iTunes Update Expected By Tuesday, Ahead of iOS 5 Release Date

Apple is almost ready to push the latest version of iTunes out the door, complete with iCloud support. The update to iTunes 10.5 comes ahead of October 12th, the iOS 5 release date.

Update: iTunes 10.5 is Available to Download

iTunes 10.5 brings support for the new iCloud service and iOS 5, which means that we would expect to see it by October 12th, but Japanese language Apple blog Macotakara blog suggests that we will see it early. Macotakara claims that iTunes 10.5 will be available for download today or Tuesday for all users.

The iTunes update will support both iOS and the new iCloud solution which gives users of Apple products backup and syncing of things like pictures and video taken with their iPhone, documents and other content. You will also have access to your music through iTunes Match, which lets you access your music from the cloud without having to upload it. iTunes and iCloud will match the music on your hard drive with an available version in the Apple iTunes store and credit your account with a copy of that song or album. You can then access it on an iPhone, iPod Touch or any computer with the new iTunes.

Currently you must back up your content and sync it yourself, but after the release of iCloud, iOS 5 and iTunes you will be able to re-download purchased music just like you could do with your iOS apps. Apple describes the new version as follows:

With iTunes in the Cloud, the music, apps, and books you purchase automatically appear on all your devices. Or you can download only the stuff you want to just the devices you want.1 It’s all part of iCloud and iTunes 10.5.

“iTunes in the cloud” will make all of your content accessible on all of your Apple products bringing a level of convenience we haven’t seen yet. You can get the update when it ships at Apple or via the Apple Menu on your Mac.

If you are upgrading to iOS 5 and or getting the iPhone 4S, you should install this update as soon as possible so that you are ready for the upgrade. You will need this installed to upgrade to iOS 5 on October 12th. If you are getting a new iPhone 4S, you should install iOS 5 on your old iPhone and use the iCloud backup service to make transferring all of your content over to your new iPhone as easy as possible.

You have to get the Gold Master, or GM, as well as iTunes 10.5 beta 7 or later. Then you just restore to that firmware in iTunes. It worked for me.
