Why the HTC Vigor Can’t Compete with the Galaxy Nexus

Published

on

A couple of days ago, I gave you my thoughts on whether or not the Samsung Nexus Prime could compete with the iPhone 4S. Today, the specs of that device, now known as the Galaxy Nexus, leaked out and revealed a device that should be a viable iPhone 4S competitor if Google and Samsung put some marketing force behind it.

It has 4G LTE. It has fantastic hardware. It has a vanilla version of Android. And hopefully, it has a price tag that is easy for consumers to swallow.

At the very least, it’s going to likely be the best Android phone to date.

But as you might know, the Galaxy Nexus isn’t the only big Android name on the horizon. You may have heard of a phone called the HTC Vigor. It too is a 4G LTE phone and one that was supposed to challenge the Galaxy Nexus for Android supremacy.

HTC Vigor

I realize that many of you have been looking forward to the Vigor and I’m sorry I have to do what I am about to do. Let’s just get this out there right off the bat.

The HTC Vigor is dead in the water.

Here’s why.

1. We can all agree that the Vigor has fantastic hardware. A 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch HD display, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front facing camera, 1GB of RAM and 4G LTE rounds it out.

Problem is, the Galaxy Nexus is able to match it in just about every single area. Hardware wise.

And don’t talk to me about the 8MP camera, mega-pixels don’t mean anything. HTC is doing some pretty special things with their cameras but I think the Galaxy Nexus’ will be on par or better than the Vigor’s.

Software wise, the Galaxy Prime will blow the Vigor out of the water.

Nexus Prime

The Vigor is rumored to be coming with Gingerbread and not the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich that is on board the Nexus Prime. Throw in the fact that this is a Google-backed device, the Galaxy Nexus will likely be on the forefront of updates.

The Vigor probably won’t be. In fact, it’s anyone’s guess as to when it will get Android 4.0 if it doesn’t have it at launch. Remember how long it took for the HTC ThunderBolt to get Gingerbread?

Speaking of the ThunderBolt.

HTC ThunderBolt2. If the Galaxy Nexus didn’t seal the HTC Vigor’s fate, it was HTC (and Verizon) that did when it released one of the most bugged phones of all time in the HTC ThunderBolt.

The HTC ThunderBolt’s reputation has turned people away from HTC phones especially from ones that run 4G LTE. The bugs that ThunderBolt owners endured were unacceptable and the speed at which HTC and Verizon fixed these issues was debatably worse.

Random reboots for months on end?

Gingerbread nearly seven months after launch? On a flagship phone?

No thanks.

I’m not saying that the HTC Vigor will have those same issues but what I am saying is that HTC’s reputation took a hit and I think that it’s going to finally show up when it announces the Vigor.

3. The HTC Vigor is probably going to be a Verizon exclusive. The Galaxy Nexus is also probably going to be a Verizon exclusive. I don’t see them co-existing.

One will trump the other and in my opinion, it’s the HTC Vigor that will find itself, even with its fantastic specifications, in the bargain bin come October.

Or whenever it arrives.

“…should be a viable iPhone 4S competitor…” This isn’t even a fair fight… It’s like Ivan Drago vs. Spider Rico.  The Prime blows the 4S out of the water in each and every spec… and the rumors don’t even need to be true to fulfill this meager feat. I WANT THIS!!!

The Vigor blows the Iphone out of the water also. Same as Bionic, and SG2.

Are you blind?! Compare vigor’s specs to nexus prime’s & it’s plain to see that the ONLY advantage the nexus has is it’s going to have ‘ice cream sandwich’ out-of-the-box. Vigor trumps the nexus in EVERY other aspect!

Kid? Ask your mommy to read a spec sheet before posting a comment. The Vigor has great specs. Only missing ICS. I never said it was better than the prime though, just Iphone.

The best point in the article was how piss poor the Thunderbolt was, I watched a friend deal with one, and it’s not the first time HTC has screwed things up on the software side.  The poor support of the Galaxy S phones is the same reason I won’t even think about a Galaxy S II.  I may be intrigued by the Nexus since it’s vanilla Android but it’s still money in their pockets.

sorry my mistake on market share, apple went from 31% to 28%, android went to 56%, android not going anywhere dude as they have now doubled apple in market share!

@d5b9d710c79f439a37335df28bdec38a:disqus It’s not that the iPhone isn’t growing, it’s just that Android is growing faster.  Android was available on every single wireless carrier in the US (and a bunch of international retailers), while the iPhone was only available on two carriers at the time that study was done.  Think of all of the carriers and phones android is available on.  Android is also on lower end phones too, while iOS was only on semi-high end and a high end phone.  Now, with the 3GS free, and the higher end 4S, iPhone’s share of the market will certainly go up.  Android will never go away, but it’s share will likely go down in the coming months.

no way, you know specs dont mean everything, its funny the iphones 800 mhz dual core a5 doubled the galaxy s 2’s score in the benchmarks, even tho the galaxy s2 has a dual core 1200 mhz proccesor and twice the ram as seen in the iphone wow amazing right, idiot

Exactly my point also. I was soooo pissed at the small screen on the 4S that I was definately going Galaxy. But then I ready Anand. I’ve been reading him for years. His benchmarks as as good as it gets.
Then I see this 800Mhz Qualcomm STOMP the 1.5Ghz Qualcomm, with half the RAM!!!!!

It must be android right? It’s so flippin cool, it uses too many cycles?

Thats all I can figure. Someone please set me straight.

Adam… you’re still sporting the 3GS, yet you’re using the fact that the Nexus will get updates quicker?  Dude.. you’re on the opposite end of technology.

I also find it amazing how someone’s opinion based on two un-released phones is suddenly considered news. You know no more than the thousands of so-called technology bloggers who claimed to have inside information about the new iphone 5, it’s specs, it’s shape, it’s screen size, etc. Well dude… guess what. There IS no iphone 5.

If you’ve got anything real to add the the plethora of nonsense, then do it… otherwise, please post your blog as an opinion rather than news.

P.S. have you heard anything about the new HTC HP Palm Web OS Pre 6?  I hear it’s gonna blow the doors off the competition.  LMAO

That is the weakest attempt at an argument against the Vigor that can be made.  The fact is the only thing that the Prime has going for it is the updates.  That is it, period.  The HW on the Vigor is superior to the Prime in almost every way.

According to the article the author states that essentially 1.5GHz=1.2GHz, 8 MP is not as good as 5 MP, and the Vigor is bad because the Thunderbolt was bad.  The Vigor also is bad b/c it is also going to be a Verizon exclusive along with the Prime (which has inferior HW).

There is zero logic in any of those statements

    • VigorLover

      10/07/2011 at 9:54 am

Here’s some more proof that the entire argument about the Prime succeeding and the Vigor failing is false,
as apparently the exact opposite is now happening…

yeah, another HUGE point this missed:  HTC Vigor/Rezound is a world phone; Nexus ain’t.  Considering that many Nexus enthusiasts are travelers or people ordering from remote locations, that makes a big difference.  Does for me!

Also, this just came out, but the Nexus has a PenTile screen, so it’s actually going to have far more banding, which I really dislike.

This whole article basically comes off as someone who wants a reason to jump onto ICS asap, even though they know the specs are already dated.

Oh, and competing with the iPhone 4s?  That’s such a ridiculous comment.  While the iPhone 4GS runs at half the cycles of the Vigor/Rezound, the GPU is the best on the market.  The Galaxy Nexus uses a GPU more comparable to the iPhone 3GS. Did the Nexus S blow the last iPhone away?  It didn’t even sell enough to beat the outdated versions at the time.  It really shouldn’t aspire to either; it’s Apple’s single model vs. a dynamic system, which is why people who want the top-end stuff have options like the Rezound.

We will see the official specs for both phones they are announced. But both phones are going to be way better than the shitty IPhone. From what ive read on alot of specs sheets for both phones, they are both the same hardware wise, the only difference is the OS, Ice Cream for Nexus, and Gingerbread for Vigor. Vigor will come with Beats audio and Beats Earbuds. so that is a advantage for the Vigor. but i wil take a phone that is stable and not glitchy over some cheap headphones. All we are left to do is wait for both phones to be announced, if you have your heart set to get the vigor but are not wanting to get it because of it not launching with Ice Cream remeber there are always ways to root your phone and install Ice Cream yourself, hopefully these phones have a decent battery, but remember you can always buy the extended battery for all phones. there is always a way to get around things, just research and be smart about it.

  6. Vigor > Prime

    10/06/2011 at 3:23 pm

Even if the Prime does have better spec HW and SW-wise, the Vigor is more than likely going to kill it because of it’s Beats audio speakers.

This article is pure conjecture. There are no definite specs just leaks. The leaked specs for the Prime have changed twice just today.

We can just wait until Tuesday to hear and see what the phone will be like.

I had the nexus S for about 3 months but i decided to sell it I was not happy with the perfomance I went back to my HTC incredible S . In my opinion the incredible is by far superior. Anyway I think the only way to compare cp is to try it for a period of time. It’s difficult to judge on papers.

I eagerly anticipate the prime myself.

But here is some truth about the vast majority of people who will be buying phones. They are not into reading about them, they definitely don’t eagerly await them, unless you are talking about the iPhone.

What I think Samsung has done over the past year is create a product that captures the attention of this kind of consumer. The one where a device is a bit of a fashion statement. Samsung has made its way into being able to be viable as an alternative to an iPhone on an aesthetic level.

That android has enough apps and an OS to make them feel cozy in the end is good as well.

I still think iPhones are going to sell like crazy and any one Android phone still has a hill to climb to being able to topple Apple for a phone KO. I do think the Nexus has the right look to do this though, and as long as Samsung continues with Google producing the slick curved design, it may make a real run at being the one phone to outsell the iPhone. Just not likely this year.

However, given that Google is going after Motorola, there is some doubt to Samsung and the Nexus series staying with Samsung, not to mention Google has worked with others to produce a phone before.

I think the real reason HTC will not stack up with the Nexus will be all about looks.

    • Dave Haynie

      11/16/2011 at 11:20 am

iPhones are going to sell like crazy.. not as crazy as all of Android, but crazy. And yet, it’s not all about one model anymore. Right now, weeks after the iPhone 4S launch, the top selling iPhone is.. the iPhone 4. Not the 4S. And even the 3GS is selling better than the iPhone 4. Why? At least in the USA (where Apple really has its base), it’s the iPhone 4 at $99 and the iPhone 3GS (AT&T only) at “free” pushing these volumes.

So this is long-term smart; Apple’s selling units to people who never would have bought iPhones. And they’re more likely to upgrade to iPhones in two years. But there are also people buying the iPhone 4 who might have gone for the 4S.

Last year, the Apple fanboi mantra was that no Android vendor would sell more than Apple. Then Samsung did just that, even if Apple still had the most popular phone model. It’s going to be harder for Apple to maintain that single-model lead, long as they’re now spreading their sales across multiple units, just as every Android company does. Ok, sure, Apple isn’t yet introducing a new model every three months. Not yet…

Software doesn’t matter. Those who care will just root and flash to Cyanogenmod as soon as possible. There goes the Nexus’ one advantage.

    • Zak

      01/16/2013 at 11:46 am

      a really shallow answer.

Most people don’t want to root, mod, jail break, or otherwise. That is most consumers.

I root, you root, but that’s a minority approach.

I have seen gingerbread in use and compared it to my froyo os and I didn’t see that much of a difference to be such hype. Maybe there will be a significant difference between gingerbread and ice cream sandwich. Personally the ui on HTC makes the experience on an android worth it. The almost stock or stock android ui I have seen on previous nexus phones and some others is boring. Also the nexus phone I saw on sprint felt cheap like if I squeezed it too much it would crack. My motor Droid 1 is heavy but feels solid. Most HTC phones feel solid.

HTC makes great phones.  One thing that scares me about Samsung is that almost every app I check out in the Android Marketplace, there are comments that says “didn’t work on my Galaxy S” or Galaxy S is listed in the bug report.  Perhaps this won’t be the case with future Samsung phones, but something to consider.

Crown a device king before it launches?  Outstanding “journalism”.  (heavy sarcasm there).    How about someone does a review of a device when it is released and then we start talking about what works adn doesnt work.   Oh yeah and what Nexus device to date has sold well?  None.  Motorola, HTC, etc always blow away Nexus devices.  Why?  Because only bloggers and techies like standard Google.  Sales reps, consumers all love what the vendors add to Android and how they make it better.

I’ve had no problems with gingerbread. ICS would be cool to try, but if the Prime’s UI is going to be like previous Samsung phones, count me out. It’s as boring as iOS. HTC’s Sense UI is far superior to all other UIs IMO.

I gotta admit, the design of the Prime has me drooling, but that’s not enough to overcome a poor UI.

I never owned a HTC phone until now & was excited to get the TBOLT & finally be able to use the HTC UI i’ve heard so much about which I really loved using but this cluster f**ck of a phone totally turned me away from owning another HTC phone. They should have offered TBolt owners the option to upgrade there phones for the inconvenience they have had. This phone should have never been released when it did, I am definately going with the Nexus Prime.

WOW! This is really kind of sad. I’d heard that gottabemobile was a respected site but to jump to a conclusion without even holding either device in your hand once? WOW! Is this the kind of reporting that passes for news/information here? Everything you said was complete conjecture and opinion not fact. Opinions are fine as long as they are stated as such. As others have said your entire argument boils down to the Thunderbolt had issues and Nexus will have ICS at launch where as the Vigor will have to wait for the update. That’s it! You’ve come to a conclusion without any actual testing of the product. You use the Thunderbolt as an example of why the Vigor will be bad because in your opinion it was horrible. That is completely flawed logic but think about this, if the reviews for the Thunderbolt were done the way you just did yours(based on specs alone and opinion with no hands on) then the TB should have been one of the best smartphones ever put out. For it’s time it was a monster of a phone SPEC WISE I mean.  By the way, you didn’t even bother to mention the Vigor having the Beats by Dr. Dre technology integrated in it. For some it wont matter but, for others(audiophiles) it might make a big differences. This whole review makes me one sad panda…sigh.

  26. Sense UI FTW

    10/08/2011 at 8:47 am

Personally, all hw being equal, Sense UI wins it for me.  I’ve bought nearly every android phone for verizon and the IPhone 4 when it launched and HTC is head and shoulders above everyone.  I dunno what the thunderbolt’s problem was with Froyo and still is with the radio losing mobile data, but it’s frustrating to no end.  Big expectations for the vigor.

In the end, hardware is only one of my major concerns. I’m sporting a HTC HD2 for nearly two years now, flashed with Android. It’s fairly stable, aside from having to use the older Market. In all that time I’ve worn it with my keys, my Zippo lighter, all in one pocket. No protection, no covers, just the phone.

2 years and not a single scratch on the screen. I’ll take a device with a screen like that again any day.

    10/15/2011 at 3:36 am

Well I still think that anyone who will experience HTC sense will ever buy a samsung phone. First of all the competition is currently based on the software side, The experience we are getting from HTC sense is beyond any other phones potentials (even iphone). HTC desire was a joy compared to nexus one, incredible s desire Hd experince… is way better from any samsung/google phones experience, ergonomically better, a joy to use, and beautiful interface, the identity is there… widgets and solutions are way better, for a normal user this is the necessity, no one will care about 200ms increase in speed for opening or scrolling an application. HTC clients have a main advantage to show off… with VIGOR they have the complete figure for a super phone and a balance between software hardware and beauty. In all studies, HTC customer retention rate is the second after apple and almost double samsung… so i think all the article above makes no sense… and HTC sense is the best feature on a phone in 2010 after all.

Sorry but htc’s Vigor will own the nexus in both ways… Cause the hardware is faster and htc had sense which is by far the best shell 4 any os, in this case android. So I am totally not agreed with your point of view. And the nexus is always not as hi end as the hiest end phones besides it still has to be proved that the nexus is better and faster. ALso the Vigor is design wise more beautiful. That are the reasons the Vigor will actually win this versus…

No mention of software functionalities or the enhancements they brings to the user experience, huh? From your perspective it’s probably best to not even bring it up, huh? Specs are nothing without innovative software to back it up. What will ICS do for users that every other Android device launching next year won’t? What will the HTC Sense experience bring to Android that no other Android device will? Within 3 months, after the ICS source code is released, the Galaxy Nexus will be just as sub par as its specs are today. Nobody wants a Smartphone that loses its luster after 3 months, while the Vigor will continue delivering a user experience that no other Smartphone will.

Well there are some good points in this comments but look I had a nexus S for 3 months prior to that I was using the incredible S but sorry to say I was not satisfy with the nexus performance and went back to the incredible S. It’s difficult to writte comments like yours without testing the performances of these units. I have never encounter problems with my HTC units they work perfect that is what I call quality !

haha.what a stupid ‘comparision’…so what you are saying is that the Vigor is ‘blown out of the water’ because it does not have ICS and due to the Thunderbolt’s bugs. Tell me Mr Author, how can the Thunderbolt’s bugs affect the vigor?. And also, maybe you have not heard about some people called ‘developers’ who do a fantastic job in cooking ROMs?.ICS will be put for the Vigor in no time once it is released. And are you like a director if Verizon who is not happy that you wont be an exclusive distributor of the Vigor?.Seriously, there has not been a single Phone to Phone comparison in your review. Im not a fanboy and to be honest, although i like HTC’s products, i always welcome better products. The new Razr for example seems like some stiff competition as well.So pls, Sir, if you do not have an unbiased review, just forget abt publishing it. Comparing the phones like what you have done is perfectly alright, but claiming that those disparities will ‘blow the Vigor’ is just stupid.

With the Modding community ready for a new set of devices to snatch up and mod to perfection, there is no worry about HTC Vigor not having ICS. once both phones are out we can get ICS from the Prime and then our phone will still have the best Hardware AND Software. HTC for life.

PS and if the prime has the home button as the second button in like the Samsung Galaxy S II then thats a dealbreaker for a lot of people i know. I HATE the samsung thermal keys they bug me so much.

    again, HTC for LIFE!

Nexus has a pentile matrix screen so it will be more pixelated than the Vigor.  It also won’t have a removable SD card.

Cracks me up to see how people attempt to base stories and news articles off of rumors. At the time, no one knew ANYTHING for sure about these 2 phones.. and surprise surprise.. rezound turned out to be the better phone. Everyone got caught up in ICS. That’s the only reason everyone THOUGHT the gnex would be better. Not so much.

Resound is the clear winner (especially now that HTC unlocked the bootloader).

I think that I read the specs correctly. The Nexus does not have any slots forbade external card. That is huge for me. And most likely a deal breaker. But by the pictures, the Nexus looks absolutely amazing. But, looks don’t always cut it for me when it comes to tech. I don’t do cloud storage. Well other than Gmail. I ant space and as much of it as possible. If I can un solder the memory chips and put in biger ones, I would. And will, when I can find them. Also, never had a problem with the Thunder Bolt. Love this thing. Actually, if I didn’t have the last $50 towards a device that have to use in the next couple months. I would wait another one or two years.

I will never own another samsung. Went through too many of them. Just switched from my laggy freezy droid razr 2 days ago to the htc rezound. Its my first htc and i.gotta say i.love it. It has blown everything away. The only downside is the battery. But im.just gonna buy a extended battery as always. Im a power user. I put phones through hell. This htc does well for me. My moms tb has gingerbread and its stock. She dont have problems with it or the evo she has. Get ur facts straight samsung fanboy.
