Verizon Sneaks Bloatware Onto Galaxy Nexus

Published

on

So we just showed you some official videos for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0. In the first video, the device used is very blatantly the variant of the Galaxy Nexus that will be headed to Verizon. And from that video, it’s very easy to see that Big Red, Nexus device and all, has managed to sneak some bloatware applications onto the smartphone.

Now, before you get all riled up, it appears that there are only two: Backup Assistant and My Verizon Mobile.

Still, it’s pretty frustrating to see this happening with the carrier’s first Nexus phone, a phone that we thought would be completely free from carrier chains.

Galaxy Nexus

Alas, it doesn’t look like that is meant to be and who knows, maybe you’ll actually end up using both of these applications.

And who knows, maybe Verizon will have a change of heart before it releases the Galaxy Nexus.

Whenever that is.

The good thing is with it being a nexus device, the bloat should be removable.

Short of rooting, it won’t be that easy. And the pain with Verizon is they force new bloatware onto your phone with each new OTA update.

My last DROID X update before I decided to replace it was like 300mb of bloat. Madden NFL game? Really? :/

Ice Cream sandwich has the ability to remove all apps built in, plus just because the phone has a couple of Verizon apps on it doesn’t mean they are locked on it. They could just be preinstalled, but removable like Google apps that come with phones. The Razr has the ability to remove most bloatware without root and you can hide the rest.

If these are the only two Verizon apps pre-installed this is fantastic. Backup Assistant is one of the best apps for smart phones on Verizon, making sure you never lose your contacts again. For those consumers that lose their phone and the many that only use a gmail account to start using their android phone and never log in again, not knowing their password and can’t retrieve it, lose everything. I realize this is very moronic but you would be surprised how many people do that. And my verizon is just a handy tool to track your data if you have tiered data and minutes/texts. So im pretty happy about this.

First of all, I think you’re being a tad hyperbolic.  The my verizon app is an app that simply lets you tap into your Verizon data (billing, minutes used, and etc.). It is pretty natural to have a carrier’s app for that feature included on a phone.  And backup assistant is also intergrated into the features provided by verizon, namely contact back up.

These both seem like 2 pretty innocuous additions.

Contact backup??? You mean the contacts that are already backed up online in Google Contacts??

Have you ever tried using Backup Assistant?

My Verizon Mobile, however, is useful (slow, but useful)

Yeah, I actually ended up installing My Verizon Mobile on my OG Droid.

The bloatware itself is not the problem. The likelihood that software updates will have to go through Verizon, instead of coming directly from Google, is a BIG problem. The whole point of owning a Nexus device, other than a vanilla Android experience, is to get updates when they first come out and not wait for the carrier to release them.
