HTC ThunderBolt Gingerbread Update Said to Be Returning Soon

Published

on

It has been awhile since we last heard from HTC and Verizon regarding the HTC ThunderBolt Gingerbread update that was pulled but it looks like we might finally have some good news.

According to a tweet from HTC’s main account, both companies anticipate the update to make its grand return soon. How soon? HTC failed to give us any sort of timetable. Shocking, I know.

It was back at the end of September, September 27th exactly, that Gingerbread finally rolled out to Verizon’s first 4G LTE smartphone. The excitement about the update soon turned to dread (of course) when ThunderBolt owners started experiencing a slew of bugs including broken voicemail notifications, a busted Google Talk, and more. The software was and still is a mess for ThunderBolt owners out there.

And then, just a few short days later, Verizon pulled the update leaving those who got the update furious and those who didn’t get the update, well, furious. I’d argue that those of you who didn’t get the update should consider yourself lucky.

HTC ThunderBolt

Hopefully, HTC and Verizon were able to work out the kinks in this next release otherwise I have a feeling that there might be a mass mutiny over to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus’ ship.

If that hasn’t occurred already.

I will probably die of old age before the Thunderbolt gets Gingerbread.  This is ridiculous and the Thunderbolt is by far the buggies tech product of all time.  It makes Windows ME look like OSX.

lol very true. I literally went through 9 BB storms until they finally gave me a sorry LG Ally (great battery life though…)  I upgraded to TB when it came out…

i agree with you but this smartphone was my first ever android smartphone and it left me such a bad taste in my mouth from the bad battery life to sending my text messages to the wrong people to being buggy as hell when you want to do something to charging the dam thing i mean really it takes at least all night to fully charge the phone and my iphone 4 only took 2 hours at max when using it as well , Waiting for the iphone 5 with LTE to come out , never again android never again

“All generalities are false”  -George Carlin.  In other words, you can’t condemn all Android phones for the failures of one.  Remember the iPhone antenna issues?

I absolutely HATE when my text messages get sent to the wrong people. I thought I was the only one.

Fuck this. I want a new phone. The Thunderbolt is a lemon. HTC and Verizon know it. This is bullshit…and everyone knows it.

I’m with him. This phone is eternally flawed. They need to recall or refund. Period.

It seems like Verizon and HTC  want to pretend that the Thunderbolt never existed.  How else can you explain the lack of customer support and explanations for the countless delays, problems and empty promises?
If the Thunderbolt was a car, it would probably be illegal to make all these false claims and not offer fixes for its issues.

I got the most amazing brush off from Verizon when I called and called and called.  What irritated me the most was that they acted like there was no rash generic problem.  I am considering replacing mine with the Samsung Galaxy S2.

I love my thunderbolt.  Admittedly, the voicemail notifications should have been checked prior to the software release, but otherwise it is great.

I am now on my 3rd TB thanks to continually dropping the 4G network, and most recently due to receiving the GB update. Funny how now Verizon does not allow for problem phones to be returned for another device except “on a case by case basis”. I absolutely LOVE my TB when it works and keeps its connection. But my patience is really being tested as its issues continue to mount.

I am on my 5th thunderbolt.  I have 3 extended batteries and the original battery.  I can not stand the fluctuating data 1x 3G then 4G again over and over.  The first 4 thunderbolts had other issues like not being able to dial 911 (phone would get stuck in emergency mode….

how many times have you needed to dial 911?

I got the “leaked” update a month or so ago and I hated it…problems with the camera, as well as some apps missing from the market (which was back at the old version!), even though my wife who has the Droid X was able to see on her version of Gingerbread.  I thought the camera was an inherent design flaw and sent it back to Verizon as a defective device, before realizing it was actually the software that had the issue.

I kept the Froyo on the new phone and I’m definitely glad I did not get the newest update after seeing this.

I’m on my third Thunderbolt, and yeah, this is ridiculous.  Verizon always acts like they’ve never heard of the problems I experience, and if it weren’t for having bad credit and needing to be on a family plan, I’d skidaddle my way to AT&T.  The worst part is I paid FULL RETAIL for this phone, because I’m a tech addict and had to have the first 4G LTE phone. I’ve learned my lesson.  Waiting for the Droid Razr to come out, then selling this paper weight.

It is sad,  I am on my 3rd tbolt and this is my 6th generation HTC and I have loved every one of them mainly for the camera and getting detailed closeup pics for my work.  This one is getting to be a problem.

I’m with the rest of u when I say I wish I had never bothered getting this phone. And the lies about getting the gingerbread update. When my next upgrade comes in January 2013 its bye bye android hello Apple iphone. So tired of it freezing and having to reboot several times a day and I got a bigger battery for so far its lasts all day but the earphones I bought for listening to the radio won’t fit in the jack. Now. There are a lot of issues with this phone and I am fed up and mad about it!!!!!

I had the Samsung Fascinate and had issues with it and Android updates getting released. I waited months for the Froyo update. People just need to stop bitching and come to the conclusion that this is technology. And not everything works perfect the first few releases. The same goes for cars, etc.

What’s wrong with all of you rich, whiney cry-babies who can afford to buy a new phone every time you have to restart.  I have never had a problem with my Thunderbolt.  Sure, you have to restart it once in a while…but you have to do that with ALL smartphones…yes, even the iPhones.  I use it constantly every day…I use all of the features…and I have never had a problem.  If you read these comments, EVERYONE thinks EVERY phone is a lemon.  People can never be satisfied.  Nothing will ever be perfect.  My girlfriend has had and iPhone 3 and an iPhone 4 and she has had more problems wit those than I ever had.  And to all of you threatening to “jump ship” and get a new phone…be thankful you have your daddy to buy you a new phone every 3 months when you get bored and cranky.  And I guarantee as soon as you get a new phone, you’ll find a problem with that one, too.  Forums like this are why I never…and I mean NEVER…listen to comments before I buy anything.  I’d like to issue all of you complainers a challenge…..tell us, please, which phone have you EVER been completely with?  Anybody?

Can I be your friend? Seriously, my wife (not a tech head) and I both have Thunderbolts. She never complains. I took the leaked update knowing the risks and, apart from the voicemail notification issue, my phone’s fine. I use the hell out of 4G for Google Music and switch to 3G when I’m not.

That said, if an official version of CyanogenMod comes out first, I’m rooting and flashing.

I’m with you. I have had my TB for almost 6 months and I haven’t had any of the problems that people are complaining about except the battery life. I’m rarely anywhere for very long that doesn’t have a plug soo I can deal with it. However, It will take alot to have me switch to any Apple device because I refuse to be restricted. I agree with your assessment of the situation. Most of the people that complain the most haven’t been happy with anything. If they really were they wouldn’t have switched.

Me being unsatisfied with a bunk phone doesn’t make me a whiney cry baby, the fact that I can afford to buy a phone every month if I wanted to doesn’t make me rich. The TB has many problems other phones don’t. Your so called challenge is easily overcome, the droid 2 was by far a much better experience than this phone, I wanted the 4g so now I’m stuck with the problems. The fact that I’m disappointed with this phone doesn’t make me an iPhone fanboy either. Once the nexus galaxy is out I’m dumping this. Hell, typing this message was way harder than it should be witu the laggy keyboard input.

Love HTC… have had them for years. The Bolt is no different… its got everything I want and my 4G is awesome. HOWEVER… the texting that goes to the wrong recipient is unacceptable and dangerous. I don’t need texts to suitors going to my father. Come on now. And as for the people that said Verizon pretends they dont know what you are talking about I have NEVER had that issue. I have once in my 11+ years with Verizon experienced terrible customer service. Every other time they have been extremely helpful. They all knew about the tech problems on my T.Bolt and called HTC to find out answers, had me run different trials to try to fix things (granted I could have done most of it on my own because I’m smart with my smartphone) but they have always taken the time to care and never brushed me off. After hearing peoples iPhone complaints and knowing YOU CANT SHARE MUSIC (my main reason for never switching from Android software is pulling and sharing music from any computer) I’ll stick it out with my T.Bolt and if the texting thing isnt fixed soon I will get another Android powered phone.

Android 4.0 will come out before we get 2.3 on our Thunderbolts. Is this a ploy to make more sales off the Galaxy Nexus when it comes out?
