, freezes or crashes after they so called fix a bug?

No vm notifications, Verizon swore they never heard of such a problem. Spent hour on the phone then they shipped out a new phone. New phone has froyo on it but works again. Verizon is in denial about this phone.

I started out with the thunderbolt but complained my way off that horrible device. Now in the Bionic and so far has far surpased the tb. At least with the Bionic you don’t have to bring a charger wherever you go!

GGot the thunderbolt in march when it first came out & really aggravates me that it was gonna get gingerbread soon this is Oct & we still haven’t received it :[ . Was also supposed to get unlimited mobile hotspot as advertised on ad when it was also coming out & didn’t . Next time ill wait . Might not even get any cause now on top of charging for hotspot on top of unlimited data if you for phone back then . Now they’re gonna throttle your usage . Seriously thinking of going back to an old fashion cell phone ( basic )

That is absolutely ridiculous. I paid $300 for a smart phone that has never worked correctly, has security flaws and has a horrible battery life. I’m avoiding HTC like the plague next time. This is simply uncalled for.

Same story here…..no voicemail notifications…I have to manually go and check to see if I have any voicemails…very annoying…and…my email noifications…not working! It is very frustrating to say the least. I really hope they can fix it faster than it took them to fix the rebooting problem.

Whatever the bugs the phone is 5 times better with this update. My battery has been much, much better. I can use my front facing camera in Skype calls and lots of other little things that add up to make a huge difference. It’s like going from Vista pre SP1 to Windows 7.

Also when i text someone and leave the conversation up it wont let me reply unless i back out and reopen the message! I now hate my phone!!!! Hhmm may switch to apple.

    I got tired of VZ and their updates and rooted my phone. I have been running gingerbread with sense 3.0 for months and with almost virtually no problems. The devs out there making roms for the rooted phones are relentless in fixing problems. I am not sorry I did this and have never looked back.;

The volume on the dail pad is low on the first number you dail. Also when you back out the camera it makes a popping noise and Mr data connection is messed up too.

Sounds like a real mixed bag of problems among TB users! I got the GB update last month, then another one last week. Only problems I have are the screwed up ringtone assignments and the sound is all broken up on Skype calls (which is the biggest reason I got this thing).
