Samsung Galaxy Nexus Event: What You Should Expect

Published

on

Unless you’ve been taking a snooze underneath a giant boulder, you’re probably well aware that tomorrow is a big day in the world of Android. Not only is Motorola expected to announce the new Motorola Droid RAZR, combining its two iconic brand names, but Google and Samsung are tapped to announce the next incarnation of Android as well as a device that many of you have been waiting for since the days of the Droid Bionic madness.

That device is, of course, the Galaxy Nexus, a phone that Google and Samsung will be pitting against Apple’s latest concoction, the recently released iPhone 4S.

Galaxy NexusTomorrow’s event is actually on October 19th in Hong Kong but because of the time difference, Google and Samsung will be making the announcement around 7PM here in the United States.

Make it a family event, or something.

So, what should you expect from tomorrow’s announcement? Let’s look at a few things that we expect to happen.

A Trump Card

4G LTE support with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is still unconfirmed, obviously, but an extensive feature sheet revealed it to be a possibility at the very least. We’re fairly certain that this is going to be a device that is exclusive to Verizon and it would be shocking to see this device launch without 4G LTE support if it’s indeed headed to Big Red’s network.

This of course will give it a huge edge over the iPhone 4S which doesn’t support LTE and instead runs on AT&T’s HSPDA network while the Sprint and Verizon variants are just pure 3G.

So, if you’ve been looking for a 4G LTE device not called the Motorola Droid Bionic, the Galaxy Nexus is going to be the phone that will immediately shoot up to the top of your wish list.

Gorgeous Hardware

The Galaxy Nexus won’t just have 4G LTE speeds either. They will be backed up by a gorgeous looking device that boasts some of the best specifications on the market. We still haven’t seen the Galaxy Nexus in the wild but we did see it pop up in a teaser video.

And from that teaser video, we were treated to a render that gives us a pretty good idea about what to expect from the Galaxy Nexus. If it’s not exact, it’s probably going to be close.

As for its hardware, we should see an extremely thin device packed with a ton of RAM (1GB), a massive battery to combat the LTE, a TI OMAP 4460 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and a gorgeous 4.65-inch 1280 x 720-pixel Super AMOLED HD with curved glass.

Google and Samsung have gone all out in order to compete with the iPhone 4S.

That’s going to be a tall order though as Apple as already sold 4 million iPhone 4S’ in three days. But if any phone has a chance to put a dent in iPhone sales, it’s the Galaxy Nexus.

Release Date? Maybe. A Pre-Order At The Very Least

We’ve seen October 27th pop up as a release date for the Galaxy Nexus but after the Verizon MAP pricing for the device leaked over the weekend, we think it’s pretty safe to say that we’ll see this bad boy arrive in November. Right now, the two days to keep in mind are November 3rd and November 10th.

It’s not a given that Samsung and Google will announce the release date for the Galaxy Nexus but given how popular this device is, we’re fairly certain that they will deliver on some sort of pre-order and two or so weeks out from launch seems like a perfect time to start those.

We’d also think that they would want it to go on sale as soon as possible in an effort to lure consumers away from the iPhone 4S.

The Focus Will Be On Software

While the Galaxy Nexus is certainly one of the most exciting Android devices ever, the focus of tomorrow’s event will be on Android 4.0. And that’s not such a bad thing. From what we’ve seen, Ice Cream Sandwich is looking like a fantastic piece of software and one that should be on par with Apple’s iOS 5.

So, don’t fire up the stream thinking that you’re going to get 30 minutes or an hour of the Galaxy Nexus. The device will probably be just a sliver of what Google has up its sleeve for tomorrow.

‘On par with iOS 5’??? Seriously…I don’t know where people come up with this stuff. Android software is already ‘on par’ and better than iOS.

It was universally reported that iphone merely caught up with andriod with its 4S.

Forget all the fancy bells and whistles andriod phones have over the iphone, just being able to CHANGE YOUR BATTERY makes androids superior to iphones. Lol.

I agree…android phones almost absolutely require removable batteries because without that option you’ll be dead after three hours

Wow, @a7df9bbf75381e18ef7b3337b0f41aa3:disqus , that’s news to me considering my Droid2 has been off the charger for 14.5 hours, and I’m at 30% remaining.  I’m a heavy user too, averaging 3,000 mins/month.  Oh, bluetooth radios were on for 7.5 hours today too.

Knowing what you’re talking about is neat, you should try it sometime.

My iphone doesn’t need a removable battery because, I turn off bluetooth, wifi and 3g, and put my screen brightness down to 10% to make it through the day.

“We’re fairly certain that this is going to be a device that is exclusive to Verizon”

Except that various GSM varients for different networks the world over have already passed through testing, so I’m fairly certain you’re wrong. https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/10/telstra-and-vodafone-to-both-have-the-nexus-prime/

The first Galaxy Nexus out of gate is speculated to be the one heading for Verizon with the others following thereafter.  The Galaxy Nexus will be coming out in different flavors (pardon the pun).  I only care about the Verizon variant as it will be on the fastest 4G network here in the States.  I could give a crap about the other American carriers and could care even less about International carriers.  I’m just sayin…

What you care about doesn’t make the article less wrong.
        What was your point exactly?

Yeah, I’m wondering how this assumption of Verizon exclusivity was made when it clearly states “T-Mobile” on the phone’s lock screen in the video they also posted.

The video shows the present Nexus S running ICS, not the upcoming Galaxy Nexus. Software, not Hardware.

Lol, the first crop of 4G/LTE phones had terrible battery life.  The next crop had better battery life, and the Galaxy Nexus should be pretty decent.  The thing is, Android phones can access 4G networks, iFones can’t.  When your battery finally can’t hold a charge, no problem, get another one and replace it.  Having to mail your phone to an Apple service center and pay big $ for a battery exchange sucks.  So the point about having a replaceable battery is a good one, regardless of your fanboy status.  My original droid goes about two days, not bad.  Many Android phones have excellent battery life, certainly on par with or better iFone 4.  The thing is that there are so many choices with Android…  I understand that many are having battery life issues with the 4S.  go figure…

Unfortunately, I don’t think battery technology has evolved anywhere near as much as the phones they go in.  They have gotten bigger in phones but you can still run a Bionic down in a couple of hours of use.  Getting an extended battery is an ugly option to say the least by a viable one for sure.  ICS has a nice feature in it to report how much data each app is using.  There is a pretty cool app called JuiceDefender that helps save battery life.  I’m not sure if the Nexus will have a 1750 mah or 2000 mah battery in it.  We shall see.

I read on engadget that a google employee confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus will have a 1.5Ghz Exynos, 8MP camera and a 2000+ may battery.

Oh how I wish, but Exynos is highly unlikely.  Not impossible, but highly unlikely.

The ability to see how much battery each app is using is already on android, and has been since Donut. It’s not just on ICS.

    My bet?

1280×720 4.65 inch Super AMOLED HD Display (display comes with GSII HD LTE)

    1.5 GHz dual core Exynos
    16MP Rear camera
1.3MP HD front cam (I believe 1.3MP could be 1.8MP)

How do I get up with those three things?

Well, considering that Samsung showed of those three exact components about a couple weeks ago.
And considering that those spec’s will put it above the GS II HD LTE, that is already coming with a 1.5 Ghz dual core Exynos, 2MP front cam, 8MP rear cam, and 4.65 inch Super AMOLED HD Display.  This phone is going to be /better/ than the GS II HD LTE, not worse.

Storage capacity?  Possibly 128GB.  I remember (clearly) that about half a year go, if not more, Samsung said that they were working on 128GB chips for phones. so, why not stick it in there?

    Verizon? Or Verizon exclusivity?

It will ONLY be on Verizon IF it comes to At&t, T-mobile and sprint first.  There is no way possible they will make it Verizon Only. T-mobile (and At&t) had it from the beginning.  And Sprint got the Nexus S, which last I checked their wallet only works on Sprint. (for now)  It would be like if Apple suddenly said to At&t and Verizon, “sorry, but sprint will be the only one getting the 4S.”  Not going to happen.  If verizon get’s its, it means that all the carrier’s will get it as well.

IMO, android is better at certain things than ios, like multi tasking etc.. ios is just more polished and more user friendly.

I guess if the phone is now going to Japan, that should make the Phone a world phone, for the last time I check Japanese phonese are mostly CDMA with some gsm coverage and moving towards LTE. Which leaves me to believe, it will be a world phone on Verizon.
