Androids Best iPhone 4S in Battery Test

When you set out to find a new smartphone, one of the main things to look at is how well the phone’s battery holds up. Some phones have atrocious battery life (see: HTC ThunderBolt) while others are able to get you through an entire day of use. Still, overall battery life on smartphones isn’t amazing and that’s why battery tests are so important. Cue PC World who posted a battery test yesterday pitting the newly released iPhone 4S against some Android device including the HTC ThunderBolt, Motorola Droid Bionic and the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch.

Now, this test comes at an interesting time for the iPhone 4S. Apple is currently tasked with figuring out a battery life issue that is apparently being caused by iOS 5. However, even with the battery issue, the iPhone 4S was able to put up some impressive results.

Epic 4G Touch

The Epic 4G Touch took top honors in PCWorld's battery life testing.

The test was done by looping a 720p video with the display at full brightness and the speakers turned up enough to be heard in an office setting. This was done twice (for an average) for each phone until the battery died.

Here was what they found.

Coming in first was the Samsung Epic Touch 4G (Sprint’s Galaxy S II) which had an average battery life of 7 hours, 22 minutes. It was followed by the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide which boasted 6 hours 33 minutes of battery life.

The iPhone 4S, even with the battery life complaints, was still able to place third with battery life clocked at 6 hours, 14 minutes. After that, there is a steep drop off with the fourth place finisher, the Motorola Droid Bionic, finishing with 4 hours and 50 minutes of battery life.

Coming in last was Virgin Mobile’s Motorola Triumph which checked in with an abysmal 4 hours and 44 minutes of battery life.

It will be interesting to see how the iPhone 4S fares when Apple releases iOS 5.0.1 which the company says will fix the issues that have been plaguing owners. And we’re also curious to see how the new crop of 4G LTE phones, the HTC Rezound, Motorola Droid RAZR and Samsung Galaxy Nexus fare.

Surprised to see two Androids at the top of the battery life list?

Think the iPhone 4S will overtake them once the update is released?

Hmmm … seems like the headline should read:

‘Even with known battery bug, iPhone 4S bests 75% of top Android phone battery life by more than TWO HOURS!’

That Galaxy SII number is excellent, though – and the couple of friends I have who have one really love them.  And now that the SII is under $100, it is a pretty easy buy.  Too bad it isn’t on VZW or I would buy one.  Fortunately the values of Android phones drop so fast I know I will be able get a Razr or Nexus before Christmas for $150 or less.

My bionic battery life tripled when I switched off 4g so I guess im doing better than most! 8 hours and still at 75% battery life included browsing.. texting and listening to Motorola S9-HD for an hour or so…

How about you run this test using wifi and netflix? or even better…3g/4g if you have unlimited. Why treat them like PMP’s? The efficiency in which they use their radios is going to matter then most

My understanding is that not all 4S’s exhibit the battery-life problem and it seems clear to me that the hand-set you tested with was one of those that are unaffected. So why would your results change when Apple release a fix?
